In this second instalment of our two part feature article, we continue our look back with the early permanent residents and property holders of Matarangi from 30 years ago, to discover what Matarangi was like in those pioneering days.

The great appeal of Matarangi is the opportunity for a lifestyle centred around outdoor recreation, both on the water and on the reserves, walkways, courts, golf course that the village possesses.

The golf course opened in 1989 the same summer as the new shop and the old shop was relocated to the golf course becoming the club house. Twilight golf evenings became another big weekly event and some folk became really hooked. “On Thursday nights in summer, locals from Opito, Otama, Kuaotunu and Whangapoua would come over and play with us on the nine hole course that had been built by the developer. It was brilliant fun,” reminisces Blue Lewis.

“Even our children were introduced to the game. Peter Moore-Jones was the Golf Course Superintendent and he would give golfing tips to them,” says Louise Falleni. Every evening was then followed by the usual BYO BBQ

session at the finish. “The kids were trained to be the chief cooks on the night. They developed great BBQ skills,” smiles Louise.

Alan Crowcroft also fondly remembers these twilight golf evenings. “Helen and Ted Blackwell were running the golf course back then. We would all go down on a Thursday and take our own beer and after a round everyone would meet up in the shed, which was the club house back then and just enjoy ourselves. It was very different to ‘The Dunes’ of today. It was a terrific time to be here.”

It was this early community that spent tireless hours fundraising for the Fire Brigade building and Community Hall. “We made and sold BBQ tables and the boys raised funds through the tree felling of unwanted pine trees or just by topping them. The New Year’s Eve annual collection was a very social event and we all took part and always collected a good sum for the brigade” said Louise. Blue added that these working bees were really important back then to get things done as was the fundraising to build the Community Hall and get the Fire Brigade started. “They were busy days. We started the boat and fishing club around that time as well,” recollects Blue.

There are many other wonderful memories of these early days. “Our first fire engine was called Flick and we only just managed to get it over the Burma Hill,’’ remembers Louise. “We also had a combined men and women fire practice because most of the men were self employed and often not at Matarangi. The girls in case of fire, had to know what to do! Cheekily the guys would always try to have a bit of fun with us by pressuring up the hoses and try to lift us up off the ground,” laughed Louise.

Kaimoana was a big part of Matarangi life. “I also remember the scallops that would wash up after storms. Through the bush telegraph everyone would know and there was always plenty to go around. I also remember the big schools of Kahawai. You would just throw your line and reel them in. You were always guaranteed a big one. Hunting and gathering in those days were fun times” adds Louise.

The Air Force also played quite a big part in early Matarangi. They landed their Andover at the airstrip for short take offs and landings and they did bush craft training over at New Chums Beach. (Continued on page 6)

Disappointing to see such senseless vandalism. Especially for something which is there to keep children in the shade when playing on the playground equipment down at the village green. The Reserves Committee worked hard in 2018 to get these put up and some thoughtless people with no integrity or maturity, ripped one of these expensive cloths in two at New Year.

On New Year’s Eve our PTA organised a bucket fundraiser for the school in Matarangi and Whangapoua. This was the school’s a major fundraiser for the year and managed to raise $1685.

“This was a great effort by the few volunteers that gave us their time to help,” said PTA parent, Andy Corles.

“In the end we didn’t get around even a quarter of Matarangi and Whangapoua. However we will be back next year with hopefully more volunteers.”

A super effort team for our amazing local school!

Our school year finished off with adrenaline and excitement. On the last day of school, a dad,

Mark Bunyan, jumped his mountain over a line up of teachers and parents much to the hilarity of the children. Mark’s pedigree is that he was a professional mountain biker for many years and trained and coached thousands of people and was also the head coach for the Canadian Down Hill team, bringing four athletes to be World Champions so Mark certainly knew what he was doing! The participants were confident but understandably nervous and the children just loved it!

We are really proud of our Room 2 teacher Darrell Adshead, whose head shave at school in memory of his wife Anna our much loved former principal, raised $1000 for the Mercury Bay Cancer Support Trust. Here is trustee Tony Kelly (on left) accepting the donation from Darrell.

