Lois and Robert Sayers’ home The Old School, may be just that - but they have sympathetically transformed it into a beautiful home that most would be happy to live in. ‘’The former Headmistress lives in the Old School House next door and many local people have shared their memories of being pupils here and have told us how impressed they are with what we have done to the building’’ says Lois. ‘’It’s a beautiful building with very tall windows and fabulous views across the countryside and parkland that once belonged to the manor opposite’’.

Renovating this century-old building has been a major project for the Sayers family. ’’After the school itself closed it was used as a business and warehouse and so we had to completely gut it,’’ explains the owner. ’’It was an empty shell and so we put in a mezzanine floor throughout in order to create the upstairs. We sought to retain as many of the original features as possible and to use building materials that were sympathetic to the original materials in the school’’

Robert has also replicated the original tall windows at the front of the house at the back in order to create a light space in the kitchen, this has worked well, maximising the views across the parkland and countryside from the kitchen. ’’It has been wonderful to look out at the views while eating dinner at the table,’’ says Lois. ‘’To further exploit the views, Rob put French doors and a balcony off the master bedroom and it has been a luxury to sit and enjoy a drink on the balcony and watch the birds and rabbits. The sunshine pours into this room. We also opened up the ceiling and created a walk in dressing room and spacious en-suite bathroom making the master bedroom a very pleasant place to be’’.

‘’We designed the house to maximise space for our growing children so that they could have privacy and do their own thing,” Lois suggests. “ but it’s also a very

sociable house and because the kitchen is enormous we’ve had many memorable dinner parties with 15 or more people around the table while we are cooking the dinner!.”

All four bedrooms have en-suites and there is also a separate ground floor bedroom which offers flexible accommodation and is perfect for an au pair, guest suite or office. There is also a one bedroom annex with a lounge, kitchen and bathroom ideal for extended family use or office space.

The house has a small private low maintenance garden which is ideal for a busy family ‘’but the great benefit is the sense of open space because of the surrounding countryside but without the upkeep of acerage,” Lois explains.

‘’It’s been a wonderful place to live and we all have some

very happy memories, especially the children who have enjoyed everything about growing up in such a unique home,’’ says Lois.
