THE SHOFAR From the Desk of Rabbi Rebecca P. Shinder
I have found a source that combines three of some of my favorite things: Challah + Tzedakah + The Pittsburgh Steelers = Challah-Back Girls! Follow this link: www.challahbackgirls.com to read the full story about four sisters who combine their love of baking challah with their passion for social justice in a project dubbed “Challah-Back Girls” www.challahbackgirls.com Each week since mid-June, Sara, Marni, Hannah, and Eliana Loffman have been baking and selling challot (plural of this tasty bread that is not just for Shabbat!). They’re charging $18 for two loaves, choose from plain, everything but the bagel, chocolate chip, or coffee crumb and they donate more than half of the proceeds to an organization benefitting a social-justice cause. This week, the Challah-Back Girls are donating to the Innocence Project! This organization advocates for reforms that help prevent and address wrongful conviction. They first came across this life saving program while watching America's Got Talent. Contestant Archie Williams' story moved them (and millions) and brought to light the critical and transformative justice work that Innocence Project does to undo the harms of wrongful incarceration, especially towards black and brown communities. As of July 19th, they’ve baked 500 challot filling 250 orders, hand delivered some of them to more than 50 homes and shipped others to more than 130 cities in 27 states. They’ve donated to charities including the Okra Project, the Loveland Foundation, Everyone Home DC, Campaign Zero, and most recently, the B3 Foundation started by Pittsburgh Steeler, Zach Banner. I only discovered this source this past Friday afternoon, so it was too late to order last week. However, I just ordered for this week and hope that you will, as well! The picture shown below is from a recent article and features the bakers wearing Steelers shirts and masks. So follow their lead and... Be masked, be safe, be physically distant (with people who aren't your sisters! And be sure to wash your yadayim b'mayim! Warmly, Rabbi Shinder

August typically brings us closer to the end of our traditional summer. For some, it’s the last few weeks of freedom before going back to school. For others, the last few weeks of having the kids home and needing to keep them entertained. For most of us, the last few weeks of high heat before the start of the seasonal cool-down. For us Jews, it brings us closer to the season of high holy days; days of reflection and awe. But 2020 brings no ordinary August (or March, or April, or May, etc.). We’re hearing new sayings like “the new normal”, “contact tracing” and “stage 4 re-opening.” Recently, on a friend’s Facebook page, I saw a post asking people to post things they’ve heard in 2020 that seemed perfectly normal, that would have sounded crazy in 2019. There were many responses from funny to apropos but one of my favorites was, “You’re going to the bank? Don’t forget your mask!” For our community, I would also add the saying, “Zoom Shabbat”. Yet, this extraordinary August has us wondering if kids will be going back to school, or will they continue to attempt learning from home? Will parents still need to find ways to entertain and home-school their kids, perhaps while working from home themselves? Will we be able to be together again in our physical sanctuary or social hall? Will the heat ever end? (OK, well, that’s more of a global warming question than strictly related to the pandemic, but since I’m on an August theme, I thought it was worth throwing in there ☺. The truth is, most of us adults can probably attest to the fact that life is ever-changing. We’d like to believe that there is such a thing as “normal” but if there is, what is it, exactly? I can attest from my own life; I have lost jobs, and the world goes on. I have lost parents, before and during the pandemic, and the world goes on. I have been married and divorced, and the world goes on. I have completed or not completed degrees, and the world goes on. So, from my perspective, the world goes on, no matter what. It may be different than I had anticipated prior to any of the abovementioned events, but on it goes. The High Holy Days will come. We will reflect, perhaps repent, perhaps express our anger to God for the situation we’re in and the world will go on. It will go on at Temple Beth Shalom via digital means, until it is safe for us all to reconvene physically. I look forward to finding out what this “new normal” will be. Whatever it is, I will face it as I have faced all of the other “new normals” in my life; with patience, flexibility, open eyes, and an open heart. I look forward to facing it with my TBS family virtually, in person, or in any other way that may arise. Please let us know how we can help you through this new normal. If you haven’t yet completed the member survey you received via email, please take a few minutes to do that so we have a better idea of how we can move forward together.