Since school has broken up for the year contactors have laid our brand new astro turf. It looks fantastic! I can’t wait to see the children’s reactions when they get back to school!

It was exciting to see our fantastic school float in the annual Matarangi Santa Parade and we won first prize! A big thank you to our band of wonderful parent helpers that got our spectacular float all decorated and ready!

Happy New Year to you all,

    Mary Kedzlie

News from Thames-Coromandel District Council January, 2021

Have your say on our Freedom Camping Bylaw reviewOur Freedom Camping Bylaw is being reviewed and we want your thoughts about a few changes we’re proposing to some of the current sites and the addition of one new site.

Our consultation is running from 11 December to 2 February 2021.

“We’ve found that some of our designated freedom camping sites are promoted as places to camp and are becoming overpopulated,” says our Mayor Sandra Goudie. “So where we can, we’re looking to increase space at some of these designated areas, such as Danby Field in Thames. Or, in a couple of sites we’re shi ing the designated freedom camping parks just a bit to a more suitable spot,” our Mayor says.

“We’re also suggesting a revamp of all

the signage around the district and more emphasis on promotion and education around responsible camping, to help people do the right thing,” Mayor Sandra says.

To read the full proposals and to have your say online, go to tcdc.govt.nz/freedomcampingreviewOr, pick up a submission form from one of our Council service centres.

“When the Fire Brigade was being built they also came down and helped us as part of their community service,” recollects Louise. “They set up camp where the Cove is now and on their very last night they invited all of us to dinner. I also remember them doing abseiling with Mercury Bay School and we also got to abseil off the Bluff Road. It was amazing fun! We were also invited to their Te Rapa base to join in their annual ‘Top Town’ competition. Paul, Stu, Val and I held our own against the airforce!”

“It was the simpleness of the place that I loved. It was peaceful. There was plenty for kids to do with the beach, riding bikes and playing tennis. I even took up tennis and bought all the gear. At the time Rothmans who owned the Beach Estates were the main sponsor of the NZ Tennis Open so there were good courts here in Matarangi. A lot of people played tennis in the summer. In fact in those early days there was a Matarangi v Whangapoua tennis competition. Like all things in those days it was followed by the usual BBQ,” laughed Heather.

Heather has many other memories to share. “What I remember from those early years are the pilot whale strandings in 1987, planes landing on the beach at low tide, as there was no airstrip then, and then driving

down to the golf course and deciding not to play because it was too busy – I mean any more than about 6 people on the course in those days was considered too busy! I also remember that Sonny Vause and Ian O’Brien organised the building of the jetty down at the harbour, which made it a lot easier for people to launch their boats. That was something that made a huge difference for locals.”

“Matarangi was just total freedom. It was an easy life in many respects. You just got on and did what needed to be done. You did things for yourself, by yourself. I would not change a thing. It was incredible really to live here in the early days. I’d say in about 1992 Matarangi did start to change. It got bigger with the new shops being built and a lot more sections starting to come on the market. I think in those days people had been burnt by the stock market crash and as things improved they looked at property to invest in. A bach at the beach was to them, a sound investment,” says Heather.

Like all the early locals who shared their memories, Alan summed it up perfectly. “I have never regretted shifting here. Although I have seenthe place change for good and for bad, overall it has been phenomenal to live here.

Mini Olympics, Handle the Jandal; Giveaways Galore: A Summer Classic

Warren Male’s travelling roadshow that is Coromandel More FM’s Great Summer Road trip came into the Northern Mercury Bay four times over the Christmas/New Year period. It brought fun and games at our local summer festivals and beach days but also lots and lots of prizes and giveaways.

They were lining up for suncreen at Opito Bay, Angel Bay beef sliders at Matarangi, ice cold water bottles in Kuaotunu and there was plenty more.

It was the 33rd year that Warren and his team had visited Matarangi over the summer holiday peak. It seems to get bigger and bigger with his cavalcade of wagons topping off at 5 vehicles!!

