out to someone on Tailgate Sun-day—the Lord might just use you to touch their life for Jesus.

For over a year, our Constitution and By-Laws Committee has been working to create a new set of By-Laws for our church family. This document is the ex-pression of who we are, what we’re supposed to be doing and how we conduct ourselves. Of course, the Bible itself is our standard for faith and practice; still, the By-Laws (the term “By-Laws” actually includes the Con-stitution) are important to the functioning of our church fam-ily, especially considering the changing nature of our culture and our church’s ministry to it.

When the Committee finished their work, they presented the proposed new By-Laws to the deacon fellowship on July 7, which unanimously and enthu-siastically endorsed the doc-ument. Then, on July 26, the proposed new By-Laws were presented to the congregation as a whole for consideration. Two “town hall” type meetings were scheduled (August 9 and September 20) for open discus-

sion and questions—in order that our congregation might have a full and transparent op-portunity to receive full informa-tion regarding the proposed new By-Laws and provide input to the Committee. At our next regularly scheduled business conference, the Committee will recommend that the congregation approve the new By-Laws.

Whenever a church adopts new By-Laws, it can be an anxious time for the congre-gation. So let

me take just a moment and ad-dress a few concerns:

Why are we re-writing our By-Laws? Because our existing By-Laws are out-dated in view of the changing realities of our nation as well as the changing nature of church ministries. The By-Laws were last re-written over ten years ago.

How can I obtain a copy of the proposed new By-Laws? Both the old By-Laws and the pro-posed new ones are available at the Welcome desk in the front lobby of the church and through the church office, Monday through Friday.

“That’s one of the greatest joys I know, to

lead someone into a saving knowledge of Jesus.”

At one of our previous Tailgate Sundays, Pam and I met a cou-ple our age who happened to attend our church for the first time on that day. They decided to stay for the bar-b-que lunch and we had the opportunity to eat with them and get to know them. Over the next few Sundays we noticed them around our church more and more and with-in a few months they committed to our church family as mem-bers and are growing in the Lord now as part of a vital Sunday School class. That’s our purpose for all events like Tailgate Sun-day—opportunities for building friendships with people (new and old) that lead to deeper con-nections within our church fam-ily. I hope each of you will reach

How will the proposed new By-Laws change our old By-Laws? In two ways: first, the new By-Laws will specifically address the sanctity of biblical marriage and protect the church (as much as possible) from government intrusion into our wedding policies. Two, the new By-Laws will create an administrative group (called the Ministry Council) that will be charged with the administrative tasks of the congregation. While the remainder of the new By-Laws is re-organized in content, the substance is similar to the old By-Laws.

What is the Ministry Council? It is a group of lay leaders elected by the congregation that will work with the Senior Pastor to make decisions regarding the overall administrative needs of the congregation. While the Ministry Council will be responsible for many decisions, the congregation itself will continue to have direct input in key areas: the calling of a Senior Pastor; the election of deacons; the adoption of the annual church budget; any purchase of property; any indebtedness; and amendments to the By-Laws.

How can my voice be heard in the process of considering the new By-Laws? Our next town hall meeting is scheduled Sunday, September 20 (time and location to be announced), where you may bring any con-cerns or questions you have. You may also contact any members of the Committee (names and contact info is available through the church office).

If we can help you in any way through this process, please let us know here in the church office.

On another note, let me officially welcome Mark Owens and his wife Rayna into our church family as our new Associate Pastor for Equipping. Mark will be responsible for all our discipling ministries, to work with our lay leaders as well as our small groups in order to bring them a greater degree of effectiveness in making disciples for Jesus. He comes to us after a long and fruitful ministry at First Baptist Church, North Augusta, SC. You will find him to be a man who loves Jesus and the gospel, a great husband and dad, a man passionate about prayer and missions, and a man who loves the church and wants to see our congregation grow and mature in gospel ministry. I know you’ll love him and his family.

See you at Tailgate Sunday,

Pastor Mike

Introducing... Our New Preschool Ministry Director!

There is an exciting new addition to our Lex Kids team! As ministries grow, new needs arise. Over the last several years, our preschool ministry has grown in amazing ways. Thoughtful and strategic lessons are taught in every one of

our classrooms . . . even our nursery! This fall, we will be adding a full-time Preschool Ministry Director to our staff.

Jeanette Simpson, who has served as our children’s ministry associate for over a year, will be stepping into that position and

bringing a great deal of expertise, passion, and vision. In the past, Jeanette has served as a children’s ministry director, weekday preschool director and preschool teacher. We have loved having her on our staff and look forward to seeing her flourish in this new role.

I will be transitioning to Children’s Ministry Director for elementary children. This change will allow me to narrow my focus and give me the opportunity to give extra attention to discipling children while also reaching the lost of our community.

