Beverly Hills Veterans Day Essay

“Freedom. It's a very powerful word, but not

everyone has freedom,” writes Beverly Hills

Middle School sixth grader Madison Luther in her

on to express that veterans bravely serve to protect

the freedoms cherished by Americans and to keep

Veterans and she writes to honor him and to

specifically remember World War I Veterans since

this year marked the 100 year anniversary of the

end of WWI.

Madison’s essay took second place in The Delaware County Intermediate Unit, U.S.

ceremonies of Media’s Veterans Day parade this past November 12th. The other students

were: 1st Place: Makenna Linsky, E.T. Richardson Middle School, 6th grade and 3rd Place

Elizabeth Johnstone, Radnor Middle School, 8th grade. Madison also presented her essay to

the UDSD Board on November 13th. Madison and other students entered the contest after

working on their essays in Mrs. Ruddy’s Creative Writing class. From the class, nine essays

were entered and Madison’s was selected from 50 6th through 8th grade entries countywide.

Beverly Hills Middle School is proud to recognize the elite students who have been added to the Kodiak Registry for the second marking period. The students that were added had to go through a rigorous application process. In order to be added to our most recognized registry, students must submit their application with their report card from the first marking period. These students must have an excellent GPA, contribute to the school, have an excellent attendance record, and perform community service. All applicants that were selected for the registry were called to the cafeteria and sent on a scavenger hunt. Eventually, the students ended up in the gymnasium where they were treated to snacks, school supplies and their Kodiak Registry Membership Card! This card allows students to get privileges at school such as first in line at lunch and a 10% discount in the Bear Cave. Beverly Hills is proud to announce this is the most students we have ever added to the registry! We have a total of 150 students that were added. Students added to the registry for the second marking period are listed on pages 3-5. Students who stay on the registry for three consecutive marking periods will be invited to a luncheon at Springfield Country Club in June!

Freedom. It's a very powerful word, but not everyone has freedom.

What even is freedom? I searched it up, and this is the definition of freedom:

“The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.”

Some brave people give up their freedom to keep the world safe. These people are called veterans. On

November 11, 2018, it will be 100 years since World War I.

Thank you to all the men and women who served in World War I, you all were true heroes. The war started

on July 28, 1914. It was mainly triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo,

but that is just one of the many reasons that World War I started.

Today we honor you. Because of you, every night I get to go home to my family. My Great Grandad, William

Rachor served in WWII.

He taught his kids to honor the flag, and to respect all Veterans because he was a veteran. Where my

Grandmom’s family lived, Army planes used to fly over and whenever they did, Grandad would silently stop

and stare. He was probably thinking back to WWII, hearing planes fly over as he was hiding in a fox hole. It

must have been hard to think back to that. The time you almost died.

He had a family, a baby on the way, if he had died, my family wouldn't be here. All of the veterans in the

crowd have risked their lives so other families could have one. Thank you to the people in the crowd who

I have been in the District since 2002. I coached Basketball and Golf at the High School. I taught Social Studies and ran the RY program at the High School till 2014. I came to BH in the 2014/2015 school year. I am currently the lead teacher for 6th grade. I have 2 sons that take up all of my free time coaching their sports and attending their events.

This is my fourth year teaching and here at BHMS. I graduated from West Chester University with certifications in Special Education and Regular Education PreK-4. I graduated from Cabrini University in August of 2018 with a Master's Degree of Education. I love my job because I am able to help my students grow, improve, and become successful academically and socially. BHMS is a great place to work because of the supportive staff members that help me everyday.
