What’s Happening Around Town?

Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry Opens New Facility

Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, Inc. has a new home! The local grassroots non-profit hosted a ribbon-cutting on August 14th at the recently renovated facility located at 2050 Lambs Road. The pantry started food distributions at the location on Saturday, August 1. This new building allows Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry to almost dou-ble its size for distribution, office, and storage as well as to provide the op-portunity to serve those in need better through a distribution model called “Client Choice.”

The new building, as well as the distri-bution model, will allow Loaves & Fish-es Food Pantry to continue for decades to come to carry on its Mission: To give food with kindness and compassion to those seeking assistance while provid-ing an opportunity for volunteers to serve their neighbors in Charlottesville and surrounding communities.

“Client Choice” is a food distribu-tion model where the clients get to select which food items they actually acquire at the Pantry. With this new space, Loaves & Fishes Food Pan-try is transitioning into being one of the first Client Choice models in the Charlottesville area. Advantages of the Client Choice model include less wast-ed food, clients having a say in what food items they receive, and a more interactive process between volunteers and clients. Initial feedback from cli-ents receiving food through the Client Choice model has been overwhelming-ly positive.

The purchase of the building was made possible by a $500,000 seed gift from Richard & Julia Nunley, Caro-line Nunley Satira, and John Nunley; $125,000 of the seed gift is contingent upon the receipt of matching funds from other donors. Through the fam-

ily’s ownership of Better Living Build-ing Supply, a generous gift of building materials was added to their overall gift. The Nunley Family members cut the ribbon on the new facility.

In addition to the Nunley Family, the Perry Foundation has supplied an additional $105,000 to help with the purchase and renovations; the Perry grants are also contingent upon the receipt of matching funds from other donors. In December 2014, the pantry won a $20,000 grant from Walmart to improve infrastructure, which will help with the renovations.

The original goal for the capital campaign to cover the purchase and renovation was set at $1.2 million and the goal has not yet been met. For more information on giving to the Build To-day, Feed Tomorrow campaign please visit: http://cvilleloavesandfishes.org

Additional information on volun-teering, donating, or receiving food can be obtained by contacting Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry through its website (noted above) or by calling the Pantry at (434) 996-7868.

Charlottesville’s Synagogue Supports Aging Population

Congregation Beth Israel (CBI) in Charlottesville is pleased to announce Senior Connections, a new initiative intended to address the communal and spiritual needs of the increasingly large aging population in Central Virginia. The primary goal of Senior Connec-tions, which is funded by the Eitelberg Fund of the United Jewish Fund of Charlottesville (UJFC) and run by CBI, “is to connect with and support our Jewish elders,” says Latifa Kropf, Senior Connections Coordinator.

“As this is a new endeavor, we are not sure of the form that it will take, but we are sure that our seniors are valuable

members of our family,” explains Kropf, who says she looks forward to meeting with seniors, family members, and care-givers to learn from them how the pro-gram can assist in meeting their social, religious, spiritual, and personal needs. Kropf is an author and teacher of Jew-ish culture who has been leading work-shops on Jewish Sacred Dance around the country for over 30 years.

CBI is affiliated with the Union of Reform Judaism and serves over 370 member households with diverse reli-gious, social, and cultural backgrounds. CBI offers both Reform and Conserva-tive Worship services while supporting spiritual growth, social justice, char-itable giving, and lifelong learning. Founded in 1882, it is one of the older Jewish communities in Virginia. The synagogue itself is located at 301 East Jefferson Street in Charlottesville.

For more information about Senior Connections, contact Latifa Kropf, Se-nior Connections Coordinator at (434) 974-7016 or [email protected].

BGF Announces Project Updates

Charlottesville-based nonprofit Building Goodness Foundation (BGF) is pleased to announce the completion of two projects and the launch of a third. BGF volunteers and staff recent-ly completed construction on a new secondary school in Haiti in partner-ship with the Robert Ford Haitian Or-phanage & School Foundation, as well as an environmental education center in Costa Rica, a partnership with Osa Conservation.