All the events drew great crowds, lots of laughs, great fun, novelty races and throwing competitions as well as the queues of folks lining up for cool free stuff ! If somebody wanted something doing we would all help them out. That’s just the way it was. It has been just the most fantastic lifestyle.”

But what of those very early section owners who just came for the summer? They are a rare breed. We did track one or two down. On a rainy winter’s day in 1976, Aucklander, Phil Rogers aged 30, drove to Kuaotunu to look at a section. On arrival he was told by the salesperson, that the section was not actually in Kuaotunu, but in a place Phil had never heard of, Matarangi. Slightly confused he questioned the salesperson who replied. “Well we are not meant to sell these Matarangi sections yet.” Nevertheless, they drove around the notorious Bluff Road, then headed down a dirt road to an empty section on Kenwood Drive.

After a bit of a friendly haggle Phil secured the section for $150 per month over five years and the lump balance at the end of that period. The all up price was around $10,000. To this day there is great debate who bought into the Matarangi subdivision first. Was it Phil or Sir Barry Curtis who did the original survey, or someone else? Nevertheless, Phil considers he has owned for the longest time then any residential

section in Matarangi. He now lives on that very same Kenwood section he bought 45 years ago now with his South Korean born wife Kyung.

“The first summer in 1976 there were about 20 people here other than my first wife and kids,” recollects Phil. “All anyone had was a tent. This house like many came much later. There were was no toilet and the water came from the land agents house down the street, the only new house built at the time, other than the old Simpson farm house. Every second day I had to lug four 20 litre containers of water to get us through. Things like septic tanks and water bores came in the years that followed.”

The quietness, the sea and the outdoors are what appealed to people like Phil, Heather, Blue, Alan, Paul, Louise and Tony way back then and still appeals to them now as residents all those years later. Matarangi early sales material described the place as ‘out of this world’.

For those ‘originals’ it sounds like it certainly has been ‘out of this world’!

Heather Arthur and husband Lindsay have called Matarangi home longer than anyone else.

Jupiter and Saturn are rapidly moving to be behind the Sun so are setting with it this month and thus lost from view in its glare. However early risers may just catch a glimpse of Saturn early in February just before dawn as it moves to be on the other side of the Sun. They will both be morning objects for the next several months. Bright and distinctly reddish Mars can still be seen high overhead in the evenings all month. It is however getting steadily fainter each week as it rapidly moves away from us and is already only half as bright as it was in October when at its closest.

Venus which is the same size as the Earth is a brilliant sight in the eastern predawn sky all month and is unmistakable although it will be very low on the horizon. Faint Mercury can be seen very low in the west just after sunset especially towards the end of the month. It can be distinguished from as star as it, like all the planets, doesn’t twinkle.

The International Space Station (ISS) makes some bright passes this month but they are all for early risers occurring between 4 and 6am! Keep in mind that these times, especially towards the end of the month, may change if the seven person crew has to

alter the ISS’s orbit at short notice to avoid a piece of space junk. The huge constellation of Orion with its ‘pot’ is high overhead in the evenings along with the Pleiades or Mataraki in the northeast.

January 10 – A crescent Moon lies just to the left of the red giant star Antares in the dawn sky.

January 11 – The Moon now sits half way between reddish Antares and brilliant Venus at dawn.

January 12 – Brilliant Venus lies right next to a very thin crescent Moon at dawn.

January 20 – A first quarter Moon lies directly to the left of reddish Mars in the evening.

January 21 – The Moon is now directly above reddish Mars all evening.

January 22 – The Moon can be found about half way between Mars on the left and the Pleiades or Mataraki on the right in the evening.

January 23 – Early risers can see the ISS from 5:49am in the NW eventually passing right beside

Venus. In the evening Matariki lies just below an increasingly bright Moon. Binoculars will help find it.January 24 – Faint Mercury is at its furthest from the Sun tonight and might be visible very low in the west just after sunset.

January 25 – An early ISS pass again from 5:51am in the west passing just below the southern cross.