The core value of Next Generation Ministries at LBC is to imagine ways to reach children from cradle to college. Jeanette and I will continue to work together closely to ensure this happens for all of our LexKids.

We are looking forward to another amazing year with you all and your children!

Student Ministry Families,

Make sure to look at September’s calendar for all of the programs and events going on for your students. I want to highlight a couple opportunities that are coming up. Every Wednesday night in September, your student has the chance to be a part of Encounter 431. Encounter 431 is a high impact mid-week gathering for students from 6th – 12th grade. Students have the ability to meet new friends, worship together, enjoy great food and grow in their relationships with God. It starts at 6:15 p.m.

every Wednesday in the FLC. The second opportunity I want share about is, Tailgate Sunday. On September 6,

our church is participating in its annual Tailgate Sunday event. There will be one service that Sunday at 9 a.m. Families

are encouraged to come and worship together that morning, and then eat some Hudson’s BBQ after the service is over. All of our student families will be eating lunch in the gym so directly after the service, head over to the FLC Building.

If you ever have a question or concern about the Student Ministry, please feel free to contact me anytime. I am praying for your families as you continue to adjust to the fall schedule. We love you and want to partner with you any way we can. Blessings,

Ian GeimerAssociate Pastor

Backyard Bash & Core MeetingThe second annual Backyard Bash is upon us! It will be held again at the Krick’s house (181 Taylors Cove Road) from 8 to 11:30pm on Friday, September 18. We’ll have food, games, inflatables, an outdoor movie and more! This is a great time to gather with friends, church family and leaders to enjoy the company of those who care about you. Also if you have a friend that is not connected to a church body, this would be a great place to invite them to join our family for a night of fun. We’ve seen students in the past whose journey to a relationship with Christ began at similar events. All it takes is someone to invite them. There is a mandatory CORE meeting on Sunday, September 13 at 4 p.m. in The City. Make plans to attend. If you cannot attend, contact me to let me know.

We have moved our meeting place for middle schoolers on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. to the Fellowship Hall. This has been a great change for us, and we hope to grow even more in this new space.

The Parent Care ConversationSunday, October 4 at 12 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall

Are there some changes happening in your parents’ lives that have you a little worried about them? Have you found yourself in a place where the tables are beginning to turn, where you are taking some respon-sibility for some of your parents’ physical, financial or emotional needs? Adult children are more often discovering their need to have some difficult conversations with their parents about finances and other things but are afraid to start them.

On Sunday afternoon, October 4, Lexington Baptist Church will host a seminar designed to help you think through some of the basic steps in providing parent care. The seminar is titled, “The Parent Care Con-versation: The Essential Conversations Parents and Adult Children Should Have…But Nobody Will Start.” Dr. Kevin Skipper and Chris Sheffield co-authored the book “The Parent Care Conversation” and will be on our campus to get you started in the right direction towards having these important conversations.

Topics will include: how to honor your father and mother – a Biblical approach to the conversations, tasks and challenges of parent care; the money conversation; the house conversation; the lev-els of care conversation; the essential legal conversation. We will wrap our time together with an opportunity for you to ask questions related to parent care.

Cost for this seminar will be $15, which covers lunch and all materials and handouts. You can register by contacting Marceil Mangum, minis-try assistant to senior adults and congregational care, at 803.996.8843 or [email protected].

The kids are back in school, fall sports and activities have started. It is the season of tailgating! We want to invite all of our ladies to our annual Women’s Ministry Kick-Off Event on Sunday, September 20, at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Bring your favorite tailgating food, and we will provide the drinks! Let’s gather around the tables as Daughters Of The King to worship, to fellowship, to be encouraged and to be challenged. This will be an opportunity for you to sign up for small groups, to lead a small group or to be a one-on-one mentor for a younger woman. Last year, we heard about the ministries of Women At Risk, an international organization that rescues women around the world from the evils of human trafficking. We hosted a jewelry party to provide monthly support for rescued women who now support themselves through making jewelry.

This year, we have the privilege of hearing from one of our own who is passionate about the status of women around the world. Emily Yount grew up at LBC. The Lord called her family to full-time missions when she was a teenager, and through her life experiences in a foreign country, the Lord begin to speak to Emily about women’s issues. Upon her graduation from Vanderbilt University, Emily received a fellowship to continue her education, resulting in the opportunity for travel around the globe where she met with officials in various countries to learn more about the status of women.

On September 20, Emily will share with us what God has revealed to her heart about His concern for women around the world. We will also hear an update on the progress being made to open the first safe house in South Carolina for young ladies 17 and under. Did you know that until this last legislative ses-sion, we were listed with a few other states as having the weakest laws in the nation on human trafficking? Did you know that we are a main thoroughfare for transporting children/women because of our major interstates? Did you know that Homeland Security held a sting operation in West Columbia, and that when they raided the pimp house, they found all of the five phone lines were ringing with incoming calls from Lexington to make “appointments?” We cannot close our eyes any longer to the evils of human/sex trafficking right here around us. We will learn what we can do and how we can support those who have been robbed of their childhood by the evils existing in our communities and our state.

