?0remniIn order that the cherished memories of our years at Central High do not dim or fade, we,
the members of the class of '60, present the third edition of the PANTHER.
We shall recall the ups and downs that are all blended into our high school experiences
while turning the pages of this souvenir of significant days at Central High School in later
years.
We, the PANTHER STAFF, are indebted to the many friends for their co-operative efforts
and conspicuous assistance. May I now extend to you our most hearty acknowledgements.
School Philosophy
Our philosophy of education is one which believes the schools are maintained primarily for
children, that these children are individual boys and girls, entitled to be dealt with as such.
Dedication
The senior class of Central High School dedicates this annual to one who has labored so
unselfishly with us during our four years of high school. His never-ending efforts and patience
has helped many of us in our most difficult moments of learning. His humorous spirit has
helped many of us to feel happy and up to par when we were faced with discouragements.
We, the PANTHER STAFF, dedicate this 1960 annual to you - MR. AUSTIN C. MURRELL,
in memory of the senior class of 1959-60.
To the members of the Senior Class of 1960, I wish to take this opportunity to ex-
tend to you and your sponsor my deep appreciation for your efforts in preparing this
yearbook.
In future years we are sure that we will be able to find in this book evidences of
the many worthwhile experiences that were yours and ours. In the years that lie
ahead it will renew pleasant memories that can never be erased because of this book.
In leaving your Alma Mater, "Dear Old Central, " be well aware of the changing
times in which you are living. May you find reasons to have faith in the future and
exert your best efforts to find your place in life.
I extend to each of you my sincere best wishes and hope that you will put your
trust in the Father of all mankind for success.

Class Mistory
The sun shone. It was a fine September morning in 1956; we gathered in the
school's auditorium waiting to be assigned our classes. Sixty-four ambitious students,
ready to tackle a four year adventure that encompassed the social, cultural and intel-
lectual aspects.
The first year of our adventure we were divided into two sections. Needing an
able leader, section "A" chose Willie Greene as president of the class with Mrs. Thelma
Branch as advisor. Section "B" chose Delois Spruill as president with Mr. Austin C.
Murrell as advisor. The two sections advanced from mediocrity to a marked degree of
success under their leaders. We were well-represented in the 4-H Club, Student Coun-
cil, Glee Club, Band and Dramatics. Raymond Atkinson, Frank Howell and Walter
Battle were outstanding on the Junior Varsity basketball team. Janece Coley was voted
"Best Supporting Actress" at the dramatics festival in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
In our second year of adventure we were combined. As we tramped our way
through the many adversities concominant with any beginning, we became aware that
there were yet fundamentals that we should know. Fred Simmons was chosen President
and Mr. Austin C. Murrell, our advisor. As we journeyed down the rugged road to suc-
cess, we passed at different intervals that which we had accomplished fortified with
one year's experience; we thought we could possibly go on to do greater things. It was
in this year that Alice Coley and Nathan Pender represented us in the Student Council;
the Sophomore's float won second place in the Homecoming Parade; Gladys Bowden
was chosen as the N. F. A. Sweetheart, and Willie Green won first place in the Oratori-
cal Contest at the N.F.A. Federation.
Having satisfied our desire for the basic things and gaining tremendous experience,
we were now in our third stage of adventure. Mr. Murrell was still our advisor and we
chose Janece Coley as our President. Mildred Jackson, Delois Spruill, Carolyn Korne-
gay, Rosemary Jackson, Janece Coley, and Willie Greene were eligible for member-
ship in the Honor Society. Janece Coley was voted Vice President of the Student Coun-
cil and Carolyn Kornegay and Odell Coley were representatives. In the social realm,
Shirley Matthews was runner-up Homecoming Queen. Janece Coley, Elna Smith and
Carolyn Kornegay were presented to society at the annual Cinderella Ball. We hon-
ored the seniors with a very memorable Junior-Senior Prom, the theme was "April in
Paris, " with music by the Bill Walton Combo.
We reached our fourth stage of adventure minus twenty-one of the students that
had begun with us. Willie Green was chosen as our President and Mr. Murrell, our
advisor. Many seniors participated in and held high offices in various clubs and organ-
izations of the school. Willie Green was President of the Student Council, Shirley
Matthews was President of the Glee Club, Carolyn Kornegay was President of the 4-H
Club and Rosemary Jackson was President of the Crown and Scepter Club. Raymond
Atkinson was outstanding on the basketball team. Shirley Matthews was initiated into
the Honor Society (Crown and Scepter). Forty-two of us attended High School Senior
Day at the Agricultural and Technical College in Greensboro, North Carolina. During
the summer of 1959 Raymond Atkinson, Howard Rodgers, Janece Coley, and Carolyn
Kornegay represented Central at the 4-H Shortcourse at the Agriculture and Technical
College. Willie Greene attended the science summer school at Agriculture and Tech-
nical College, completing the course with a "B" average.
On the strength of our achievements we are now prepared to enter yet another
stage of adventure. However we stop here to take a backward glance over the previous
stages of adventure and gain new vigor to conquer all the stages of adventure that we
may pass through in our efforts to reach success.
Carolyn Kornegay, Historian

Tune: Dream Cantata.
Farewell, Central, farewell to thee, our Central days are coming to an end, but we'll
look back at our days here as we step forward to our career.
The road's been steep and hard to climb, at times we thought the journey'd never
end, but we worked on to higher goals and never thought to be discouraged, to descend
Farewell, Central, farewell to thee, may prowess by thy guardian at the shore,
and may the zeal at Central High be present now and evermore.
Our teachers have been really great. They've given their labor and their time, but
we shall not fail to Contemplate and keep what they have taught us in our minds,
and in the midst of scorn and leers, our reminescents will bring us back to these years.