January 26 – The ISS makes a bright pass from 5:04am in the NW passing high overhead.

January 28 – Another early ISS pass from 5:05am in the west.

January 29 - A bright but very early ISS pass occurs from 4:19am in the SE starting just below the southern cross.

February 6 – If you have a very clear eastern horizon this morning you might just catch a glimpse of brilliant Venus very low in the eastern pre-dawn sky with faint Saturn just below it.

THE BIG DIGA crowd of several hundred showed up at Matarangi Beach on December 28th to watch the kids in the annual ‘Big Dig,’ find prizes.

Children aged from tiny tots to 13 using just their hands, dug frantically in the sand to find ice block sticks, which they could trade in for a prize. It certainly kept Simone and her team from Richardsons Real Estate busy keeping up with wave after wave of eager kids!

As a spectator event it is well ... quite spectacular, watching a couple of hundred kids ripping through the sand all at once, to secure their loot and then rushing off full steam to claim the prize.

Thanks to Richardsons Matarangi for once again arranging The Big Dig, putting a smile on kid’s faces and donating the prizes.

A busy time for the Richardsons staff on the desk.

Keith Goodall giving the throng of kids their pre-dig instructions.

Absolute concentration and keen competition from this bunch of 5 year olds.

We have a small but dedicated team that have worked hard behind the scenes with a vision to create a fully functional community patrol for Matarangi.

We are pleased to say that the patrol vehicle has clocked many hours cruising the streets day & night, tirelessly looking for any anomaly that is out of character.

A popular question is, “Are the cameras working at the entrance of Matarangi? The answer is “Yes!” When directed by police these cameras can be accessed to retrieve photos.

In the New Year we will increase the number of patrollers and all going well you will see us out and about.

Remember it is everyone’s responsibility in the community to report to the police, any suspicious activity by calling 111 or 105 if it is non urgent.

    Matarangi Update

It has been a fairly busy month for call outs with nine to attend. Four medicals, two landing zones required for Westpac helicopter, one vegetation fire and two small nuisance fires in Matarangi.

Unfortunately the vegetation fire was caused by fireworks near the boat ramp. This was particularly concerning as it came within three metres of a residential property.

Please remember that there is a total fire ban on the Coromandel

Peninsula and this includes fire works. Fireworks could easily start a fire through ember transfer or directly from the fireworks.

The Matarangi Beach Summer Festival is well under way and we were pleased to assist with the Santa Parade and we had our very successful Open Day at the Fire Station. This was well supported by the public and I think the favourite activity was the fire hose which kids had the opportunity to knock

We have two events left to help out with our rescue boat, the Rings to Matarangi Swim and the Cardboard Cup.

Please stay safe out there and enjoy the remainder of the Summer Break and remember the Total Fire Ban.

    Regards Stu Arnold

    Chief Fire Officer.

    CORNER

Woohoo! Congratulations this month goes to both Matarangi Four Square for its two first division lotto wins, a week apart and the lucky punters who came away with $500,000 and $250,000 respectively. This is certainly a case of what goes round comes round. Our wonderful local store has already been voted the best Four Square in the country for 2020 and is known

for its amazing customer service, generosity and kindness so they really deserve this. Proprietor Darren Walker told the MBP that that store sold a winning division 2 ticket at exactly the same time in 2019 and recently in November the store also sold a winning $40,000 instant kiwi! Two first division winners a week is pretty unique.

It was a glorious day for the 3rd Annual Matarangi Mile held on December 27th as part of the Matarangi Beach Summer Carnival. Organised by the MBP, the races were run at low tide on the sands of our beautiful Matarangi Beach and there certainly was some athletic action. As in other years the event was a measured mile from the Village Green entrance on the beach to the Ocean Close entrance and return.

Like last year the Women’s Open was a thrilling finish with only seven seconds between the top four placegetters. They all smashed the record of 6:36 belonging to last year’s winner Ruby Farquhar. First was Felicity Eillis (6.22); 2nd Zara Pomfret (6.24); 3rd Grace Meredith (6.26) and 4th Jade Holmes (6:29).

