Thank you to everyone who has attended an event (or perhaps a few) this week as we have opened up our school for a wide range of visitors; family members and special friends from far and wide. It is not surprising to hear positive comments from those who note the positive tone of the school, the outstanding calibre of our teachers, the cohesive and dedicated nature of the parents group and the quality of our students. This was demonstrated in so many ways at Tuesday’s Arts Showcase and also noted by prospective parents attending daily tours as well commented on at last night’s School Information Night. ARTS SHOWCASE Tuesday night’s Arts Showcase was an extremely successful evening, with outstanding student work on display both in the form of Art items and Musical performances presented on the night. Last week I attended a Regional Network Conference where one of my well respected colleagues presented a passionate and informative speech about the benefits of The Artsin the school curriculum. All of this gave me cause to think and celebrate the wonderful achievements of our students and the importance of The Arts in education. Too often as a nation and as a community we get hung up on data and data driven programs to measure success. NAPLAN and My School are prime examples of this. Interestingly, our school compares favourably in both these measures and I believe that, good teaching, community support and an excellent Arts Education Program combine to play a big part in this success. Music and Art inspire creativity and abstract thinking, which are two very important skills that support Literacy and Numeracy. They allow for individual thinking, expression and creativity which build self-esteem and confidence. They are also extremely enjoyable and give students another reason to love school. It is for this reason that I think that Blackburn Lake PS has got a winning formula that develops the whole child and encourages our students to develop on a number of levels preparing them for success in an ever changing world. Richard Gill, the Music Director at the Victorian Opera, states that “…it is through participation in arts subjects that the mind, imagination, spirit and soul of a child are stimulated. Through this stimulation comes a bonus in all other areas of learning.” Congratulations to our school staff, in particular Johanna McPhail and Pia Chadwick (Art), and Jo Myers (Music) and Jane Stamp (Choir) for setting the standard for other music teachers and instrumentalists, and all students and parents at Blackburn Lake. Tuesday night was certainly a celebration of the Arts, with the wide array of talent to once again be congratulated. JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message This week has been a time of sharing, celebrating and marvelling at the happy nature of our students and witnessing the results of their hard work and persistence at school.

This was demonstrated in so many ways at Tuesday’s Arts Showcase and also noted by prospective parents attending daily tours – as well commented on at last night’s School Information Night.

ARTS SHOWCASE Tuesday night’s Arts Showcase was an extremely successful evening, with outstanding student work on display – both in the form of Art items and Musical performances presented on the night. Last week I attended a Regional Network Conference where one of my well respected colleagues presented a passionate and informative speech about the benefits of ‘The Arts’ in the school curriculum.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 28 CLASSROOMS

Families will tonight receive a “passport” to travel “Around the World in 28 Classrooms”. This theme

acknowledges Victoria as a dynamic, multicultural community where more than 200 languages are spoken and over 40 per cent of the population has at least one parent who was born overseas. As travel, technology and a global economy bring distant nations closer together than ever before, the benefits for children engaged in learning a language and understanding other cultures is enormous. The self-guided tour begins at 6:30pm, with the challenge to visit as many of the rooms that you can - getting a stamp in your passport for each room visit before the night concludes at 8pm. If you didn’t get the opportunity to visit the Art Show (above) on Tuesday night, you will get another chance tonight. Additionally, you may consider purchasing “dinner” from the Parents Association ‘Sausage Sizzle’ as a part of tonight’s travels. MID-YEAR REPORTS Teachers have now commenced writing all student’s Mid-Year Reports, which will be issued to parents on Friday 21st June 2013. These Reports will present parents with an up to date picture on their children’s performance at school, both socially and academically. Reports take several hours per student to complete and I would like to thank teachers for their commitment to work late at night and on the weekends. Monday’s Curriculum Day was an opportunity for staff to finalise Assessment and Reporting requirements, as well as align this to the new AusVELS National Curriculum. We will be conducting formal Parent/Teacher Interviews at the end of this term – 25th and 26th June - to discuss the Mid-Year Reports and plan for second semester. To summarize our ‘Reporting to Parents’ process: Term 1 – ‘Getting to Know You’ Parent/Teacher Interviews Term 2 – Mid-year Written Report / Progress Parent/Teacher Interview Term 4 – End-of-Year Written Report Of course, as always, if you have particular concerns regarding your child’s progress, an appointment can be made with your child’s teacher at any time by contacting the Office, or emailing your child’s teacher directly. WORKING BEE Congratulations to the Rushby family – winners of the Hoyts Raffle draw at Saturday morning’s Working Bee. A small group of volunteers braved the cold and wet, to move mulch and tidy garden beds. Despite the poor weather, those in attendance achieved many tasks and enjoyed working together - many thanks to members of the Bailey, Clarkson, Collins, Conman, Taylor and Treacy families, as well as the assistance of Gay Burnett. I hope to see you at tomorrow’s Whole School Assembly @ 3pm, where we will once again enjoy the 5/6s “Stick and Chair” item (performed at the Arts Showcase), acknowledge of our ‘Students of the Week’ and give prizes to two lucky passport holders (make sure you hand in your passport tonight into the Office before leaving) to be drawn at Assembly. As always, we welcome special friends and visitors to join us.

CONGRATULATIONS & BEST WISHES Congratulations to our teacher Kerryn Straughan and her husband Jamie for the delivery of a lovely baby girl named Caitlin Mel Smith who was born this week. Mum and daughter are both doing well.

Regards, Jason Walker - Principal [email protected]

Are you ‘As Fit as a Fifth Grader’? Last Friday, Blackburn Lake held its annual cross country event where our children ran a combination of distances ranging from 1000 meters (1km) to 3000 meters (3km). Your school PA would like to challenge you to do the same. Can you walk or

run the same distance your child completed last Friday? Are you ‘As Fit as a Fifth Grader’?

The fitness challenge will be held on Tuesday 4th June 2013, as part of an extended Morning Movers circuit. Starting gun for all distances is 8.20am.

You can choose to run (or walk) any of the four distances completed by our children last Friday – specifically 1000m, 1500m, 2000m or 3000m.

Why not pick the distance that your child completed?

Perhaps do a distance you’re comfortable with.

Either way, we challenge you to join your children in morning movers on the 4th and keep moving.

House points will be awarded to parents completing the challenge!!! For those of you with a competitive edge, the time to beat has been set by the fastest child across each distance and will be announced during assembly on Friday afternoon and again on the morning of the 6th. So dust off your runners, start training and get your own dots (and house points) during Morning Movers on Tuesday 4th June. To express your interest in participating, please email Wendy at [email protected]. $2 to enter. ______________________________________________________________________________________________

Storyline: Twins, William and Elizabeth, find passports in a secret library in which they are directed to sign their names to travel back in time. They find themselves in England, in the year 1415, invisible to all except young Hugh Calthorpe, squire to the great knight, Sir Thomas Erpingham. They soon find themselves witnessing history at first hand as they join King Henry V and his mighty army of knights and English archers, who cross the English Channel to France, where they take the town of Harfleur by seige. The twins are immersed in the events of medieval warfare, and go on to witness the great battle of Agincourt. Prattle House 1415 is a time travel adventure for children up to the age of 99, to immerse themselves in the wonders of the past and enjoy history.
