House Spirit

Our newsletter cover is a demonstration of Glenwood High School house spirit. Our House Captains under the guidance of Mr Kiel Moore, passionately promote house spirit, as demonstrated through the “House Games” they conduct each week. This endeavour has been pivotal in cultivating a strong sense of school pride and culture. Achievement, excellence, satisfaction and inclusion are proud hallmarks of being an active house member and our House captains support students by creating a community within a community. The House Captains have created a sense of enthusiasm and excitement, and fostered a sense of belonging. Glenwood students have enjoyed this weekly event and have benefited greatly.

Year 12—Last school term In all my career I cannot recall a more challenging and unique set of circumstances for HSC students as the ones our current cohort are facing in 2020. Our Year 12 students continue to approach their studies with commitment and resilience knowing that they have the full support of their teachers and that all year 12 students state wide are in the same boat. The Year 12 teachers, the Welfare Team and the Learning Support team have been outstanding in providing ongoing support for our students and they have played a significant role in ensuring their continuity of learning and wellbeing throughout the year. Year 12 and parents will soon receive a summary of organisation for upcoming events and procedures including graduation, sign out and formal. The Executive Team have been engaged in planning these events to consider COVID restrictions. The biggest challenge is the factor of the unknown and the absence of a crystal ball. In saying that, the school is committed to providing our Class of Year 12 the school leaving experience they deserve to celebrate thirteen years of schooling, farewell them appropriately and wish them all the best for their future.

Preliminary Examinations Year 11 are preparing for the upcoming Preliminary Examinations. A reminder to all students that there are numerous supports available to assist in their exam preparation, for example, there are weekly sessions of Maths and Science help during the breaks and the Homework Centre after school. Exam preparation really begins the day when your course begins, because your success depends on your day-to-day study habits as much as it depends on the more concentrated periods of study in the weeks leading up to the exam. If you have well-organised and complete notes and have regularly revised your work at the end of each topic or section, you are already on the way to success. However, in the weeks before the exam, you can aim for

efficient and effective study by acting on the following steps.

• Organise your time

• Make a study plan

• Organise your space (physical and mental)

• Organise your material

• Do some research

• Revise

• Test yourself

• Make your final preparations

Parent and teacher Interviews Years 7 - 10 parent and teacher interviews will be conducted via zoom meetings. Each teacher will have a zoom meeting code that will need to be utilised to enter the meeting. This will be available to you when you book your interview time. To facilitate the efficiency of this process please adhere to your allocated time, as the next appointment will be in the zoom wait room ready for admission. Even though we are conducting these meeting online this year, we know you will find this an informative experience as you discuss your child’s progress with their classroom teacher. N-Award data N-Award idata is visible for students and parents on the Sentral portal. In order to find this information, students and parents need to simply click on the Wellbeing section in the portal where they see a summary of the Praise Data and N-Awards. If they have an N-Award, they can click on the incident and see what the warning was issued for and if it has been redeemed or not. i.e 'in progress' or 'resolved'. This is available to all Year 9 to 12 students and parents. In this way you will be aware of what you need to do to redeem this N – award warning enabling all students to keep better track. It is strongly recommended that students should complete tasks and submit by the due date to avoid N- Award warning notifications.

House Games

Our House Captains this year have introduced a new activity for students to be a participate in school, The Glenwood House Games. This has been taking place each Thursday lunch throughout term 2 and 3, offering a range of mini-games for students to compete in and earn points for their house whilst having the chance to win prizes such as movie vouchers. Some of the games so far have included soccer ball juggling, cup stacking, and basketball free throws. Over final weeks of term 3, we will be introducing small team-based games such as mini cricket. The Glenwood House Games is a new initiative that will hopefully become a mainstay event for all students to enjoy right throughout the year.