Harry Ewing’s record last year of 5:19 in the Men’s Open was also beaten by first place getter Alistair McDowell (5:17). Second was Ben Rickerby (5:47) and third was Tom Turner (6:04).

The youngest competitor prizes went to 9 year old Ashton Mellor and 13 year old Grace Meredith. Twin brothers Bryce and Bradley Holmes will have to share their prize as the oldest male competitors and a very fit looking Kirsty was the oldest female!

Down on the beach watching the race was Jack McDowell the very proud 97 year old Grandad of winning cousins Felicity Eillis and Alistair McDowell. Jack really enjoyed seeing his progeny perform so well! “I think I might take part next year”, laughed Jack! A big thank you to our sponsors - Louise and Pip from Ray White Matarangi for their prizes, loaning their gazebo and assistance on the day and 100% Electrical Whitianga and Stirling Sports Whitianga for their generous prizes. The MBP would also like to thank all of the participants and supporters who turned up for the event.

Here is Santa pictured with Alex Tahere from Morrinsville, reading the MBP at his Christmas House in Wharekaho. It was the last year that Santa opened up his famous house where delighted children could view his fantastic Christmas displays with trains and over 100 singing and dancing Christmas features and of course meet Santa himself. Thank you Santa. You have brought so much pleasure and joy to many children over the years and at the same time raising money for the Mercury Bay Day Camp.

Everyone was in their festive gear for the Matarangi Santa Parade organised by Puku and Kerre’s Liquor Store on December 20th. Excited kids lined the street to see the decorated floats, gather up the lollies and of course to see Santa himself. It was great to see the Te Rerenga School float taking away the top prize this year with local children dressed as Christmas Elves and parcels. Some parents and their principal were also on board!

Sam Ward won the men’s race in an outstanding time of 13:14 and narrowly edged Nick Bone by 2 seconds who lead at the first mark. Andrew Brown came in third in a 13:46 which would have claimed him a win in some prior years..

Daniel Kregting also cracked the 15 minute mark in a time of 14:30 to win the boys under 16 division and was 4 minutes ahead of his next competitor in the junior event.

Kudos to Mike Gallagher who was tailend charlie in a credible time of 31.37.

The fishing has been somewhat sporadic over December with the water temperature beginning to rise and then falling back to the 14 to 15 degree area. Fortunately it is on the rise again and the fishing is on the improve. Some nice fish are being caught around the 30 metre area.

There has been a 2 year voluntary Rahui applied to the Opito bay and surrounding areas relating to the taking of scallops. This has been instigated by the local Iwi and the local residence to try and save this fishery. The area has been decimated by commercial dredging over the years and now the bottom habitat has been destroyed to the extent that this once bountiful fishery is virtually non- existent. Research and monitoring is ongoing over this period. Please respect this Rahui and hopefully there will be some recovery.

We held our annual Bar Crossing Advisory Seminar on the 28th Dec. It was attended by over 120 people and hopefully they all have a greater respect for the Bar and have a greater understanding and less stressful experiences crossing.

The 2nd January Fishing Competition was held in favourable conditions with 130 contestants. The extensive prize list was courtesy of our major sponsors, the Moss family, the Vegar family, Matarangi 4 square, Matarangi Beach Realty, Puku & Kerre’s Liquor Store, NZ Rangehood Installers and Ray White Realty. The winners were;Heaviest John Dory. Wayne Vegar 1.150kg; 3rd heaviest Kahawai, Mark Fisken 2.638kg; 2nd heaviest Kahawai, R Pagani 2.650kg; Heaviest Kahawai, G Buckton 2.666kg; 3rd

Out & About: summer family fun Local Radio Legend Warren Male from Coromandel’s More FM brought his Summer Prize Patrol team four times to Matarangi, as well as Kuaotunu, Whangapoua and Opito Bay over the main two weeks of the Christmas holidays both joining in and creating festive family fun.

