Membership

Interested in Becoming a Member? We extend a warm invitation to our “Exploring Membership” class and luncheon today from 11:15 a.m.-1:45 p.m. (immediately following the 10:15 a.m. worship service) in the Church House Parlor, located across the street from the Sanctuary building. This is an excellent opportunity to share your faith journey and learn more about the beliefs and ministry of our church. Lunch will be served and childcare will be provided, if requested in advance.

Adult Education

Compassionate Communication 4-Week Program Beginning April 29 Do you find yourself in situations of conflict, opposing viewpoints, and issues around re-spect and consideration? If so, join us for a 4–week program on Compassionate Communi-cation. We will explore: How to Communicate with “Difficult” People, How to Handle Conflict and Anger, How to Speak your Truth While Respecting Others, and other common challenges. Linda Mills, a member of BRPC has had extensive training in Compassionate Communication and will be facilitating the program.

Small Group Study—Mondays at 9:30 a.m.—5 weeks beginning May 5 Please join us on Monday, May 5 at 9:30 a.m. to explore and discuss 5 Love Languages of Children. This easy-to-read book discusses the need for children to feel loved in their par-ticular way to best succeed. If you and your children speak different love languages, your display of love might get lost in translation– affecting your child’s attitude, behavior and development. This is an opportunity for women to gather, share experiences and enjoy fel-lowship and refreshments. If you are interested in joining us for this 5-week study, please contact Jackie Obregon at [email protected]. Books (and childcare!) will be provided.

Friends of the Shelter

Friends of the Shelter—Next Meeting April 28 Friends of the Shelter, a support group for the Resource Center of Somerset, which minis-ters to victims of domestic violence, began as a mission of our church twenty-seven years ago. In that time, with fundraisers like author luncheons and festive Derby Day events, it has raised over $1,500,000 and is a shining example of BRPC’s recent emphasis on “local hands-on mission” as we furnish, paint, plant and tend to the physical needs of the shelter itself. To learn more, join us at our next meeting at 12:15 p.m., April 28 in the Church Par-lor. For more information, or to attend this year’s Derby Day celebration at Baltusrol Golf Club, call Joan Baer at 953-0739 or president, Mary Ellen Cahill, 672-3309.

Middle School Fellowship (Gr. 6-8) - Wed., April 30, 6-7:30 p.m. – Youth Center Come join this fun and vibrant group for a night of games, fellowship and a special project. We start the night with a sit-down pizza dinner, and then start making eye-catching signs to support the Senior High’s Mother’s Day Plant Sale/Workcamp Fundraiser (May 4 and 11). We are excited to use our time to get artsy and help this important mission. We welcome new faces!

Senior High Mother’s Day Plant Sale: A Workcamp Fundraiser Sunday, May 4 and Sunday, May 11 This year, the Senior High Fellowship and Youth & Young Adult Committee are hosting a Mother’s Day Plant Sale after both services on May 4 and 11. There will be 3 beautiful plant options perfect for adding a touch of spring to your home, or as a special gift to the mother in your life. Depending on the weather, the sale will be outside by the Oak Tree or in Westminster Hall. A special thank you to Michael and Amy Pellegrino for supplying us with such gorgeous plants. Come support the Senior High Workcamp!

Senior High Fellowship (Grades 9-12) - Tonight from 7-9 p.m.—Youth Center This topic night is going to be lots of fun! We will start with pizza and games and then begin a casual dialogue on today’s relationships...the good, the funny, the awkward, and sometimes ugly truths! Jenna will be leading this discussion using references to the “hook up culture” as defined by Boston College’s Professor Kerry Cronin. We will use her cri-tiques as the basis of our discussion and find out if we agree or disagree! Come join this time to connect with friends and relax before your week starts. We will also have Youth Sunday sign-ups—you choose your role! You don’t want to miss this one! Senior High Fellowship (Grades 9-12) - Saturday, May 3 Youth Sunday Rehearsal from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. We will meet in the BRPC Sanctuary at 11 a.m. for a full run-through of the two Youth Sun-day services. All students in the services are REQUIRED to be at this rehearsal. Please contact Jenna at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns. Seniors will stay until 1 p.m. and underclassmen are only required to be there until 12 p.m. There is also an opportunity to help set up for the Mother’s Day Plant Sale/Workcamp Fundraiser after this rehearsal.

Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Scholarships Offered Each year, the Youth and Young Adult Ministry Council offers scholarships for college jun-iors, seniors or graduate students. The scholarships are granted to aid education at an ac-credited college, university or seminary for individuals dedicated to working in “helping professions”, such as the pastorate, psychology, psychiatry, medicine, nursing, law and so-cial work. Church members and Somerset Hills residents are eligible and can obtain appli-cations in the Church House. Applications are due by May 15.

Coffee and Fellowship Time Please consider volunteering to host a Fellowship time by taking a few moments from your week to give of yourself in service to your church family. Fellowship is vital to the life of the church, and for some, Sunday is the only opportunity they have to connect. To volun-teer, please contact Nancy Sinni at 908-696-0317 or email at [email protected].

Opportunities to Give and Serve

Homeless Solutions “Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” –Luke 6:38

During difficult times there is nothing better to keep our minds off of our own troubles then to reach out and help someone in need. Homeless Solutions provides shelter for 25 home-less men, 10 homeless women, 19 families and 20 Safe Haven guests. The mission council is seeking volunteers to prepare and serve dinner to these families at the shelter. Volunteers need to arrive at the shelter by 4pm and dinner is served at 6 p.m. Clean up is done by the shelter residents. All menus are pre-planned or you may prepare your favorite specialty. One volunteer is also needed to shop for the groceries and all receipts are submitted to the church for reimbursement. If you feel called to this very special ministry please contact Ka-ren Cokewood at 908.221.9323. 2014 Dates: May 31, July 5, Sept. 6 and November 1.

Transition in Youth & Young Adult Ministries Jenna Meyers, our beloved Acting Director of Youth & Young Adults, will soon be leaving this post to start her graduate nursing studies at Columbia University. Many of you know Jenna from her lifelong membership in our church. It has been a true gift to see her shine in a staff leadership position this past year and our Youth Programs have thrived under her car-ing watch. Jenna is now being called to pursue her dream to become a nurse. Her school-ing starts in June, with her last day in the office on May 21. We are filled with happiness for her as she starts this next phase of her life journey. Please pray for Jenna and for all BRPC youth & young adults and our faithful Youth Advisors in this time of transition. We are blessed with a healthy foundation! The Youth & Young Adult Committee will be hosting a reception for Jenna on Sunday, May 18 immediately following the 10:15 a.m. Worship ser-vice in Westminster Hall. Please come and join together in fellowship to help celebrate Jen-na’s ministry and offer our heartfelt thanks for her many gifts and talents, as well as encour-agement for what lays ahead at grad school.