With support from Charlottes-ville-based Robert Ford Haitian Or-phanage & School Foundation, BGF coordinated the construction of a new secondary school in Grison-Garde, lo-cated in northern Haiti. Since the 2010 earthquake, enrollment in the second-

ary school swelled to over 700 stu-dents, and classrooms designed for 30 students were holding more than 50. Despite this, the Robert Ford School boasts an 80 percent elementary and secondary completion rate and 90 per-cent literacy rate. With BGF’s addition of an expanded secondary school, the campus will be better able to serve and educate a larger number of Haitian youth. To learn more, visit: http://bit.ly/maranathaschool.

In Costa Rica, BGF partnered with Osa Conservation and the Blue Moon Fund to build a center for education, training, and research in agro-ecology, conservation, and natural sciences.

The space will be used for local, re-gional, and international stakeholders ranging from local school children to international research institutions. This “green classroom” will be a cen-ter for education in biodiversity con-servation and sustainable agriculture, ultimately fostering hands-on envi-ronmental education opportunities and development of community best practices in the Osa Peninsula. To learn more, visit: http://bit.ly/OsaBGF.

Beginning in September, BGF will send construction volunteers to work with G.O.A.L.S. (Global Outreach and Love of Soccer) Haiti to build a new community center in the remote vil-lage of Destra, Haiti. Here, G.O.A.L.S. works with community members to engage youth in service to advance health, environmental, and educa-tional initiatives. A community of 800 families, Destra lacks a school, a health clinic, and a place of worship, and the average family lives on $1.50 per day. The new community center will serve as a multi-purpose building for Des-tra, housing afterschool tutoring, teen programs, literacy classes, and health education. The building can also func-tion as a medical clinic and host com-

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Ad-ministration, more than 35 million Americans move each year. And, al-though most movers are

reputable companies, the number of complaints is on the rise. Moving into a new home is an exciting event, but the reality is that it’s often stressful for the entire family. That is why the U.S. Government has partnered with the moving industry and various consum-er groups to help educate the public in an effort to keep them from being taken advantage of by dishonest mov-ers. Because the process can be rather stressful and overwhelming, you don’t want to procrastinate by waiting until the last minute to start planning. Do-ing so can lead to poorly packed boxes, unorganized preparation and unnec-essary chaos. If you have a big move coming up, don’t despair. With some advanced planning and good packing advice, you can make the process less stressful and more enjoyable.

Let the Professionals Handle the Move

If you have never hired a profession-al moving company before, Eddie Giles,

the proprietor of Professional Movers Incorporated (www.professionalmov-ersofcharlottesville.com), suggests you begin the search by checking your local phone book. Furthermore, this task can also be accomplished by doing a Google search on the Internet for local moving companies within your locale. According to Giles, some movers will have customers complete an online estimate sheet in order to provide an estimated cost and time. However, if you are moving out of the state, they will give you an estimated weight as well, he adds. Giles doesn’t believe that this is the best practice for providing an accurate estimate. Instead, he sug-gests that you have the mover come to your current residence and give you a visual estimate. In his opinion, a visu-al estimate eliminates any frustrations

down the road, especially when the customer receives the final bill that exceeds the initial estimated quote. Furthermore, Giles says be prepared for “sticker shock” because prices have changed. If your last move was say 20 years ago, be prepared to pay a much higher premium today. “I’m going to tell you what you don’t want to hear, not what you want to hear,” says Giles. “I’d rather let you know up front what to expect cost wise, rather than quote something ridiculously low because, at the end of the day, doing so makes me untrustworthy.”

Charlottesville has a lot of moving companies popping up constantly, providing customers with many choic-es and options. But keep in mind, “not all movers are the same,” adds Giles. According to Giles, some of these com-

panies do not have trucks, they don’t have licenses, they don’t carry insur-ance, they don’t have workers’ compen-sation insurance, and they don’t have a full-time staff. His advice, “Buyers be-ware when you are looking for a mov-er.” When doing your due diligence on a mover, you want to start with the Better Business Bureau. Although many movers are not members, using this avenue for research can help when gathering information regarding cus-tomer complaints. In addition, you can go to www.protectyourmove.com and pull up any mover in the United States. If they are not registered with this web-site, then it’s questionable because all moving companies are supposed to be registered and in their database, ac-cording to Giles. You can provide the company’s name, their Department of Transportation number (DOT) or their Motor Carrier number, and their information should instantly pull up, giving you some idea about the com-pany. Giles says that this is particularly important to do if you are moving out of state.