The HSC Minimum Standard The NSW government is committed to requiring students to demonstrate a minimum standard of literacy and nu-meracy to receive the HSC from 2020. The HSC minimum standard exams are a series of short online tests in read-ing, writing and numeracy. Students need to achieve a Level 3 or a Level 4 in each exam. Only students who meet the HSC minimum standard in all three areas will receive an HSC credential. Students do not need to meet the HSC minimum standard to: • Study HSC courses

• Sit HSC exams

• Receive HSC assessment and exam results

• Receive an ATAR

• Receive a Record of School Achievement. Students are given four chances a year to sit each exam, starting in Year 10. Students will sit each exam when we believe they are ready. At Glenwood, the Learning and Support Team are working closely with the English and Maths faculties to ensure every student is prepared for the three exams. In English, Year 10 have just completed a four-week, intensive writing unit which was specifically designed to increase the students' skill level in writing. The content covered in all Year 10 Maths courses provides students with the knowledge and skills needed for them to pass the numeracy exam. Year 10 students have begun sitting the exams at school. They are able to access their results and print their achievement certificates through their NESA Students Online account. What is a minimum standard report? Students can access their minimum standard test results through their Schools Online account. They can also print a minimum standard report that clearly shows the level (1-4) that they achieved in the test. Level 3 is the minimum standard.

If you have any questions regarding the HSC minimum standard exams, please contact Ms Liz Cummins via the school’s phone number. Learning Centre

HAPPY 40TH

BIRTHDAY HARRY POTTER

Happy 40th Birthday to Harry Potter! Hard to believe, but the most popular boy wizard in the world has turned the big 4-0. Of course the internet celebrated the event, therefore we decided that Glenwood High School Library also needs to as well with our large fan base.

The Harry Potter series has always been one of the much loved and borrowed books of our Library. On Friday 31

st July, more than 50 students joined with the library staff for Harry Potter's 40

th Birthday Trivia Challenge.

Here’s to the boy who sparked the magic. The Library set up a wonderful display of all the books in the series and had lots of decorations around to bright-en up the day for the event. When the students arrived at lunchtime, they had to answer a quick question to be eligible for a lucky door prize and then form teams for our Kahoot quiz.

We were impressed by the incredible knowledge of JK Rowling's world the students had. The day went off with a bang and was so popular that we have had a few requests for more events like this in the Library. While everyone had a great time, and was rewarded with chocolate frogs and lollies, third place went to Talicia in an impressive solo effort, 2nd place to Milla, Indiana, Jazmine and Chloe.

1st place with an outstanding 23 out of 25 questions correct went to Diyana, Sahaj, Yenuki and Brianna. Well done team POTTha!

Congratulations to everyone!

Student Representative Council Report

The Student Representative Council have been busy over the past term working on various projects and initiatives for our respective year groups. Our main focus has been on the re-viewing the student survey data, whilst also planning for another successful Spring Fair and Jersey Day in 2020.

___________________________

We are pleased to announce that Glenwood High School’s annual SRC Spring Fair will once again take place on Friday 4

th September (Week 7). FOR STUDENTS ONLY

This event is an opportunity to fundraise for an important charity, Pink Ribbon, which is an or-ganisation supporting those suffering from Breast Cancer and one that was selected following feedback provided by our peers in the recent Student Survey 2020. As a part of the tradition, the SRC are bringing back the food trucks and inflatables, as well as hosting a busking stall, art exhibition, petting zoo, handball competition and live music. Which will be held in an ex-tended lunch. We are really looking forward to coming together after what has been a challenging year for all. Mackenzie, Year 10 SRC Representative

JERSEY DAY is one of the favourite days of the year for our Student Representative Council at Glenwood High School as it is all about promoting awareness of The Organ and Tissue Authority and the DONATE LIFE network. On Friday 4

th September, 2020 schools and workplaces across Australia will be pro-

moting students and employees to wear their favourite sporting jersey to school or work to show their support for the DONATE LIFE network and begin the conversation with their friends and families about Organ Donation. Students at Glenwood High School will have the opportunity to participate in Jersey Day by wearing their favourite sporting jersey over the top of their normal school uniform. JERSEY DAY has been inspired by the story of NATHAN GREMMO who was tragical-ly lost in an accident in May 2015. Nathan’s family chose to give the gift of life to others to honour the legacy of Nathan’s generous personality.

