ENERGY STAR and Connected: Drivers

•  Smart Grid and technologies intended to bring century old electricity into the 21st century, using information to move electricity more efficiently, reliably, and affordably.

•  Opportunity to leverage trusted brand to help advance the market for products with intelligent features. – EPA has long encouraged “intelligence” in products.

•  ENERGY STAR Role: deliver immediate consumer benefit and support a low-carbon electricity grid over the long-term through connected criteria.

3

ENERGY STAR and Connected: The Consumer is Key •  Offer consumers new functionality that can enable immediate energy

savings and convenience opportunities such as: •  receiving a message that your refrigerator door didn’t close; •  receiving a message there is a performance issue with your

clothes washer and enabling a service center to make an initial assessment of the problem remotely and come prepared with necessary parts;

•  being able to turn on the room AC before returning home; •  Learning how much energy you might save from lowering your

room AC’s setting a few degrees •  Help to ensure the consumer is being considered on the product side of

smart grid deployment •  Encourage manufacturers to offer products with future-oriented

capabilities that could support a reliable, lower emissions electric grid

ENERGY STAR Unique Position

–  ENERGY STAR optional criteria leverage the national platform that utilities can rely on and consumers look for, bringing together interested partners and stakeholders.

–  ENERGY STAR criteria provide consistent definitions and approaches, a consistent set of starter functionality, an emphasis on open standards, test methods for DR functionality.

–  ENERGY STAR is a trusted resource that can help consumers find these connected products and identify the benefits they offer.

–  Ability to “jump start” the market for appliances with demand response capability with small credit towards ENERGY STAR energy efficiency criteria.

13

Managing Standby Power Associated with Connected

•  Light Fixtures with connected functionality are limited to a maximum of 0.5 W in standby mode –  Motion detection and other features are maintained without negating the

benefits of connected functionality •  Connected thermostats are limited to a maximum consumption of 3W •  The EVSE specification will include an connected adder to the standby power

limit

ENERGY STAR Connected Thermostats –A Different Approach

•  Estimate of energy savings developed from analysis and aggregation of data from customers’ homes –  Inherently includes user interaction with the product, a key lack

in previous efforts to recognize thermostats – The product is understood as hardware and service combined – The service provider will be the ENERGEY STAR partner,

because they have the data to demonstrate savings – Data analysis and aggregation is done by service providers

using EPA-provided software, thus protecting privacy; CBs and EPA receive aggregated data only

•  Expected to be complete December 2016

Connected Appliances Future Opportunities

•  Realize the IoT vision of connected “things” doing really smart things by working together –  Pool Pump monitors pool usage, weather conditions and

water quality to minimize energy use –  Connected Thermostat maintains comfort but minimizes

energy use thru: •  Access to weather data •  Occupancy detection

–  Integration with other connected devices •  When alarm is armed, connected devices go into away

mode •  Dishwasher/Clothes Washer – communicates scheduled &

historical time and magnitude of hot water & electrical consumed to enable –  Energy optimization of hot water generation –  Intelligent management of energy storage and rooftop

solar

Connected Home Opportunity

•  Connected Home Energy Management System (HEMS) in 20131:

–  Was valued at $1.5 billion.

–  Utility market for HEMS solutions was valued at $106 million and is estimated to grow to $992 million by 2017.

–  Non-utility market was valued at $1.1 billion, includes product sales and service subscriptions.

–  Top two leading home automation companies combined had over 2 million customers paying monthly subscription fees of between $20 and $60.

•  The connected kitchen, with its ability to make us healthier, safer and less wasteful, will present a $10.1 billion market opportunity by 2020. 2

•  More than 65 million Americans already have access to some form of utility demand response program.3

Energy Efficiency is Emerging as a Key Driver in Connected Homes

•  Some of the most desired smart devices are: thermostats, door locks, lighting, monitoring cameras, and a master remote for all household control.

Source: State of the Smart Home Report, Icontrol Networks, 2015.

•  Motivations: One of the key drivers is security with 90% consumer agreement, yet others are emerging:

–  70% are excited about cost savings from energy efficiency

–  Nearly 50% list helping the environment as a key feature of a smart home

–  Nearly 50% are motivated by the potential in convenience of programming home settings and maintenance

Lessons Learned •  Establishing definitions, basic functionality, including DR, criteria, establishing

uniform test for DR important first step. –  Still early days, not yet at state where standardizing all (e.g.,

interoperability), makes sense. •  Manufacturers have been slow to enter in appliance space. Greater interest

from manufacturers in products with immediate, obvious consumer service like connected thermostats, room air conditioning, lighting, electric vehicle supply equipment. –  Good overlap with utility interest.

•  Consumer needs education; need to understand value. Partners share their insights on what will resonate: –  Sears: What we’ve learned from our customers is that we need to share

stories/examples that demonstrate emotional value from connected appliances. Appealing to safety/security, convenience/time savings, and family health, in addition to the cost savings that the proper use represents, will help build the appeal. In store/online demonstrations are also going to be effective.

•  Growing participation from manufacturers now due to greater interest in the connected home.
