Charlecote Celebrates The Queen’s 90th Birthday Nearly sixty residents of Charlecote, aged 1 to 95,
celebrated Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday in style in Charlecote’s Village Hall on Saturday, 11
June, the celebrations coinciding with the “national”
weekend of celebrations. All of the guests were
welcomed with a glass of prosecco, and John Lampitt proposed the toast to Her Majesty - followed by a
rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday”. Fortunately the
weather cleared in time for lunch in the garden - a delicious buffet prepared and served by Sue Lampitt,
Vanessa Lewis, Suzanne Johns, Cathie Gilhooly, and
Jill Wilson. Everyone was then thoroughly entertained all afternoon by John Penn and his musical friends.
The ‘Champagne Raffle’ was won by Chris
Johns. HH

Hampton Lucy C of E Primary School and Nursery - Samba Workshop Two of our Music Days have been dedicated to Samba Workshops in preparation for the children’s performance
at the Summer Fete on 25 June. Claire Honey from Warwickshire Music worked with all the classes with drums,
other percussion instruments and whistles! The whole school took part in a performance at the end of the day. SA
Hampton Lucy Neighbourhood Plan The development of the Hampton Lucy Neighbourhood Plan is progressing well and it is almost time to consult
the local community. In order to do this effectively we will be delivering a questionnaire to every household
and business, seeking everyone's views on their aspirations and on how the village can be protected in the future. We need help to do this and would be grateful for any assistance with delivery of the questionnaires and
collection two weeks later. A short briefing meeting will be held in the village hall - look out for more details
on the village notice board. If you are able to offer a few hours please ring Jackie, 01926 640286 or get in touch with any member of the Neighbourhood Plan Committee JW
Crafty Weekend Down at t’ Mill - A Satisfied Customer I took part in the Craft Experience Weekend at Charlecote Mill on 14/15 May and just wanted you all to know
what a wonderful time was had by one and all. To be able to participate in these ancient crafts was a joy. The
craftsmen were passionate about their individual skills and more than willing to share their knowledge - they were inspiring. Karl, thank you for hosting the weekend in this lovely setting and making it so enjoyable. The
food was lovely and you thoughtfully catered for ‘veggies’ and those with lactose intolerance. Well done - can't
wait for the 2017 event! CD

and Sherbourne, is displayed on the notice board in your church.
The Parish Letter
Dear Friends,
A former Bishop of Coventry once talked about how during his mother’s lifetime she had gone from seeing
the milk delivered by a man with a churn on a cart
pulled by a horse to seeing a man walking on the moon. That is an incredible rate of change.
Recent celebrations of the Queen’s 90th birthday made
me reflect on change during her lifetime. Not so much
about change in general but change within the Church of which she is the Supreme Governor – the Church of
England.
At the time of her birth the Church had been using the
Book of Common Prayer for its services since 1662. Considerations of change may just have begun which
led to the publication and use of the 1928 version. It
was then not really until the 1960s with various attempts at more significant changes (Series 1, 2 and 3),
leading to the Alternative Service Book in 1980 and
then Common Worship in 2000 all in more
contemporary language. Moreover, of course, there is scope these days for creating more flexible forms of
service.

St Nicholas’ Church Concerts - Loxley The next concert in the series will be on Sunday, 17 July, at 3.00pm and will feature the Barker String Quartet with
Archie Whitby (cello) and Gerry Hopkin (piano) in a delightful programme of varied and melodic pieces perfect for
Sunday afternoon listening. Gerry Hopkin is Head of Chamber Music at Warwick School and the other musicians are pupils at that school, which is renowned for producing young musicians of a very high standard. The concert will last for
about 45 minutes and afterwards refreshments will be available at “The Fox”. Admission is free with a retiring
collection for the Church Fabric Fund. DW
Carers4Carers Carers4Carers is a support group based in Kineton for carers living in the village and surrounding community. It is well
established and led by local volunteers who have a deep understanding of the many challenges faced by caring families.
The monthly meetings provide an opportunity for carers to relax, share and acquire coping skills and strategies, and access a wide range of relevant information. The organisation supports former carers as well as those currently caring. If
the person they care for can be brought to the hall, they will be looked after in the Companionship Group for the
duration of the meeting, but this needs to be booked in advance. The next meeting will be on Friday, 22 July, 10.30am to 12 noon, in Kineton Village Hall The group is looking to engage an Assistant Part-time Co-ordinator who can relate to
those with caring responsibilities. We are looking for a friendly and outgoing person with the ability to be an effective
team player and who also has a real understanding of carers’ issues, preferably with carer experience. This part-time
position will initially be for approximately three hours a month. For more information about this opportunity or anything to do with the group, please phone 01926 640203 or 07947 893504. E-email [email protected]. GG-S
Also at the time of her birth, not only Bishops but all clergy would have been men. That stayed much the
same for many years but, of course, in relatively recent
years women have become, successively, deacons,
priests and now Bishops. From the viewpoint of 2016 this may not seem radical but it is a big change to have
made after hundreds of years.
And, of course, many Church buildings have been adapted, installing modern facilities and making them
more flexible.
All this led me to think about the potential value of
change. (I believe all these changes have been positive and important for the future of the Church.) But it also
made me reflect that what has not changed is the basic
requirements of life as a Christian: worshipping God and
praying regularly; studying the Bible; loving all our neighbours; and standing up against injustice and evil.
However much the externals may need to move with the
passing of the years neither these nor God’s love for each one of us ever change.

. Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI The members were in charge for the June Meeting, enabling the Committee to take a back seat.
The chair was taken by Margaret Buckingham, with Suzanne Johns as Secretary, and Beryl Penn as
Treasurer. The routine business was efficiently completed, followed by a toast to Her Majesty The Queen in recognition of her 90th birthday. The speaker, Gill Dancer - a very talented member of Hampton Lucy
and Charlecote WI - demonstrated her skill in making cold-porcelain flowers. In less than an hour she produced a
periwinkle spray with the petals beautifully painted in lilac and bright lemon centres. The process can be used in so many ways - cake decorations, button holes or simply for decoration. The evening concluded with a lovely buffet supper. The
subject of the July meeting on Wednesday, 6 July at 7.30pm at Charlecote Village Hall, will be the History of the
Warwickshire Federation, which celebrates its Centenary in 2018, told by WI Advisor Sue Ensor. She is also a member of
the WFWI Creative Committee and member of the NFWI Craft Committee. KCl
Wellesbourne & District Lions Club I can’t believe it’s July already. Sunday, 24 July, is Raft Race day and I hope as many people as possible will come along and watch this great spectacle. This year it celebrates its 40th Anniversary. A huge variety of rafts
will be setting off from Wasperton from 9.00am onwards, passing through Hampton Lucy, Charlecote Park,
Alveston, and Tiddington, finishing opposite the RSC theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. A great viewing point is
from the permissive footpath in the water meadow in
Hampton Lucy near to Charlecote Mill, where the rafters have to negotiate one of the weirs! Park in the village and
look for the footpath sign by the old John Lucy Bridge. It’s
not too late to enter a raft and if you want to take part,
please visit the website www.raftrace.org.uk to find out more information. This year our main beneficiary
is ‘Heart of England Mencap’ based in Clifford
Chambers, Stratford-upon-Avon, and with your generous help we are aiming to raise over £10,000 to
help to fund a fully accessible biking facility for people
with both learning and physical disabilities. It is the school and village fete season again. The Lions will
have a stall at Barford School Fete on Saturday, 9 July,
and at Wellesbourne School on Saturday, 16 July.
Please come along and say “Hello”. AS

Charlecote Park News
We’re currently working with Charlecote Parish Meeting and Warwickshire Highways to make improvements to the highway and verges throughout the village. As part of this work, a number of bollards will be installed at key points
throughout the village to prevent illegal parking. These will be designed by The Cleft Oak Company who also
designed and installed our distinctive oak paling fencing. June brought the big summer change-over for the parterre with the summer bedding planted out and the hedges trimmed. It’s always good to see how quickly these fill out by
early July and bring so much colour to this part of the gardens, as well as the delicious scent from the heliotropes.
West Park remains closed until around the end of July when the fallow deer fawns will have all been born. Take a walk through the parkland when that area re-opens and see if you can spot them. In the Orangery, as part of the
‘Capability Brown 300’ celebrations
this year, we have exhibitions by the
members of three local Embroiderers’ Guilds. Their embroidery is based on
scenes around Charlecote. At the
moment, we’re featuring the talents of the Leamington Spa Guild and a visit to
see their work is well worthwhile.
We’re now putting the finishing touches to the activities at the
Children’s Club - every Thursday in
August - and it would be lovely to see
lots of our local families coming together for these events. Remember
that all children must be accompanied
by an adult. Look out on the website nearer the time for more details. MG

