THINGS AS THEY ARE,WERE AND ARE TO COME
Te Prophecy Enigma SolvedCopyright 2013 Anthony E. Larson
Prophecy in the scriptures is full of peculiar imagesso peculiar in fact as to
seem like theyve been preserved in some sort of secret code. What if these
mysterious images are simply references to remarkable things observed in
the heavens in ancient times? Cosmology, then, would become the key that
unlocks the code of prophecy.
Decoding the Prophets Symbolism
You may have heard o the Bible Code. Tis is not about that. In act,
the Bible Code, as portrayed in Christian and pop literature, is a allacy.
Tis essay is about a very real code, though it was never meant to
be such. It happened quite by accident. You are probably very aware
o it, though youve probably never thought o it as a code.
Tis is about the rophets Code: the vocabulary or lexicon used
by the prophets that I call the language o the prophets. It is char-acterized by the odd and oen bizarre imagery ound everywhere in
scripture, including latter-day revelation. Examples o this imagery are
such things as wheels, candlesticks, monsters or beasts, stars, trumpets
and reerences to arcane ideas such as re rom heaven, the heavens
reeling to and ro, the moon turning to blood, Alpha and Omega, the
Son o Man and so orth.
So we must ask: Why the use o such symbolic or coded language?
Why a Prophets Code? Why mystiy any o the gospel? Why not
simply speak plainly so all can understand?
I maintain that the prophets imagery was plain language as it was
rst used and understood. From the days o Adam until the demise

o the Savior and his Apostles, it was a common denominator in all
ancient cultures, easily comprehended by people who could neither
read nor write. But because the means to understand that language
has since been systematically erased or expunged rom our cultureover time, it has become an enigma rather than a teaching tool.
Terein lies a remarkable story.
Codes and keys: deciphering a lost language
A code can be simple or complex. A game o language called ig
atin is an example o a simple code. o use it or understand it, you
must have this key: Move the rst letter or consonant o each wordto the end o that word, and then add an a (pronounced ay). Tus,
the word store becomes orestay, or the word happy becomes
appyhay. And unless bystanders can gure out the keythat is, de-
cipher the codethey will not understand what is said by those who
do have the key.
So the codes key becomes the solution to the puzzle.
For the sake o clarity, heres a simple encoded or encrypted textthat is sometimes used to bae the uninitiated.
How are you? Everything here is ne. Let everyone know that I
am well. lease ease their concerns.
On the ace o it, this message seems to indicate that the writer is
in no danger and there is no cause or alarm. But once you decipher
the code, using the key, it conveys an entirely dierent message.
ave you detected the key? Can you decipher the message? I so,you know the message is actually a cry or helpliterally! By taking
only the rst letter o each sentence and putting it in the same order
it appeared in the original note, we get the word HELP.
O course, coded messages are typically more complex than that.
Some messages are obviously a code because the symbols used areunamiliar and cryptic, or the text appears scrambled. Others appear
to be legitimate texts, like our little example, because they can be readquite easily. In that case, it isnt even obvious that it is an encodedmessage at all, as is the case with the rophets Code.

In every case, one must have the keysometimes a combination
o keysto decipher a code. Tus, its sae to say that where codes are
concerned, the key unlocks the message.
Coded language
Deciphering an unknown language, such as the Prophets Code, is
much like decoding an encrypted message.
A good example o this is the Mayan codices. Te anthropologists
and linguists who are working to decipher the Mayan hieroglyphs
have literally been deciphering a code, plain and simple. Te very
word or their writing indicates that: codices.Te Mayans didnt intend their writing system to be a code. In act,
or them it was just the opposite. It was their way o recording and
presenting their cultural, traditional and religious belies. All Mayans
could easily read it.
It is the passage o time and the inevitable orgetting that comes
with it that makes a once-amiliar writing or teaching system into a
mystery, a code. For them, it was commonplace; or us, its an enigma.Te prophets, the apostles and the Savior didnt invent the Prophets
Code. Tey werent trying to hide anything. Instead, they were using
a well-established, time-honored system o sacred metaphors and
symbols rom their contemporary cultures to teach the gospel.
Confrmation o the key
Once the proper key is applied to its code, the message it translatesbecomes clear. Te moment that happens, its obvious to all concerned
that the applied key is the correct one. Tus, the keys ability to ully
interpret or translate a message conrms its validity. Put plainly, it is
its own proo.
Nowhere is all this truer than in our attempt to decode the prophets
message. And it also serves to point out the shortcomings in fawed
interpretations so prevalent in Christianity today. When the key is
applied
or keys in this case
the message can be read in its entirety, word or word. Tere are no garbled or incomprehensible segments
and there is no need to take bits and pieces out o context to build an
interpretation, as do all our Christian cousins.