You Pack They Haul If you have decided to go with a

cost is a looming factor, you could save money by packing yourself and letting the moving company haul everything away. If you do pack yourself, it is very important that you label your boxes: what’s in your boxes, where they need to go in the house, and into what rooms. However, with furniture you don’t necessarily need to label it, says Giles, but once the movers bring it into the house you can show them the designated location. To further make this process run smoothly, Giles likes to visit the new home location when possible (which many moving compa-nies don’t do) because it allows him the opportunity to assess any unfore-seen problems before the actual move day. “If I have any questions about driveways, or trees hanging down or the stairways, or questionable pieces of furniture not fitting, I can decide what method we need to use to get it into the house,” he says.

Although packing yourself can help with the cost, keep in mind that many movers will tell you that they are not responsible

for damages, according to Giles. For example, if you hear something rat-tling inside, that means the box is not properly packed and the mover should not take it. However, if they do move the box, and you notice that the box is flattened, that means that the movers possibly sat something on top of the box and damaged the items. In this instance, Giles believes that the mover should bear some responsibility for the damages. Although you packed it, they stacked it wrong. Properly labeling and packing the contents within the boxes is very important because it helps the movers strategically stack and place items on the truck.

According to Student Services Mov-ing & Storage Co.’s website, if you have oversized furniture and you are moving into an apartment, there is a possibili-ty that it won’t fit. By measuring your

items and the dimensions of your new location, for example, elevators, stair-ways, door jams, and corners you can avoid surprises and eliminate unnec-essary stress on move-in day. Student Services also suggests that you empty your refrigerator, defrost your freezer and disconnect your washer and dry-er. Student Services advises that if you are packing your items, you should use an excessive amount of paper on your fragile possessions. In addition, Stu-dent Services believes in making use of all available space, which is why they advise packing linens and clothes in drawers, chests, and trunks, and loose items in trashcans.

Whether you plan to go with a pro-fessional moving company, or han-dle the move yourself, Bob Hughes, of Nest Realty (www.nestrealty.com), believes that it’s a good idea to begin planning four to five months out. Do-ing so allows the homeowner time to de-clutter, and get rid of items that

they no longer need or want anymore. It can also help the homeowners’ wallet because they won’t have the extra cost of hauling items to their new location only to later trash them.

Giles also wants homeowners to keep in mind that going with the cheapest price might not work in their favor. For example, according to Giles, if you hire a mover that doesn’t have workers’ com-pensation insurance, and the employ-ee gets hurt inside your home or falls down the steps on your property, then the consequences could mean a big law-suit. Since the employee doesn’t have workers’ compensation insurance, and he wants to get paid for his injury, he will most likely sue your homeowners insurance, or even worse, you. So taking the risk of hiring an uninsured moving company could prove to be a very ex-pensive consequence later.

Storage FacilitiesIf you have items in a storage facil-

ity, there is an additional charge. “Ex-tra stop, extra pickup, extra drop off,” means an added charge, says Giles. It is important to let the mover know during the initial assessment because the mover needs to know what’s in-volved, what size storage unit, where it’s located, etc. All this factors into the final estimate or cost of your move. For example, if you are moving items out of a home and into a storage unit because you have sold your current home and are waiting to close on an-other, you just can’t take those items to storage and set them in place. It’s like putting a puzzle together, he says. For instance, when Charlottesville Pro-fessional Movers put items in storage, the way it comes off the truck is the way it goes back on—in reverse. If the customer wants to save money, having that storage unit packed correctly ini-tially could save them both time and money in the long run. In addition, the homes levels will determine the final cost as well. A homeowner moving into a one level home can expect a different cost than someone moving into a two or three level home with a basement.