...something to do with Malibou, I seem to remember!
Celebrating Hampton Lucy’s Heritage Over the last eleven years, residents of Hampton Lucy have initiated two very different features of the village - the Charles
Maries Trail and The Spinney. As a young man, Charles Maries attended Hampton Lucy Grammar School, and it was
there that he was inspired by the Headmaster to become interested in botany. He later travelled abroad, collecting plant specimens which were previously unknown in Europe. The Trail contains specimens of some of those plants from China
and Japan and was established as a tribute to him. We intend to celebrate this on Sunday, 17 July, at 2.30pm in the Village
Hall, when there will be short introductory talks together with an exhibition and tours of the trail. Members of the Maries family will be in attendance to celebrate their historic link with our village. Everyone - residents and visitors - will be most
welcome. Hampton Lucy Spinney will also be featured - a very different venture. Previously land used as allotments, it
was planted with native trees with a mown path through, allowing everyone to enjoy the seclusion and appreciate the bio-
diversity which is developing as it matures. A plaque will be placed there in memory of Dr Alan Scaife who was the inspiration and driving force behind it. The afternoon will be rounded off by afternoon tea in the Village Hall from
4.00pm. Everyone will be welcome and a particular invitation goes out to the new residents of the village. HD
‘VEG’ (Hampton Lucy Village Enhancement Group) VEG is an enthusiastic group of Hampton Lucy volunteers. It is partly grant-
aided by the Hampton Lucy Parish Council and amongst its many activities are bulb planting, litter picking, planting and maintenance of the flower beds
and troughs, planting of the Scots pines in the Parish Field, and even cleaning
up the cast iron John Lucy Bridge over the Avon. In 2009 they provided the
‘finger’ signpost and finial, pictured, which is situated at the corner of Bridge Street and Church Street. In 2005/6 VEG set up the Charles Maries Trail, see
above, and continues to support it both practically and financially. They would
like to encourage more residents to join the group. If you are interested just contact Hilary Dunkerton on [email protected] The commitment is
simply the time that you can spare and you will always be most welcome. HD

Lucy Lads Visit Forge Mill
On Thursday, 2 June, The Lucy Lads visited Bordesley Abbey and Forge Mill, the adjacent needle scouring watermill,
both situated in a rural location just outside Redditch. After a welcoming cuppa and cakes, our very knowledgeable guide
gave us a conducted tour of the remains of the Cistercian Abbey, a site which has been extensively excavated and
researched by archaeologists over the past 140 years.
Evidence and records show that the original buildings date
back to 1140AD and the remains show a clear demarcation between the early Norman and later mediaeval architecture.
The abbey was dissolved by Henry Vlll in the 16th C and the
buildings have since been extensively ‘robbed out’ for their stone and tiles. Now only floors, foundations and a few
standing walls remain. None-the-less there is much to see
and the nearby museum gives an excellent insight into the history of the ancient abbey and its estates. After a well-
earned lunch The Lads were then shown around the needle
scouring mill and museum next door. Redditch produced
20 million needles a week in its Victorian heyday! - and still
produces them today although in much reduced quantities. Many of those needles were finished and polished at this mill
by an ingenious mass production process using only water power. Our guide gave us a fascinating and detailed explanation of the whole needle manufacturing process, much of which was done by outworkers in their own back rooms
- sending their products to this mill for finishing and packing. The waterwheel and wonderful old machinery was
operated for us to demonstrate how it was all done. It was an excellent visit and thoroughly recommended - for adults
and children alike. (For more information about The Lucy Lads visit the Hampton Lucy website.) AJW

Editor’s Notes
I’m a little embarrassed that this issue is top-heavy with Hampton Lucy news but can only publish what is sent in. If news and reports aren’t received there is little I can do to redress that balance. Please try to respect the copy deadline
which is published each month. It makes life quite trying to have to completely reformat the newsletter in order to fit in
late copy. I would also appreciate fully written copy, not a brief list of details for me to work up to a readable piece. With regard to dates and advance notice of meetings etc, please send only current dates appropriate to the next issue.
Lists of dates 12 months ahead are not practical. Dates can change and errors creep in all too easily, with
embarrassment all round.
If you have suggestions for improving The Grapevine do let me know. I try to keep an open mind on content and editing and aim to make the newsletter as informative and interesting as possible, but suggestions and contributions are
always welcome.
A huge “thank you” must go to all those who help with producing, proof reading, sorting and delivering The Grapevine
each month. There are too many names to mention but it wouldn’t happen without you all, so many, many thanks.
Have a great summer and will be back in print for September. AJW
