W E L C O M E T O T H E N E XT B I G T H I N G .This brochure is a “self-help” guide to a tool that you
already know so well. Maybe you don’t know it’s name,
and maybe didn’t realise how perfectly it fits your needs
– but it is definitely the Next Big Thing.
Gamification takes the fun and exciting aspects of
game play and applies them to business. It encourages
engagement, action and learning in an enjoyable way.
Problem solving, chance, competition, reward, role play,
incremental progress and just plain old fun are some of
the mechanisms used in games. Using them to achieve
your business objective makes sense!
Primary school teachers know this – they create games
and songs and actions that support learning objectives.
Parents know this – playing games in the car makes a
long drive less tedious. We know this – but somewhere
along the way, we grew up and decided that work is too
important to be enjoyed.
Today, mobile devices are in the hands of everyone we
interact with. They are easy to use and very powerful. New
programming techniques means apps are now affordable
and easy to manage.
G A M I F I C AT I O N I S R E A D Y T O U S E N O W – I T I S T H E N E XT B I G T H I N G .
H O W T O U S E T H I S G U I D E.Our challenge is to explain how gamification works, and
how it can help you. Obviously, the best way of doing
this is to use gamification!
Simply go to the App Store or Google Play and search for
the The Next Big Thing, or scan the QR Code on the back
cover.
We’re using the game mechanic of a scavenger hunt as a
guide to Big Things throughout the Australia East Coast.
With scavenger hunts, you’re given puzzles to solve one-
by-one, leading you to the prize.
The Guide is the first game on the app as a general
example. There are also other hunts included as
examples for different scenarios; the challenges
they face and examples of how gamification
delivers.
OrientationC H A L L E N G E
Sometimes it’s a bit scary learning your way around a
new place – it can be overwhelming. Even with an old-
hand showing you the way, everyone learns at their own
speed, so sometimes—even with all good intentions—
some of the key points just don’t sink in.
By using an app on their mobile device, people can be
given a tour at their own speed, over hours or weeks. With
creative clues and bonus rewards, newbies will soon be
up to speed.
A P P L I C AT I O N
It’s Open Day at the uni. It’s a big step from high school
with so many people, so many buildings, theatres, halls,
libraries... Mary’s a bit anxious... will she be able to cope?
The guy taking them on the tour is very nice, but he talks
so quickly and she’s a bit embarrassed to ask questions.
But with the orientation app, she’s able to go at her own
speed. She’s ticked off 5 items – 2 more and she’s no
longer a “newbie”!
EntertainmentC H A L L E N G E
It’s a crying shame, but sometimes your offerings don’t
excite everyone. This means that not matter how great it
is, the customers that love it may not be able to entice
others to come, or stay longer. This is especially the case
where kids get bored and parents get harassed.
A P P L I C AT I O N
Murray’s Brewery wanted families to stay a bit longer. By
implementing “Pirate Bob’s Scavenger Hunt”, kids have
left the table and are now running through the vines and
gardens. Murray’s even release themed hunts for special
events like Easter. The parents love the activity – and one
more beer.
Holiday DestinationC H A L L E N G E
The best way of getting people to your holiday destination
is word-of-mouth. If they love it, they come back and
bring their friends. Sometimes however, guests need a bit
of a push to get out and enjoy the experiences available
to them – especially the kids. Gamification takes them by
the hand and gives them that friendly nudge.
A P P L I C AT I O N
Imagine the kids running around finding all the exciting
corners and hidden treasures of the resort. Puzzles and
clues entice them to local attractions and activities,
making new friends, or investigating the dining menus.
They receive simple rewards, such as coloured wrist
bands, a special seat at the movie night, and the ability
to show Mum & Dad all the cool things they found out.
Tour Guide CHALLENGE
Galleries and exhibitions use signage to provide
information about each display. These signs have
limited space, are costly and hard to update. With a
variety of visitors, it’s very hard to deliver the right
amount and type of information for everyone.
Having an interactive solution means visitors can receive
as much information as they like, in the format and
language they desire. Administrators can update that
information at no additional cost – whenever they like.
APPLICATION
A museum could have a dual purpose app. A “Game
Mode” where kids can be lead on a hunt, searching for
clues amongst the displays, scanning barcodes and
answering puzzles. Whilst in “Guide Mode” those same
barcodes can be scanned to deliver comprehensive details
about the displays to those who want it.
Shopping Precinct CHALLENGE
Retailers need walk-by traffic. Marketers create events
and competitions to draw more people to the precinct,
but how do you get them to browse the precinct and
visit the retailers?
Social media and email marketing is moderately
successful at reaching the audience, and some recipients
will actually read it, but will special offers be remembered
the next time they visit the shops?
APPLICATION
A Scavenger Hunt guides visitors through the precinct,
challenging visitors to solve puzzles that require they
visit merchant displays. Or they may be required to
answer questions about the branding or advertising of the
sponsors, which means that retailers get their message
across to people who are actually in the location and
ready to purchase. What’s todays Featured Flavour at the
ice cream shop? Will people use an app like this in order
to earn a discount? You bet they will!
Education CHALLENGE
It’s an ongoing challenge: How do we get students to
engage with the learning objectives?
By using fun activities that require a number of skills,
that challenge, and that are interactive, competitive and
reward-based. Computers do a great job here, but they
are predominantly anti-social and hard to manage in a
group environment. We need to get kids active – not more
sitting while staring at a screen.
APPLICATION
Gamification on portable devises is the answer. The “Year
3 Maths Challenge” has many questions set up, with
each ‘game’ delivering 5 randoms to the players: ie. “Go
to the oval. If the cricket nets are at located at “2 o’clock”
what is located at 5 o’clock?”, and “What is the area of
the tuck-shop?”.
Induction CHALLENGE
Induction of new employees can be a very expensive
and time consuming task.
The delivery is uninteresting and often poorly delivered.
And if it’s not done, or not done well, or not easily
reportable and updated – it can cost even more in the
long run.
APPLICATION
For an OH&S induction, staff are lead through educational
information (videos, website links, text and diagrams) as
well as physical locations and equipment, each requiring
simple survey responses or ‘check-in’s’. Their progress is
tracked with time-stamps and responses, highlighting
those staff that have not completed certain areas. Alerts
are sent when annual updates are required and individual
staff reports are available. OH&S managers will know
exactly who has completed their inductions and whether
or not they fully understood the content.
WHAT’S NEXTTalk to us. We would love to hear your objectives
and discuss how gamification could be used to
solve them.
We can brainstorm ideas, create concepts, design,
build, and deliver apps for you. Our systems enable
you to maintain those apps yourself, only returning to
us for more ideas and further functionality.
