The Jersey Shore Region would like to welcome the following new members to its club!

Peter Michaelson, 2017 911

A special thank you to Bill Casey for 50 years of dedication to the JSR PCA as our current Tourmeister

and a past President, on top of all of his contributions and support to the club and board!

President’s Message Gary Tucker

Feedback I received was “join those bunch of gear heads?”. Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait minute! What gives you the perception of “a bunch of gear heads”? Well, it turns out, “newbies’” equate a car club with a bunch of folks standing around with their hoods up looking at and talking about motors. Think about it… Have cars & coffee events not EXPOLDED over the last few years? Drive down the highways like route 33, 34, 35 and 36 on any given sunny Saturday and you will see a parking lot of cars parked and hoods open. Just as times are changing technology wise in our world, so are “pop up” cars & coffee events. One new owner went as far as to tell me how “they” jam up parking in the Grove in Shrewsbury on occasion. So, I got to talking travel and recreation with this particular client. I learned that “back in the day” they enjoyed road trips to cool places. Naturally, I broke out a copy of the Shoreline and went to the event calendar. Longwood Gardens, West Point, Cruise and Dine, that got their attention! I then handed a copy pf Panorama we had here. Showed the calendar of events. The PCA PA-RADE, zone 1 weekender at Saratoga Springs and the many, many “things to do” with their PORSCHE! They were sold and I am sure signed up. Point is, it’s up to us as stewards of this 57 year old club to keep the momentum going. Track folks; how so many have progressed from DE-

to club racing, and brought many new faces into this realm, fantastic! Tour Meisters; great ideas! What we need to do is increase membership of OUR region of our club and tout all the benefits of us and national! We need to grow membership so we can increase subsidies from Na-tional, be able to do more events, and, as I firmly believe in everything I do, “we are running a marathon, not a sprint”, so I look long range. Long range it would be great to have more “chair” people helping out, a shiny new Shoreline in the future, an updated website. The possibilities are endless, but with so much “good feedback” I think this club can keep moving up and up the ranks! It’s not going to happen overnight, but if we all keep “pushing” the club on others that we know or run into with PORSCHE vehicles, the possibilities are endless. Thanks for your support and I am looking forward to helping us all

push the club to new heights and keep the great suggestions coming!

We have had many new member sign ups as of late, absolutely wonderful to see! Interesting, as I have had some con-versations here as of late with clients taking delivery of their vehicles and my-self and my team requesting that they join the club and the many benefits of joining the PCA National in general as a new PORSCHE owner.

A Tale of Two Boxster's By Bill Casey

When Porsche the announced the move to four cylinder turbo motors Gary Tucker and I were talking about a similar “controversy” when Porsche announced that the new 911 would have SIX cylinder motor! It was not going to be the same any more. I owned and drove numerous four cylinder Porsche models when they were fairly new and I enjoyed the sound of the engines back there behind me. Most of the Porsches (and VW’s) had some type of accessory ex-haust system and therefore and louder and more powerful sound. Since my main interest was racing the car it had a Bursch system that had a large open pipe sticking out about a foot behind the car that really had a sweet sound. What I think we got used to be the sound of the intake system and cooling fan and generator giving that dis-tinctive sound that owners grew to enjoy. My 2015 Boxster GTS certainly has a great sound to it! There is a rumble from the exhaust and a distinct sound from the air intake when you really get on the gas. In sport and sport plus modes the exhaust sound is increased significantly! I was given a new 718 Boxster S from Porsche Monmouth so I could make some comparisons for this article. In the new 718 Porsche has seemingly increased the amount of sound deadening material so there is less en-gine noise. With the turbo in the intake system there is less of the air intake roar that I get with my car. The exhaust sound is similar for both cars. In general the new car is another home run for Porsche. There is no turbo lag at all. If you want to feel turbo lag drive a 930 sometime. This car just moves with any gas pedal input. Handling and styling are great as is the fit and finish. For anyone with questions about the four cylinder turbo Boxster or Cayman just take a test drive and bring your check book because you will not be disappointed.

Open House at Porsche Monmouth By Bill Casey

On Thursday February 16th Porsche Monmouth opened their showroom and shop to allow about one hun-dred people to see some of the new cars in stock and to see what some look like with their body work re-moved. Gary Tucker explained the nuances of the front “grilles” of the new GT3RS. They are there to cover the tire to meet federal regulations but if removed they increase down force significantly for track events. It is amazing how Porsche keeps getting more power from the cars and the amount of weight reduction they have achieved. It was great to see some people who have not been around for a while and also some new faces. Refreshments were also supplied by a local coffee roaster who was kept quite busy. All attendees received a goody bag and a lucky few won raffle prizes as well. Another great event from Gary and his people at Por-sche Monmouth.