    Matarangi ROCKS

One of the great traditional Summer Festival children’s events every year is Matarangi Rocks, a good old fashioned treasure hunt. On December 29th 50 Bright Red Rocks numbered 1 to 50 were hidden around Matarangi by the crew of the Matarangi 4 Square for children along with their mum’s and dad’s to go find and return to the store to claim a bag of goodies!

By the end of the day 46 of the numbered red rocks had been bought into the store. To make sure all the rocks were claimed 4 Square owners Sharon and Darren posted a map on Facebook as a clue to find the remaining 4 undiscovered rocks. Featured: A couple of keen young treasure hunters, Violet and Noah Comer, who found their red rocks down on the sand dunes.

Bar Crossing Safety Seminar See’s Strong TurnoutStu Arnold from FENZ and Pete Murphy from the Boat & Fishing Club were rapt with the full house turnout for the Whangapoua Bar Crossing Seminar held at the Fire Station on December 27th. Every year there are callouts onto the bar due to capsized boats.

Always seek current information on the bar before you head out onto the water.

Opito Bay Family Fun Day Was Massive!!

Alexia Edens with mum Jen after she won the the girls 3 - 4 years running race.

The mixed 8-9 years boys and girls race drew a lot of fast competitors.

A massive crowd of around 700 in absolutely brilliant weather turned out on New Years Day for the annual family fun day at Opito Bay for all sorts of beach sports activities like the beach sprints, egg throwing, 4 km beach run, jump sack races and a whole host of other novelty events. According to the locals Opito Bay has a classic Kiwi summer at the beach atmosphere and that events like the fun day is to celebrate that.

    THE

    WINE

    CLUB

    REPORT

‘Dan the Man’ was back in town showcasing Mills Reef wines for the Christmas Wine Club meeting. Five wines were on offer which Dan said he had selected to be good summer starters, followed by a couple of serious finishers.

The first was the Mills Reef Bubbles which Dan described as a ‘Spritzy Methode Traditionale’.

The second wine was the Mills Reef Reserve Rose which Dan called their ‘Covid Vintage Rose’ as it was made during the 2020 lockdown.

The Mills Reef Reserve Chardonnay 2019 was next up which Dan said was Mill’s Reef ’s number one selling wine.

The next two wines were reds from their Elspeth range. Elspeth is their top tier of wines and the grapes for the red wines come from the Gimblett Gravels District in the Hawkes Bay. This tier is named in honour and memory of the winemaker’s Grandmother, Elspeth Preston. We tried the Mills Reef Elspeth Cabernet Merlot 2016 which has been applauded by Michael Cooper and the Mills Reef Elspeth Syrah 2016 which Dan said is a personal favourite of the owners.

The evening concluded with Puku wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas and thanking for all the support they have received this year particularly during Covid and the slower winter months. The next wine club gathering will be in March 2021.

The wines are available at Puku and Kerre’s Liquor Store.

With the New Year now is the time to join the Matarangi Community Club if you are a bach owner or living in the local area. Individual, family and golfing memberships are available.

The Dunes Restaurant and Bar have stunning views over our beautiful golf course and the nearby Coromandel Range. The golf course is open for members and green fee players.

Originally designed by New Zealand golfing legend Sir Bob Charles, The Dunes has been a must-play course on the serious golfers’ itinerary for almost three decades.

Originally a 9-hole course it was expanded to full 18-hole championship status 15 years ago and two years ago hosted an NZPGA pro-am event.

The Dunes Community Club exists for the betterment of services and enjoyment available to the local community and Matarangi and surrounding settlements visitors.

The Club provides a supportive, inclusive and informative environment for all Members of the Club and any other clubs and organisations (e.g. lawn bowling club), which may base their activities at the Dunes Club House.

MRAI has been working hard this year to get the cameras at the entrance up and running. We are happy to advise the cameras are now fully functional.

The cameras are set up for number plate recognition and full motion, which can be zoomed in on. Community Patrol, security cameras, burglar alarms, personal security, are all for deterrent factor. All of these have a part to play in making Matarangi safer.