Furthermore, if the storage unit was not professionally stacked and packed by his company, Giles says that he likes to visit the storage unit, if possible. Nor-mally, he would not look at units that are 5 x 10 because you can only fit so much into them. However, if his cus-tomer has a 10 x 20 or 10 x 30 storage unit, he typically makes the trip to the unit, because in his experience, often times people get larger storage units to accommodate what they thought was a lot. But, what he has discovered is that many of these units are not filled to ca-pacity. By making this trip, it usually means a great savings for his customers.

Making Sure Your Valuables Are Covered

If you are still not sure whether you want to hire a professional licensed moving company, or you just can’t af-ford one, if you have a homeowner’s policy, some of your valuables might be covered during a move, according to John Egan, editor-in-chief at Spare Foot, the country’s largest marketplace for finding and booking self-storage. Even if you lack homeowner’s insurance, or

your current policy doesn’t cover your property while in transit, during a state-to-state move you should be covered, he said. Under federal law, a registered moving company must offer two types of liability coverage: released value pro-tection and full value protection. Re-leased value coverage reimburses up to 60 cents per pound and comes at no ad-ditional cost to consumers. On the oth-er hand, full value coverage comes at an extra cost and covers about one percent of the value of your belongings. Egan suggests that you understand what’s covered and what’s not before you allow the moving company to load a single box into a truck.

In addition, the Federal Motor Car-rier Safety Administration, which regu-lates interstate movers, warns consum-ers against signing a delivery receipt for household goods if they “spot language about releasing the company or its part-ners from any liability.” Furthermore, you should keep valuables like “cash, credit cards, coin collections, jewelry, irreplaceable photographs and critical documents like birth certificates and passports” with you, according to Egan. Hughes says that he would not let mov-ers handle anything that is confiden-tial, personal and important. However, things like utility bills, receipts and oth-er non sensitive items can be handled by the mover, but “any personal finan-cial documents should stay with you.” Although some of these items can be replaced with just a phone call, keeping them with you saves the added hassle.

It’s no mystery that a well planned and organized move will make your life so much easier. And for many, hiring a professional moving company is the perfect solution for a stress free tran-sition. However, for many consumers hiring professionals is just not the most economical or cost effective solu-tion, which is why you should turn to organizations like the American Mov-ing & Storage Association, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Admin-istration to gather helpful moving tips that can potentially save you money and valuable time. Whatever route you decide to take, don’t let your move in day have you pulling out your hair. n

If Virginia is for lovers, Mad-ison is for connoisseurs of small charming towns, and Madison’s Taste of the Mountains street fes-tival is their favorite event of the summer. Let’s get specific: Taste has the Fire

Department’s famous steak sandwich-es, once-a-year concoctions so good some people order twice. It has the Marching Mountaineers, the Madison High School Band all fired up because they’re getting steak sandwiches too. It has living history, antique cars, pony rides and a wine tasting tent. Most impressive of all, it has 170 booths stocked by skilled crafters from across the country. The 23rd annual Taste of

the Mountains celebration of histo-ry and heritage takes place on Main Street, Saturday, September 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. – and it’s free.

HeritageMadison County has a long mem-

ory. In the 18th century it attracted German, English and Scots/Irish fami-lies who have descendants there today. In 1792 it received its county charter, taking its name from a family with land along the Rapidan River – the same family that had produced James Madison, Jr., at the time a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and destined to be elected president

in 1808. In 1929 President Herbert Hoover purchased 164 acres along the upper Rapidan in what is now Shenan-doah National Park and established Camp Hoover, using it as a retreat throughout his presidency. In 1993 the Madison Chamber of Commerce established Taste of Mountains as a “heritage festival” celebrating 18th and 19th century Blue Ridge Mountain culture. Most vendors that first year were local – but the word got around.

Come to Madison County today and you’ll admire historic structures like the county library (1852), Inn at Meander (early 18th century) Eagle House (late 18th century), and Pied-mont Episcopal Church (1832-1834). No less than 66 buildings are in the na-tionally listed historic district. Down on Main Street the Madison County Court House is a handsome, two-story brick structure erected in 1828, with an open, ground floor arcade, Tus-can-style entablature, a gable roof, and an octagonal domed cupola. Its Feder-al brick work has been called some of the finest in America.

