Civil War -Lesson 1 part two

Slavery - a practice in which one person (a slave) is owned by another person

Free laborer - a worker who was not owned by another person, they were paid for the work they did

Plantation - large area used to grow crops such as rice, tobacco, and cotton

Factory - a building used for manufacturing goods such as turning cotton into cloth

Slave - a person who is owned by another human being, often required to work long hours with no pay and not allowed to leave owner’s property

Slave owner - a person who owned another human being

The pre–Civil War years (1820–1860, or the

“antebellum years”) were among the most chaotic in American history—a time of full of many changes that took place as the Americas grew.

The North grew by having larger cities, more businesses, and the ability to make and transport products.

The South grew by having smaller cities, bigger plantations, and the ability to use their land to grow crops.

The Civil War was a war between the Northern and Southern states. A civil war is a war between two parts of a single country or nation.

Why would Americans fight each other?There were many reasons. One big reason

was that people could not agree about slavery.

Discuss with a partner why people would disagree about slavery?

The Civil War

Slavery started early in the United States. It started when we were still a group of colonies.

Ships brought in the first Africans to America, but these people did not come here because they wanted to. They were forced to come as slaves. Many had been kidnapped, taken against their will, from their homes in Africa.

Some of these enslaved people were taken to Europe, but many more were taken to North and South America.

Enslaved Africans were chained to each other and crammed into ships, and many of them died on the hard voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. The Africans who survived were sold into slavery.

The Southern states had big farms called plantations. On plantations owners grew crops such as cotton, rice, and tobacco. The farm owners wanted slaves to work on their farms.

Why would the farm owners want slaves to work on the plantations?

The owners were the masters, and they could do what they wanted with their slaves. Many masters forced their slaves to work hard from dawn to dark.

The slaves often had little to eat and only worn-out clothes to wear. If a master did not like the way a slave was working, he could have the slave whipped or punished. Men. women, and children working on a

When African were forced to come to America as slaves, they combined their music with the music they heard in America. The songs they sang, called spirits, often told of their hard lives and their hopes for better times to come.
