HARRISBURG – The House of Representatives on Monday approved Rep. Parke Wentling’s (R-Crawford/Erie/Lawrence/Mercer) House Resolution 1065 to mark Oct. 15, 2018 as Sons of the American Revolution Day in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the American Revolution is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.
“As part of the celebration to honor the Sons of the American Revolution, I was privileged to have as my guests to the Capitol numerous officers of the organization as well as a few members of the Daughters of the American Revolution,” Wentling said. “The Sons of the American Revolution is an organization that celebrates those who took part in the founding of our great nation. The mission of its more the 34,000 members is to keep alive the stories of patriotism of our founding members.”
Wentling’s guests toured the Pennsylvania State Archives and the State Museum, where they viewed historically significant items of the American Revolution. The guests were honored in the House and witnessed passage of Wentling’s House Resolution 1065. The group also met with House Speaker Mike Turzai in his office and attended the Senate for passage of a companion resolution, Senate Resolution 461.
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution is the largest male lineage organization for descendants of those who served or assisted the colonies during the Revolutionary War.

President’s Remarks Raynold L. Prusia, Sr., PASSAR President
The Pennsylvania SAR (PASSAR) is celebrating its 125h Anniversary as of November 23, 2018. PASSAR Officers and Guest were invited to attend the Pennsylvania SAR Recognition Day at the Pennsylvania Capital Complex at Harrisburg, PA on Oct. 15, 2018. The PA House of Representatives had passed House Resolution 1065 which designated October 15, 2018 as “Sons of the American Revolution Day” in Pennsylvania sponsored by Parke Wentling and other Representatives.The Speaker of the House, Mike Turzai also gave us a citation recognizing our PASSAR organization for our 125th Anniversary. The PA Senate gave us a congratulations recognition letter sponsored by Senator Scott E. Hutchinson and other Senators.
There were 28 PASSAR Officers and Guest that attended this event including National SAR Secretary General John (Jack) Manning and wife Sheila, Atlantic Mid States Association Vice President General Louis (Lou) Raborg, Jr., and Guest from the DAR.
The Fall BOM Meeting on Nov 2-3, 2018, hosted by the Continental Congress Chapter, York. The Friday afternoon tour of the York Colonial Complex, site of the 2nd Continental Congress, York Courthouse and Colonial Village led by Compatriot Thomas Gibson, York Historian, was very informative and interesting. The Sat. BOM Meeting was well attended with representation for16 Chapters in attendance of the 24 PASSAR Chapters. Chapter Presidents and Officers are encouraged to attend the scheduled Quarterly BOM Meetings. The Continental Congress Chapter is commended for accomplishing, planning and having the Fall BOM event along with lunch, and the 125th Anniversary cake.
Chapter Officers, mainly Treasurers, however Presidents, and Secretaries can help, motivate and have Chapter Members pay their 2019 Annual Dues by Dec 15, 2018. Selected Chapter Officers can monitor the PASSAR.org dues webpage to determine the status of the Chapter Members as they pay the 2019 SAR Dues. For the Members that still have unpaid 2019 Dues, please contact them by email or telephone, to remind them that their 2019 Annual Dues must be paid by Dec 31, 2018, or their SAR Membership will be dropped by the National SAR. Chapter Officers/Treasurers having problems accessing their Chapter Membership Dues status page can contact the PASSAR Treasurer, Donald Mengle or myself, to help them review Chapter Membership Dues Status.
On another note, for the Chapters to maintain their non-profit tax exempt status with the IRS, it is imperative that the Chapter Treasurer or Officer file a 990-N tax form every year with the IRS. Provided two years in a row is missed, the 3rd year, the tax-exempt status could be lost, and fines can be levied by the IRS. Note, electronic filing of the 990-N tax form can be done with the IRS online, and please file it every year to maintain tax-exempt status.
The PASSAR State level, has been lacking for Youth Contest and Awards - Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest Committee Chairman. Compatriot William (Bill) H. Baker, II has agreed to fill this position as the Rumbaugh Oration Committee Chairman Chair. Bill Baker can be contacted at tele: 248-701-5267 or email: [email protected] and he is looking forward to having more involvement/participation with PASSAR Chapters promoting the SAR Rumbaugh Oration Awards Program.
We need more Chapter participation in promoting the SAR Public Service and Heroism Awards program. Please have your Chapter provide one or more of these awards and have reports completed by April 30, 2019.
The National SAR (NSSAR) 250th US Anniversary Committee is promoting a comprehensive program, and at the State Level, PASSAR will need a Committee Chairman to fill this position.
I would also like to see PASSAR Chapters have an Education Committee Chairman designated to promote educational outreach and promote more youth award activity at their community areas. Also, at the PASSAR State Level, an Education Committee Chairman could be desired to motivate and promote the National SAR Educational Outreach Programs.