FROM WHINE, TO WIN…. AT DAYTONA IN 15 DAYS!!!!!!!!! An incredible but true drama from Bodymotion Racing

By Michael Bavaro The set up: On Monday, January 9th, the Bodymotion Racing #12 Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport was on its way home to New Jersey from Daytona International Speedway tests days. The three day test saw record low tempera-tures and freezing rain. On Saturday, January 7th, the Bodymotion Racing Porsche GT4 Clubsport # 12 car was severely damaged when it contacted an unprotected lighting pole on the infield portion of the course. The car was clearly unable to continue the on-track testing. So, we loaded the car and headed north. After an all-night drive the car was unloaded at our shop in Ocean N.J. and within a few hours a determination was made that the “tub” sustained damaged to its aluminum structure that could not be repaired. Damage of this nature is simply not repairable and requires a complete new chassis, known as a replacement “tub”. Tuesday, January 10th, Porsche Motorsports North America sends Bodymotion authorization forms, payment information, and chassis loss verification. This included cutting a section of floor from the chassis with the serial number on it. This makes the old tub officially scrape, and provides verification that there cannot be two cars with the same serial number. This chassis section is sent over night via Federal Express to Porsche Motorsports headquarters in California. Thursday January 12th, Frankfurt, Germany, the new chassis tub is stamped with the serial number, pallet-ized, wrapped in shrink wrap then delivered to Lufthansa and loaded onto a 747 cargo plane. Verification of shipment confirmed on line here at our shop. The clock starts Friday January 13th. Day 1

A shop meeting is convened at Bodymotion in Ocean N.J. first thing in the morning. Plans are discussed to best handle what essentially is building a complete new race car in ten days. This would leave one day for graphic application and two days for transport to Daytona, Florida. This is where the clock and the whining start. The wrecked car must be disassembled carefully, all parts photographed and cataloged. The chassis was placed on a lift adjacent to another lift. A Go-Pro camera was placed above both lifts with a wide angle lens to capture what would become a two car show. The camera was set to take a snap shot once every minute during the process. The disassembly began only after Porsche Motorsports (PMNA) verified that the chassis tub was loaded on the aircraft. The folks at PMNA from the beginning of this process, thru delivery were nothing short of spec-tacular. Every single deadline was made, as promised. Communication from PMNA headquarters in Califor-nia, to their counterparts in Germany, including Lufthansa, were spot on. Drama was on full boil on Friday when the aircraft was held, in Germany, due to an ice storm. We watched it live on the Lufthansa Cargo site as our new chassis took off 2 hours late bound for Newark N.J. Arrival was also delayed to late Friday evening/early Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, back at our shop, all guns were brought to bear. Every employee at our shop had a hand in this re-in-CAR-nation. Porsche Cars North America and local Penske Porsche dealer also played a role. Many of the GT4 Clubsport parts are derived from the street version and therefore the parts are sourced from PCNA. Parts lists were compiled and sent to PCNA, most parts arrived, as normal, the next business day. However, certain parts had to come from Germany. Those parts would not arrive until January 25th, the day after we would depart for the trip south. Arrangements were made for those parts, after arrival here in New Jersey, to be sent next day air directly to Daytona International Speedway. Other component parts were also damaged in the wreck, some were obvious, like the exhaust system. We ordered a complete new system back on the 9th, on our way home, in the transporter. When we built the car last year, we choose to use an aftermarket performance race exhaust from a German company, M&M, in-stead of the system the car came with from the Porsche factory for performance reasons. However, as we found out a year ago when we ordered the first system, it takes 30 days to fabricate the entire exhaust sys-tem and have it wrapped in a special thermal insulation. This insulation provides better flow of the hot ex-haust gases. We asked the importer FVD of Deerfield Beach Florida to expedite delivery of said system.