Mark your calendars for an evening designed for women, about women and God’s heart for women! It will be an evening to remember! See you on September 20 at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall!

Now through September 306:15 p.m. on Wednesdays

D Groups (short for Discipleship Groups) are a way to connect intentionally with other believers and grow together through Bible study and fellowship. We are excited to begin four new D Groups, as well as a new pastoral Bible study this month. These groups will each meet on Wednesdays at 6:15 p.m.

The Progress of Redemption ChapelDon Howell The story of God’s redemptive love as shown throughout the Bible. Don is a professor of New Testament and Greek at Columbia International University. Before coming to Columbia, he served with OMF International in Japan from 1979 until 1994 as a church planter and theological educator. He has taught in Latin America, Eastern Europe, China and Micronesia and has been Research Fellow at Tyndale House (Cambridge, UK) three times. His books include “Servants of the Servant” and “The Passion of the Servant.” He is also an ordained Baptist minister- we are thrilled to welcome Don to LBC for this study!

Dare to Discipline Room CHB 203Matt & Holly Warren Discipline, when dispensed by parents with conviction and courage and in an environment of pure love, works. Help for parents of children and teens is on the way in this practical, four-week study by Dr. James Dobson that addresses boundaries, motivating without anger, actions/consequences and respect (and being worthy of it). (Book $7)

Radical Room CHB 202Jerry Freeman Take a transforming journey in authentic discipleship. As the pastor of a large and wealthy congregation, David Platt began to see a discrepancy between the reality of his church and the way Jesus said His followers lived. In Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream, Platt examines how American Christianity has manipulated the Gospel to fit our cultural preferences and challenges readers to rediscover the path. (Book $9)

The Way of the Master Room CHB 201Carrie Fudge Have you ever wanted to witness to someone, but your fears got in the way? This study will focus on how to effectively convey the gospel to others. Based on the TV series “The Way of the Master,” this study by Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort will help participants learn to use effective techniques for conveying the gospel in a way their loved ones can understand. You’ll learn to bypass the place of argument in those you are witnessing to and reach them on a conscious level. Join us for this study and become an effective witness for the Kingdom! (Book $6)

Boundaries in Marriage Room CHB 204Chris Hix They’re at the forefront of today’s Christian counseling movement, and now Drs. Cloud and Townsend help guide couples. Recommending boundaries, even in marriage, they show how respecting a spouse’s personal “territory” actually strengthens a relationship, as well as how to safeguard marriage from intruders such as idols, affairs and well-meaning parents. A Focus on the Family recommended study. (Book $10)

“And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place.” Acts 17:26

How many times in your life has there been a passage of scripture that you have heard hundreds of times and then God just reveals it in a fresh and new way? That was the case with this verse from Acts for me recently. It was during a recent short-term mission trip to New York City that God showed me things about this verse that I had never considered.

As you probably know, Paul spoke these words in Athens which at the time was one of the largest cities in the world. Athens was known for being a city filled with culture and learning. Now I was in New York, another city know for culture and learning. In New York, we found ourselves surrounded by people that didn’t look like us, didn’t talk like us, and didn’t think like us. Many of these people had come to New York City in search of something. Perhaps they were looking for a career, an education, a better future for their family, or to escape a bad situation in their homeland. However this verse spoke a very different truth to me. Perhaps the real reason that these people were in New York City was for something much more.

What if God had changed the boundaries of the dwelling places of these people to New York City and determined the time that they would be there. What if these boundaries and times had nothing to do with economics or political freedoms? What if God had determined all this because these were the people whose lives were going to be blown away by the love and grace of Jesus? What if these encountesr with Jesus would so change these people’s lives that they would share the Gospel with their own people in ways that it had never been shared before. What if God had predetermined that I be there to play a small role in all of this?

Urban ministry is so crucial and so exacting in the pursuit of making disciples across the world. Over half of the world’s population now live in cities. Perhaps nowhere is this trend more evident than here in the US. Over 22 million people live in the metro New York and nearly 20% of them are from a people group with less than 2% Christians. These people groups are not able to evangelize on their own or start a church movement amongst their own people.

At LBC, we are beginning an exciting partnership with an organization called Global Gates which focuses on sharing the gospel with unreached and least-reached peoples throughout gateway cities. Already this year, we have sent two teams to participate with Global Gates in short-term missions and we will be sending our third team at the end of this month (20-26th). If you would like more information about Global Gates or reaching the unreached in our cities, please contact me.