PASSAR 2018 Fall Board of Management Meeting Highlights
The PASSAR 2018 Fall Board of Management Meeting was hosted by the Continental Congress Chapter and held at the Wyndham Garden York Hotel on Saturday, November 3, 2018. Compatriots who arrived on Friday, November 2 nd were treated to a historical presentation of the York Colonial Complex by Compatriot Thomas Gibson, York Historian, York College Ret., York Crier. The complex contains an exact reconstruction of the York Court House, site of the Second Continental Congress, and a restoration of a colonial village. That same evening at 1800, compatriots enjoyed cocktails and hor’dourves at the hotel accompanied by acoustic guitar played by 2nd VP and Chaplain David Felts. At 7:15 on Friday evening, a special budget meeting was hosted by Treasurer Donald Mengle and the Executive Committee to discuss budget items for the following year to lighten the full agenda planned for the next day. All PASSAR attendees were invited to attend the meeting if they wished. The Board of Management Meeting convened at 0900 on Saturday, November 3 with President Raynold Prusia in command. Thirty-two voting compatriots were present, as well as a guest, VicePresident General of the Atlantic Middle States District C. Louis Raborg, Jr. President Prusia announced that PASSAR membership is up ten percent this year. He also remarked that 28 compatriots recently attended the “Sons of the American Revolution Day” held October 15th at the Pennsylvania State Capitol which was recognized by both the PA House and Senate.
President Prusia also brought and displayed the 1940s reproduction of the fist PA Chapter Charter originally crafted and signed in 1893 in Pittsburgh. Assistant Secretary Russell Mills was duly appointed Secretary of PASSAR and officially installed by President Prusia. Secretary James Hall will now be working as the Assistant Secretary. Treasurer Mengle and Assistant Secretary Hall made a presentation on accessing the online PASSAR database at members.passar.org/members. Chapter Presidents and Treasurers are encouraged to log in and use this database to track dues payments and contact individual chapter members who have not paid. E-mail reminders can even be sent to chapter members directly through the database. Registrar Eric Troutman reported that he registered 75 members in the past quarter. There are now over 1,800 PASSAR compatriots listed in the NASSAR database. District 6 Deputy Donald M. Knaus received Board approval to propose a new NASSAR Medal to commemorate the Tiadaghton Elm and Fair Play Men. Medals and Awards Chairman J. Thomas Showler reported that Ron Miller was awarded the Silver Color Guard Medal by District 9 Deputy Gary Timmons and the George Washington Chapter. Compatriot Showler also proposed that a post graduate cultural exchange student from France named Julien Pierre Icher, who is writing a book on Lafayette’s Grand Tour of 24 states during 1824 through 1825, should receive a Silver Good Citizenship Medal for his work He would like for Julien to receive this commendation at the Annual Meeting to be held in Erie, PA on

May 4, 2019. Historian Ernest L. Sutton proposed that a contribution of $2,500 be made to construct a permanent PASSAR Historical Marker at Friendship Hill located on the Monongahela River in New Geneva honoring the Lafayette and Gallatin friendship as part of the Lafayette Trail promoting the Franco-American Friendship. Additionally, Compatriot Sutton recommended a contribution of $2,500 toward the completionof the Rochambeau Statue to be displayed at Commander’s Circle at Yorktown, Virginia Riverfront Park. The items will be voted on at a future Board of Management meeting. Chaplain Rev. Felts concluded the meeting with a benediction. Upon leaving the BOM, compatriots joined their wives after the conclusion of the Ladies Program which was again hosted by Compatriot Thomas Gibson. Lunch was served at the hotel restaurant accompanied by a raffle presented by the Ladies Auxiliary. Compatriot Raborg made an interesting presentation on antique currency and collectibles throughout American history. The weekend festivities came to a close with compatriots, wives, and guests enjoying a cake celebrating the 125th anniversary of PASSAR before heading home. General Arthur St. Clair Chapter SAR By Anthony Keefer
Members of the chapter took part in the “Festifall” event at Friendship Hill National Historic Site, Point Marion, PA on September 22. Friendship Hill was the country home of Albert Gallatin, an immigrant from Geneva. Gallatin served as Secretary of the Treasury under President Thomas Jefferson and as ambassador to France and to England. He served very briefly in the American Revolution. A table was set up and manned for two days by Joe Wingrove, Anthony Keefer, Jerry Clark, and Duane Myers. Pamphlets about SAR were made available and other information was provided to festival attendees. Much interest was show by a number of people and several signed up with the intention to pursue membership in SAR. Along with the SAR, information was available from several other lineage organizations. This was the first year that such organizations were invited to participate.