The Shoreline | March—April 2017 | Page 10

Meanwhile we also contacted our shock absorber supplier. We needed to have both rear shock absorbers repaired and rebuilt in the now, shortening time frame. There was simply not enough time possible to: re-move the shocks, ship them to Holland, disassemble them to determine what parts would have to be made, fabricate the parts, build the shocks, and get them to us in time for the Tuesday January 24th departure date. So our friends at shock absorber virtuoso company, JRZ, set about manufacturing two brand new rear shocks, complete, ready to install on arrival. However the time frame was still short by two days, so they would overnight them directly to Daytona International Speedway. Back at the shop, we determined that the entire right rear suspension, including the rim, tire and brakes would need to be replaced. More parts were overnighted from both PMNA and PCNA. The road wheels, or rims we use are from a US manufacturer Forgeline in Dayton, Ohio. The right rear rim was 18” diameter by 10.75” width. The impact from the collision rendered it elliptical some, 6 inch diameter by 30 inch. Forgeline has been a wonderful supplier to the racing industry. Similar to JRZ, FVD and Porsche, they are racers at heart, and understand the time factor when it comes to missing a race because their part was not ready. Forgeline, like Bodymotion and all the others in this disorte, are family businesses, racing is a family business and they get it. So, Forgeline stepped up and made us a new wheel, finished exactly like the dam-aged one (except it is round) and promised it, delivered, you guessed it, to Daytona Speedway , for Thurs-day ,January 26th, our first day of track practice. Day 2 The new chassis arrived as promised, by PMNA, Saturday morning, 14th of January to Newark/ Liberty airport cargo terminal. Since we were so busy stripping the damaged chassis at the shop, we sent a local tow company we use, Central Towing, Red Bank N.J. owner Alan sent his top man, Logan at 7:00 am to be the first at the Lufthansa Cargo pick-up. I met up with Alan Friday night after PMNA sent me a huge stack of import and identification paperwork. Apparently this shipment had cleared customs while still in the air. The pallet was off loaded and put on Logan’s flatbed for the hour trip south to Bodymotion. We unloaded the 962 pound chassis at 10:00 am and went to work. Someone was on one or the other chassis round the clock for the next 9 days. Every single part was moved into the new chassis, or replaced with a new part. The time lapse documentation is absolutely fantastic and was orchestrated by our office accountant Derek Hopkinson. His time lapse photography is a marvelous record of the work done over 9 days to build this new car. Only the graphics done on a freezing cold Sun-day January 22nd Day 10, were missed by the camera. The car was moved into the paint department where the shop temperature is kept warmer and the camera was not repositioned. So it came to be, minus the complete exhaust system, rear shocks, right rear axle and tire and final suspen-sion set up, the car was loaded into our transporter on build day 12, Tuesday, January 24th for the trip to Daytona. Now everything was up to us to get the car safely to Daytona and hope all the overnight shipments would be delivered on time. And delivered they were!!! All of our vendors came thru!!! The Bodymotion crew worked late at the track and had the car aligned and running on Day 14. Just in time to make final tech in-spection and first practice. The rest is history. Day 15. January 27th 2017. Race Day. The first 4 hour race in IMSA Continental Challenge history, won by Cameron Cassels, Trent Hindman and the Bodymotion Racing organization Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport. Our thanks to all of our sponsors, Delaware Investments, JRZ ,Forgeline, Veristor, and to our industry partners, Porsche Motorsports North America, Guard Transmission, MK scales, Hubstands Pro, KC alignment, M&M, FVD, Penske Porsche, Racing Radios, Chop Design, Pagid , PWR, MSI, Wrightwood Racing and Continental Tire, the #12 Por-sche Cayman GT4 Clubsport came out on top. What a thrill to be on the podium at Daytona. What a thrill to be there representing all those at our shop and other shops around the world who helped make this hap-pen. To be on the top step, the win, in 15 days.

Rolex 24 Hour in Daytona at Woody's By Bill Casey

On Saturday January 28th approximately 30 members attended our initial event of the year. This is becoming a more popular event and has been a great way to start off the New Year. The event was sponsored by Por-sche Monmouth this year so if you see Gary Tucker thank him for the fine food and drink. It was unusual that the hot topic this year was the first IMSA Continental Challenge 4 hour race held the day before. It was hot because the #12 Bodymotion Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport driven by Cassels and Hind-man won the race! Great driving and pit strategy along with some bad luck for other cars gave them the victo-ry followed by three more Caymans. The food started with a large selection of appetizers and beverages followed later by several pizzas and all disappeared quite rapidly. Everyone seemed to enjoy the racing, food and good camaraderie. If you missed this event check the website or Shoreline Newsletter and don't miss the next one.

Dealer Perspective

By Mathew Cascello, Service Advisor

“We have high standards. As do you. You want something special. That's why you drive a Por-sche and why you deserve equally special service. Precise, professional, dynamic, and above all: tai-lored to your exact requirements. Typically Por-sche.”

This was the philosophy statement by Porsche I read upon joining the service department at Porsche Monmouth. Joining a brand that not only sets a standard of excellence, but delivers excellence in all aspects of the brand is incredible. Being new to the Porsche brand is an ex-citing experience, especially with all the advancements Porsche has made with their turbo technology and PDK transmissions, not to mention the future of Mission-E. I joined the au-tomobile industry 5 years ago after attending many local events which sparked my love for cars and mainly Porsche. As a service advisor at Porsche Monmouth, I quickly recognized the common passion and goals that the staff has for the brand and customers. To be at Porsche Monmouth at this time is truly exciting. The new building and the services we are going to provide will be second to none. As part of the service department, I am able to utilize Porsche master certified technicians, factory genuine Porsche parts and a fleet of complimentary Porsche loaner vehicles to offer our clientele during their visit at Porsche Monmouth. I look forward to being on this team and growing the brand at this incredible time. This is not only a job to me but it is a passion and there is no better brand than Por-sche. If you have any questions, I can be reached at [email protected]