The long-lost key
So, what is the key to the rophets Code? Cosmologythe events
and images projected on Earths ancient heavens by electried plasmas
and nearby planetary orbs generating efects and phenomena seenand experienced by all mankind. Tese were recorded in stone, art,
ritual and tradition by the ancients, which then gave rise to the major
themes or motis o all cultures.
Tose themes, called metaphors or motis and their graphic coun-
terparts, the icons or images, became the archetypes or all sacred
expression in cultures worldwide. Tese were handed down rom
generation to generation, careully and aithully preserved as theirsacred history.
How history became a code
An explanation o how plain language became a code can be ound,
o all places, in the vision o Nephi, the one I call Te istory es-
son. (1 Nephi 13.)
e is shown by an angel that the Gospel
the words o a bookwould rst be corrupted by the Gentiles and then urther deled by
that great and abominable church.
When we look at secular or proane history, we see just what Nephi
described. First the Catholic Church rejected many texts that may have
contained authentic teachings o the Savior and the apostles. Its also
apparent rom textual comparison that there were many alterations
and changes made by these Gentiles.ence, modern Christianity is based almost entirely on doctrine
rom only a ew texts the Catholic athers preerred. Actually, its quite
likely that they chose poorly in some cases because they were not
guided by revelation, as were the Apostles. Tese ew canonical texts
are thought to contain all thats needed to be a true disciple.
Later, in the Reormation, many splinter groups broke of rom
the Catholic. Tis was the rotestant movement that saw the advento utherans, Calvinists and the Church o ngland, among others.
Like their Catholic predecessors, none o the Protestant churches
claimed revelation. Hence, they embraced the same canon that the

Catholics had settled upon centuries earlier, though they interpreted
it somewhat dierently.
At about the same time, one group denounced ormal religion al-
together. Tey embraced the doctrines o skepticism, rationalism andempiricism. Tey rejected both the sacred canon and the teachings
o Christianity as myths, the product o irrational, oolish minds.
But they embraced the Catholic educational system, the university
with all its liturgical trappings and degrees o indoctrinationonce
called priesthood. Tese accouterments include the robes onceworn in sacred settings, the cap and gown used in commencement
exercises
what Nibley amously called the robes o alse priesthood.Tey created an alternate creation story, their own version o Gen-
esis, which they later called the Big Bang. Tey ashioned their own
apostles: yell, utton, Darwin, Newton and later, instein.
Tis was the Science Church, though it reused to be equated with
normative religion, casting itsel as the antithesis o religion. And thatis the key: It is a religion, complete with its own dogma and hierarchy.
Nephi saw it or what it was and correctly reerred to it as a church. He called it the great and abominable churchgreat because it in-
ltrated all cultures the world over, abominable because its doctrine
denied Christ and his Gospel.
The result
As a consequence o these two major infuences on Christianity, as
predicted by Nephi, we can come to only one conclusion: Te most
common cultural and religious motis o antiquity are unknown and
unrecognized in our day and age or what they truly represent. We
either misinterpret them, or we are blind to them, though they sur-
round us. I we recognize them at all, we label them mysteries and
then dismiss them as inexplicable. Tey exist in our cultural traditions
and customseven our languageand they are especially prevalent
in our religions.
Te result: What was once a clear and unmistakable system o re-lated ideas is now a mystery, a conundrum, a secret and impenetrable
code. According to secular and sectarian authorities, they are nothingmore than myth, legend, airy tales or paganism, having virtu-

ally nothing to do with the real world or the Gospel o Jesus Christ.
So too the icons that were meant to recall and explain the imagery
o all ancient culture and tradition.