To the right is a picture from the Battle Days Memorial Service and wreath laying held at Point Pleasant, West Virginia. In the picture I am presenting the PASSAR wreath to the Army Honor Guard for placement. Serving as my escort is PASSAR Compatriot Robert Grumbling carrying the PA state Flag and Larry Perkins.
Frontier Patriots Announce Meeting
The quarterly meeting of the Frontier Patriots Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will be held at Noon, on Saturday, December 8th. at Hoss's Steak and Seafood Restaurant, 4308 Business Route 220, Bedford, PA.
The Frontier Patriots Chapter includes the counties of Blair, Bedford, Clearfield and Huntingdon. All current Frontier Patriots Chapter members are invited to attend, as well as any male who is interested in joining the Sons of the American Revolution. Any male who can prove lineal descent from a patriot who served during the Revolutionary War, or to an ancestor who gave aid to American colonists during the Revolution, is eligible for membership.
Some purposes and goals of the Sons of the American Revolution organization are patriotic, historical and educational, including the following:
* Preserving the records of Revolutionary War Patriots* Marking the locations of the Revolution: its events and its soldiers* Celebrating anniversaries of the Revolution

Flowers in the Forest
The Floo'ers o' the Forest (are a' wede away) is an old Scottish song that was brought about by the Scots losing their battle of Flodden (1513). It is a story of a young lass who lost someone she loved so dear. We, as brethren, take this time to remember those who have gone before us with our hopes and wishes that they, like their patriot ancestor, will not be forgotten.

Maclay Chapter Takes Tour of Priestley House By Fred Whitenight
William Maclay Chapter SAR and guests from DAR enjoyed a tour of the Priestly House in Northumberland following their meeting. Members, pictured from left, are Terrence Gill, Fred Whitenight, Michael McWilliams Jr., Michael McWilliams Sr. Luther Black, Pamela Sparta-Pararese, Larry Kerstetter, Kathleen VanSchuyler and Timothy Sparta-Pararese.
The French Cornflower of WWI The tradition of the poppy comes from the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae. The French translation, "Au Champs d'Honneur" ("On the Field of Honor") refers to "coquelicots" which are also poppies.
But the French "bleuet" (which you're calling a "cornflower," although "bluebell" might be a better translation) precedes the Commonwealth tradition of poppies -- it originally commemorated the production of blue-colored cloth by wounded soldiers who fought in the 1914-1918 war as they recovered in the famous Paris hospital Les Invalides, and now the bleuet symbol honors all veterans. The poppies inspired by "In Flanders Fields" thus honor the dead; "les bleuets" honor the wounded.

General Anthony Wayne Chapter Celebrate Armistice Day By Rev. David Felts
General Anthony Wayne Chapter, Pa Society Sons of the American Revolution Celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day. Wurtemberg Presbyterian Church, Ellwood City, Pa.Rev Dr Rob Guy, Pastor, Officiated and is also a member of General Anthony Wayne Chapter and serves on the Color Guard. General Anthony Wayne Combined Color Guard composed of P r e s i d e n t Ron Bruce, John Inman, John Carroll Commander. From the Pittsburgh Chapter, William McKim, Rennick Steele, John Coulter . Don Inman of GAW protrayed John Wesley's father Samuel and gave the Invocation. I was honored to be part of that, presenting the Homily on the SAR Cross.
On November 10, 2018 members of the George Washington Chapter participated in a grave marking ceremony for revolutionary War Patriot John Brownlee (1741-1811) at the South Buffalo Cemetery near Claysville, PA.
Feature to the right is a picture from the Battle Days Memorial Service and wreath laying held at Point Pleasant, West Virginia. In the picture Gary Timmons is presenting the PASSAR wreath to the Army Honor Guard for placement. Serving as my escort is PASSAR Compatriot Robert Grumbling carrying the PA state Flag and Larry Perkins.