FestivalVisitors this year will be greeted by

an official Virginia LOVEwork, a 16 foot wide and 7 foot high sculpture spelling out the word LOVE and carry-ing the state message that “Love is at

ing. Kids can watch a magic show and ride ponies. Over on the music stage, the Marching Mountaineers will enter-tain with pep tunes and movie favor-ites, Culpeper’s David Leckie Gilmore will bring the blues, rock and Ameri-cana, and Outlaw Whiskey will have the soulful Southern rock. Warrenton singer-songwriter Leon Rector will sing his own tunes.

Madison’s own Jessica Weaver is sure to do “Letting Go,” the single she re-corded after winning a singing contest on Katie Couric’s popular TV show. The boys in Madison County’s own Dark Hollow Bluegrass Band will prove their boast of being the best dressed band in the area, and Bernie Dodd will play the “classic rock n’ roll & country” he’s been perfecting for over 20 years.

Hungry festivalgoers can try Main Street restaurants including Madison Inn, Mountaineer Café, and Pie in the Sky, or hit the food carts of Bavarian Chef, Pig N Steak, The Little Country Store in Etlan, Kites Ham, and Valen-tines Country Bakery. Churches and civic organizations will fill the air as well, with fried fish, sausages, home-made ice cream and funnel cakes. Mad-ison’s DuCard and Early Mountain vineyards will sell wine by the glass or for a $10 tasting fee with a souvenir glass. Non-drinkers can visit the Gray Ghost Beverage booth for iced coffee, iced tea, frappes and craft sodas.

HomeJim Koontz settled in Madison 19

years ago, when he bought Miss Pat-tie’s, an antique store on Main Street. Known for its Victorian furniture and linens and “the largest collection of tea-pots in the state,” the shop is named af-ter a former resident, a popular school-teacher. “The kids used to say, ‘Let’s go to Miss Pattie’s house,’” Koontz says. “Nowadays he lives upstairs himself, and it’s no wonder – “I can look out and see the mountains.” Koontz hails from German immigrants who came here from Spotsylvania County. So do many of his customers. “They come back to visit graveyards and soak up history. I have people quite frequently come in here from as far west as Cal-ifornia and Oregon that had people that originally settled in Virginia.”

REALTOR® Bud Kreh has called the county home since 1967, and priz-es its proximity to Shenandoah Na-tional Park, as well as Early Mountain and Prince Michel wineries and Graves Mountain Lodge, which have festivals and events throughout the year. “It’s a nice country place to grow up in,” he says. “The school system’s been great. This area has a lot to offer for people looking for a relaxed lifestyle.” What’s more, he believes, Madison’s slow growth philosophy ensures that “we’ll be able to maintain a way of life that people have been used to for years and years here.”

Taste of the Mountains offers free parking at Madison High School and at the County Fair Grounds, with shut-tle buses running from both sites. In nearby Hoover Ridge Park the Madison County Farmer’s Market, 8:00 a.m. to noon, will have spectacular views and a safe play space for kids, plus local pro-duce, baked goods, specialty meats and more. Summer weather never stopped country people from throwing a par-ty: Taste of the Mountains is a rain or shine affair. n

Madison 411Situated between Greene and Culpeper Counties, Madison County offers beautiful scenery and a multitude of outdoor activi-ties such as hiking, camping and fishing. In addition, residents who want variety can take advan-tage of easy access to the em-ployment, shopping, educational, recreational and cultural benefits of Charlottesville, Fredericksburg and DC.

Buyers in all ages and price ranges seek out the peace and quiet that Madison County offers. While a few people live in the town of Madison, most live in the surrounding rural areas on lot sizes ranging from three acres to very large farms. Many are retired, but the area is also attractive to first timers who want more privacy and property, to people who work out of their homes some or all of the time, and to those who grow crops or have cattle and horses.

This is a great time to buy a home or land there as prices are still reasonable and interest rates very low, which means everyone from first timers on up can find a great deal. And if they are like their neighbors, they can expect to be a happy and enjoy their stay for a very long time.