This campaign is all about raising awareness – there is no requirement to raise funds. We are also pleased to announce that your SRC have arranged for a special guest, Jade (Nathan Gremmo’s cousin, also a Year 12 student), to come in and share the meaning of Jersey Day in a pre-recorded video. Stay tuned as this will be shown during Connect sessions on the day. NATHAN GREMMO’S DONATION STORY

On Thursday April 30th, 2015 the Gremmo family’s life changed forever when their eldest child

Nathan, aged 13 was critically injured while crossing the road. Despite an off-duty paramedic

and policewoman rushing to assist and a Care Flight trauma team and paramedics arriving

shortly after, his injuries were too severe and Nathan died the next day in hospital.

Generous and loving to the end, Nathan Gremmo became an organ donor, his last and most

amazing gift was to save the lives of six people – including five young adults and a baby. Hours

before his death he wrote on his Instagram account, “You only live once but if you do it right

once is enough”. Wise beyond his years, he definitely was an extraordinary young man. Nathan

is described by his father Michael, mother Kylie and sisters Ashley and Annaliese as “a boy with

a unique sense of humour, a love for animals and an insatiable energy for life.”

ORGAN DONATION – THE FACTS

One organ and tissue donor can transform the lives of many people. Australia is a world leader

for successful transplants. Australia’s donation rate has more than doubled in recent years, but

there is much more we can do. In Australia and internationally the need for transplantation

exceeds the availability of organs. Around 1,600 Australians are currently waitlisted for a

transplant. On average, people on the transplant list must wait between 6 months – 4 years. A

further 12,000 Australians are on dialysis, many of whom would benefit from a kidney trans-

plant.

The Redgum Issue 5 Term 3, 14 August 2020

Johan and Harry were both suspended from school for a day after willingly watching a schoolyard fight. Their school had a zero-tolerance policy toward fighting and believed that those who watched a fight were as complicit in the conflict as those engaged in the fighting.

The reactions of both sets of parents to the boys’ suspensions differed greatly. Johan’s parents supported the school’s actions and made the necessary changes to their work schedules to accommodate the suspension. Privately, they thought that the suspension may have been harsh, but as they agreed with the school’s zero tolerance approach to violence, they knew they had no option but to accept the suspension. They counselled their son against similar behaviour in future and made sure his time away from school was spent doing schoolwork.

Harry’s parents weren’t quite so supportive. Thinking that their son’s suspension was unfair, they contacted the school’s principal asking to have the suspension removed. The principal listened to their concerns however she didn’t remove the suspension. She reminded Harry’s parents of the reasons behind the school’s zero tolerance approach to fighting and urged them to support of their policy. Disappointed but obviously not deterred, Har-ry’s father took time off work to take his son on a fishing trip on the day of the suspension. This action showed little regard for the school’s efforts to encourage a culture of respectful relationships, as well as scant respect for the principal’s authority.

Both sets of parents thought that the suspension of their sons was harsh. However, only one set saw the situa-tion as a learning experience for the son. Johan’s parents discussed with their son the place that bystanders play when violence breaks out. They reinforced the message that although it may take courage to stop a fight or bring it to the attention of teachers, it’s these sorts of actions that constitute positive leadership.

Harry’s parents couldn’t see past the injustice of the suspension and missed a great opportunity to teach their son any number of lessons. These include what he may do next time a similar incident occurs, how he might respond when he sees someone being bullied or even how to nip conflict between peers in the bud before it escalates. There are many discussions they could have had with their son due to the suspension. From an edu-cative perspective, this was an opportunity missed.

Arguably, the bigger issue in this story is that just as Johan’s parents did, we parents need to trust the process-es that teachers put in place at school, even when we don’t always agree. Family-school partnerships are strongest when parents stand behind the difficult decisions that teachers make, even though the wisdom be-hind them may not be immediately evident. Sometimes, we all have to stand back and trust a process that’s been in put in place, particularly when it’s been implemented after a great deal of thought and diligence.
