Stewardship A Way of Life
This Week’s Readings
John the Baptist’s call to repentance is echoed in the US Bishops’ pastoral letter on stewardship: “Christians must beg God for the grace of conversion: the grace to know who they are, to whom they belong, how they are to live - the grace to repent and change and grow, the grace to become good disciples and stewards.”
Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who strive to respond to God’s grace through service to our parish and the wider community, especially our Parish Social Ministries and Senior Services.
Sharing One’s Material Resources in the Parish

2017 Giving Tree
This is the last weekend for taking ornaments for the 2017 Giving Tree. While we recognize that it seems early, we do
need to have all gifts returned by next weekend to ensure they are handed out in time for Christmas. Your gifts have always helped brighten the holiday for many in need. For example, last year the Giving Tree program helped provide gifts to over 100 children in families working to overcome the disease of addiction. Afterwards, we received a letter of gratitude from the head of the Nassau County Department of Health’s Opiod Treatment Program stating, “Parents in the program responded with gratitude, smiles and even a few tears and with sincere thanks for helping them make Christmas a special time for their children and offering them a glimmer of hope that they might not otherwise have had.” We at St. Agnes thank you in advance for your continued support and generosity with this year’s Giving Tree.
Religious Retirement
There will be a special collection this weekend for Religious Retirement and elderly Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests who have served us for many years, and now need funding for medications, nursing care and more. Please give to those who have given a lifetime. Thank you for your generosity.
2018 Religious Art Calendars
A very special thank you to Mr. Tom Glynn of the Glynn Funeral Home for his generous donation of the 2018 Religious Art Calendar which has been placed at the doors of the Cathedral. Please remember to take one home with you.

St. Agnes Cathedral School
Principal’s Announcements
The Second Week of Advent
Almighty and merciful God, may no earthly undertaking hinder those who set out in
haste to meet your Son, but may our learning of
heavenly wisdom gain us admittance to his company.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
This week the students are continuing to perform their good deeds and acts of kindness in preparation for the baby Jesus. The 8th graders in AA and AE will participate in a field trip to the Mineola Courts. Report cards will be distributed to the students on Tuesday. All tuition accounts must be up-to-date in order to receive your child’s report card. Wednesday, December 13th and Friday, December 15th are noon dismissals for Parent-Teacher Conferences. Aftercare is not in effect. Peace and Blessings this Second Week of Advent.

From the Rector — Dear Parishioners: I write to express a word of welcome to someone whom many of us know already because of his service over the past 13 years as Secretary to Bishop Murphy. In January 2018, Monsignor Robert Morrissey will begin his new assignment as Judicial Vicar for the Diocese with residence at St. Agnes Cathedral. As Judicial Vicar, Monsignor Morrissey will be overseeing the work of the Diocesan Tribunal and its work with helping people obtain annulments as well as assisting the Bishop, diocesan entities and individuals in other areas of Canon Law. As a resident, Monsignor Morrissey will be free, when his office responsibilities permit, to assist us especially in the sacramental life of the parish. Monsignor Morrissey and I are classmates (something that began over 45 years ago when we were freshmen at St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary in Uniondale) and I recently joked with him that it’s going to feel like we are back in the seminary as we live on the same hallway. They were good years together back then, and I have little doubt that it will be a good experience for us today. Please also know that Father Eric Fasano is assuming the responsibilities of Secretary to the Bishop in light
of Monsignor Morrissey’s new assignment. Father Fasano had been assigned to the Diocesan Tribunal with residence at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Inwood. He will now reside in the Bishop’s Residence and we will undoubtedly get to see and know him as he assists the Bishop in his daily and sacramental duties.
To both Monsignor Morrissey and Father Fasano—welcome and God Bless you in your new responsibilities and residences. In the Peace and Love of Christ,
Father Bill

Flowers for the Cathedral
and the Homebound
You will notice that in your packet of contribution envelopes, there is an envelope for flowers for Christmas. In addition to using this collection to decorate the Cathedral for Christmas, we would like to send a poinsettia plant to all our ill and homebound parishioners. Many of these people have worshipped in the Cathedral for years and are now confined to their homes. Your generous response to this collection will help to defray the cost of flowers and plants. If you know of anyone who is ill or homebound, please call the rectory at 766-0205 with the name, address, and phone number of the person.

St. Agnes Parish Outreach
We are once again collecting new Christmas toys for the needy children of our parish. All donations may be dropped off at the Outreach Office. In addition, what might be most useful and practical for teenagers would be gift cards to Old Navy, Best Buy, Modell’s, Target, Kohls and Payless Shoes. Also, in families where there is sickness or unemployment or single moms, gift cards to King Kullen are most appreciated. Your kindness will make this a much brighter Christmas for those in need.

March for Life January 19, 2018
Please join the Respect Life Committee at St Agnes for this year’s March for Life in Washington DC. This peaceful demonstration witnesses for the 55 million babies that have been murdered by abortion since 1973 and has been described the greatest human rights violation of our time. We also protest the more recent development of the drive to legalize euthanasia in our states. St Agnes Cathedral will, again, provide a bus on Friday, January 19, 2018 for pilgrims from the Rockville Centre area. This demonstration for life continues to make a difference in protecting innocent unborn children from the evil of abortion. Roe vs. Wade originally allowed abortions in the 1st trimester of pregnancy and has now been interpreted to include any time during pregnancy, up to immediately before delivery. This is not a Women’s Health issue as abortion advocates proclaim, it is an issue that defines the dignity of the human person. Please consider joining the hundreds of thousands of people going to Washington D.C. on Friday, January 19, 2018. Our bus leaves from the Cathedral at 6:00 a.m. after a 5:30 a.m. mass and blessing. We will return to the Cathedral prior to 11:00 p.m. that evening. It is important that you make a reservation on the bus by e-mailing St Agnes at [email protected] or by calling the rectory at (516) 766-0205. Your reservation must include your cell phone number and e-mail address.
Availability of Counselors

Candlelight Carol Sing The Parish of St. William the Abbot in Seaford will be holding its 6th Candlelight Carol Sing on Wednesday, December 20th at 7:30pm. A wonderful event that’s already become a holiday family tradition, attendees participate in singing familiar Christmas favorites as well as being entertained with the sounds of beautiful music provided by professional musicians, handbells and a wonderful group of singers. A featured moment of the evening is the singing of the familiar “Silent Night” carol with the church illuminated only by candlelight. Arriving early is recommended. Those arriving early (on or before 7:00pm) will enjoy warm cider or hot chocolate on the front plaza around a fire while a brass quintet serenades them. Admission is free, although free-will offerings are accepted. Please bring your family and friends for an unforgettable event. For more information please call our music office at (516) 781-3253 or email at [email protected].
