Goals of the New DealWhen Franklin D. Roosevelt became

President he asked Congress to help get the country out of the Great Depression.

The New Deal was FDR’s plan to get the country out of the depression.

The New Deal focused on three major goals:ReliefRecoveryReform

Goals of the New DealRelief helped people right away. Examples

were feeding the poorest people.Recovery programs helped economy by giving

people jobs.Reform programs tried to make sure that the

depression would never happen again. Some of these programs that people still use

today is Social Security

The Dust BowlJust as some of the programs began helping

farmers, a severe drought hit the Great Plains.

Farmers watched their soil turn to dust in the hot sun.

High winds caused dust storms, leaving the land unusable.

Much of the Great Plains became known as the Dust Bowl.

Places like Dodge City, Kansas were hit hard by the Dust Bowl.

Many people became migrant workers moving from place to place to find work.

Making a DifferenceMany people tried to help those in need.The First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, searched

the country to see how the New Deal was working.

Photographer Dorothea Lange took pictures of people coping with the depression.

John Steinbeck wrote books about living in the 1930’s and the Great Depression.

Entertainment During Hard TimesThe New Deal helped many, but it did not end

the depression.People looked for ways to forget about their

troubles.One new form of entertainment was the

comic book.Characters like Superman and Batman

became poplar.Games at home, like Monopoly, were also

enjoyed.People also went to the movies to forget life

for awhile.People also looked forward to the World’s

Fair. Queens, New York held one in 1939.

Global DepressionThe Great Depression spread to other parts of

the world.Millions were unemployed and feeling

helpless.The hardest hit was Germany.Germany had to repay for the damages of

World War One.Germany was having inflation, or rapid rise in

prices. Germany money became worthless.This will help lead to another world conflict.

Timeline

1933 – President Roosevelt began many of his New Deal programs in the first 100 days of his term.

1935 – The worst dust storm of the decade struck the Dust Bowl of the Great Plains.

1939 – John Steinbeck published his novel about migrant workers, The Grapes of Wrath.