Family Learning in the Age of Zoom
ZOOMishpacha will offer family learning that allows for physical distancing and community contact…

A Few Words From Rabbi Shinder... In this time when public schools are still scrambling to decide what to do, I thought it prudent to give an update on how TBS kids and their families will learn next year. With the technology engine driven by Elizabeth Frederick, the educational expertise of Sharon Halper, the devotion of dedicated teachers, and a reimagining of what is possible done by yours truly, here is how our kids and even our entire community will Zoom, connect, and learn: Hebrew School: Thursdays 4:30 - 5:30PM I will begin with a 15 minute assembly complete with a Hebrew word of the day and a Jewish value of the month. Among other modalities, these items will be taught by song, computer graphics, and/or current events. The school will comprised of different breakout rooms - for example, Alef (Beginner) class and Hay (B'nei Mitzvah) class will meet separately in their different "classrooms." When possible, the last 5 minutes of the class will be conversational, social, and maybe even a little goofy! The kids will get to vote on their own theme days and will still have the opportunity to pray for a snow day!! I have restructured the remaining instruction to be a more holistic experience of Judaism - our culture, our holidays, our values that will be presented at different times of the weekend. 1st Sunday of the Month: 10:30AM ZOOMishpacha (family learning) 2nd Saturday of the Month: 9AM Youngster Shabbat (up to 2nd grade): Stories,
Songs, and Stuffed Animals 3rd Friday Night of the Month: 6PM Informal Learning over Shabbat Dinner 4th Saturday Night of the Month: 8PM Havdalah Hangout: Social Action and
Socialization More details will follow. I wanted to give families the chance to see how we are reimagining how TBS LEARNS!! I you have any questions or suggestions, please respond to me at [email protected]. The graphic on the next page summarizes. We’re excited for this new opportunity to connect and perfect our school.
We encourage you to follow and share our brand new Instagram account:

ABOUT OUR TEACHERS
I hope everyone is having a safe and healthy summer. Of course it’s not the summer we expected, but at least it’s a challenge we’re all facing together. The summer marks the start of a new fiscal year for TBS, and understandably it can be a confusing and uncertain time.
Yes, the building itself is not open, and we are all saddened by that, but TBS continues to run every day. Iris is in the office managing our daily affairs, the Rabbi is working harder than ever - her normal duties extended with daily messages of wisdom and hope and discovering new methods of engagement.
The building and grounds must be maintained, utilities and salaries need to be paid. We received assistance from the PPP program, but only enough to cover 10 weeks of expenses. To keep TBS solvent through the next year we MUST have the financial support of our members. We are not a service industry; our budget is not meant to be transactional. Your dues and donations pay for the continued existence of our Jewish community and family.
So please, if you are financially able, pay your dues. You can even pay online at tbsny.org by clicking the Donate link. And if you have been fortunate enough to maintain your full salary through the pandemic, please consider giving a little more this year, to help support those who have not been so lucky.
Thank you, and be safe. Jeff Hannes, 1st Vice President

My dear TBS Family, Sometimes it feels like a lifetime ago when I was last in our little movie seat sanctuary, teaching in front of one of our classrooms, or leading Friday services on a humid summer evening. These are only some of the moments I’ve so fondly revisited over the years in my mind and reflected on during the recent honor of receiving the Woman of Valor Award in my decade from the Orange County Jewish Federation. To go back in time to these places in my mind, I rewind through the different chapters of my life since I left Orange County. For me, that montage is a series of visceral memories, not all captured in photos on Facebook or bullet points on my resume. But through these rewarding and challenging times I spent as a Peace Corps Volunteer, as a Fulbright Scholar, and as a Harvard graduate – I have carried you all with me. You are all the best parts within the classrooms, social hall, and sanctuary of Temple Beth Shalom. Thank you for the honor of praying, celebrating, and mourning beside you. Thank you for trusting me to teach your children. Thank you for believing in me before I ever went anywhere or had any of those adventures. Thank you for always being so generous with your love, support, and encouragement. I am so grateful to have experienced the truly unique kindness and embrace of the Temple Beth Shalom community. You will never know the deep effect you’ve had on my life, my heart, my faith, and my work. Love always, Kiowa Pratt-Gordon
Kiowa wanted to share some of the special moments of her TBS experiences. Gives us the chance to remember the kids were so young and the old sanctuary!
