Principal’s Update I am delighted to be able to write my introduction for the newsletter in my new role as Academy Principal. I would like to say welcome back to everybody after what I hope

was a fantastic summer. This week it has been a pleasure to walk around the academy and to be greeted by all the smartly dressed, polite and enthusiastic students. In lessons I have had the privilege to witness a positive start by all our year groups but in particular I am pleased to say that the year 7 students have settled in really well. I am looking forward to working with all members of the community at the Thomas Alleyne’s to continue to build upon our successes of previous years and work towards making our academy outstanding.

Executive Principal’s Update Welcome back to the start of a new academic year at The Thomas Alleyne Academy. We are thrilled to be able to offer students joining Thomas Alleyne's access to one of the broadest and most innovative set of curriculum pathways

available nationally. By creating closer ties with the Da Vinci Studio Schools and NHC we can enable access to a range of subjects and expertise that will be the envy of other schools. Alongside this, we are able to retain our community identity at Thomas Alleyne's by remaining a small and supportive school that has access to a broad range of opportunities for students. I am looking forward to continuing to work with the talented students, dedicated staff and supportive parents at Thomas Alleyne's as we continue our rapid transformation into an outstanding academy.

Summer school The theme for Summer school this year was wild animals. This turned out to be a tremendous success. We loosely based this on The

Lion King, and showed the video at lunch times. We did literacy and maths in the mornings in the form of games and made this a competition between the groups.

For the first two days the children were split into two groups and each group took it in turns to make lunch for the whole Summer School. There was a delicious variety of sandwiches, apples, crisps, orange juice followed by homemade scones with strawberries and cream.

The drama department led by Mr Millership taught the main scenes of The Lion King. Mrs Steadman (Head of Year 7) had a secret talent and she taught music and singing songs from The Lion King.

In humanities with Ms Fitton and Mrs Banks we had Noah’s art. Ms Fitton produced fantastic butterflies and Mr Gitto created animals but taught in French!

In the art department led by Mrs Gibbins they made various masks such as lions, zebras and flamingos.

What can I say about science and Mr Baggshaw, explosions say no more!

In business studies lead by Mrs De Laune we produced invitations to parents and grandparents aunts and uncles for the final performance.

Mrs Hayman produced a brilliant stage for putting on the show and parents and grandparents enjoyed the performance followed by the awards. A great fun packed week was had by all!

Thank you to everyone involved in running Summer School this year!

Paris trip In July, 73 year 7 pupils travelled to Paris by coach for 5 days of French fun, food and friendship.

During their stay, students climbed to the top of Paris’ second tallest building the Montparnasse Tower, before visiting Paris’ tallest structure: the iconic Eiffel Tower. The trip also included a boat cruise along the Seine where pupils had the chance to see and learn about many other famous Parisian landmarks before finally spending a whole day in Disneyland Paris.

Students enjoyed themselves massively and did a fantastic job of representing The Thomas Alleyne Academy with impeccable behaviour throughout the trip. At the end of the trip pupils wrote their views and opinions regarding the trip all of which showed what a great experience the visit was. You can read some here:

‘’This trip I was dying to go on. I enjoyed getting out of the house and spending a few days with friends. I loved the Disneyland trip as we could go off by ourselves. Going to see the view on Montparnasse Tower was breath-taking: we could even see the Eiffel Tower. I wish that we had more time!’’ James D. ‘’I loved it, especially the food.’’ Ashley C. ‘’I enjoyed the trip so much; I came closer to some friends. My favourite part was Disneyland!’’ Rachel C. ‘’It was amazing in Paris, I had never been abroad before and I am glad I was with all my friends. I even made new friends as well. The best part was definitely Disneyland – what a land of fun. The best week ever, thank you teachers!’’ Lottie. Ms B Dessaux

PE NEWS

The PE department would like to welcome back all our students including our new Year 7s. We

have a range of clubs on at lunch times, after school and even a breakfast club. Please see the Enrichment timetable to see what sports clubs are on which days.

Currently all students are taking part in fitness tests which include cross country running, a bleep test and a tennis ball catch-and-throw test. This initiative was brought in by the PE department to try and establish the fitness levels of our students. In 6 months when another round of tests are done we would hope to see a general improvement in our students’ fitness levels. We believe this plays a vital role for students who play sport but also for students in everyday life. We also have a Rugby and Netball tour to Disneyland Paris taking place in April during the Easter holiday and there are still some spaces left. If you are interested in going on the tour please see Mr Visser or a member of the PE department.

Fun run sponsor money

The PE department would like to thank all students and parents involved in this year’s Fun Run. We managed to raise enough money to buy two trampolines to add to the one we had. With three trampolines we can now run a trampolining club at lunch time and we have also now made it

part of our curriculum and it will be taught in lesson. We have also ordered mirrors that will go up on the walls in the gym. This will benefit our students in a range of activities but especially dance and gymnastics. We have also started teaching rhythmic gymnastics this year. We still have lots that we would like to do namely resurfacing our tennis and netball courts and hopefully purchase a bowling machine for the summer. We might not be able to do that just yet but hopefully soon.

Newly refurbished Fitness Room The PE department would like to thank our partners North Herts College and also Fit4Less for providing us with equipment for our fitness room. This

area has been completely refurbished and we would like to invite all Year 9, 10, 11 and Sixth Form students to use it. We now

have a number of bikes, rowers, treadmills, a selection of weights and bars and a punching bag. Please see a member of the PE department for your induction in

how to use the equipment safely and effectively. Mr D Visser Head of Physical Education

Renaissance celebrated a successful end of first year results as described in the press

release after A level results day. We are also celebrating a dramatic increase in the number of students progressing onto A2 study, over 20% more AS students have successfully completed their studies and are joining the A2 cohort. Following GCSE results it was pleasing to note an increased trend of Year 11 students achieving 5 GCSEs, including English and Maths at C grade and above. Sixth form was very busy on results day enrolling Year 12 students onto subjects of their choice. For the first time 30% of AS students in Year 12 have applied to join the Academy externally. Students are choosing to come to Renaissance from a variety of local schools but also as far afield as St. Albans, Potters Bar and Welwyn Garden City.

Universities Destinations Teaching and Support Staff were delighted to note a record 99% success rate at A level this year. An early indicator of success was demonstrated by the commitment of our students who achieved over 90% attendance throughout the year as statistics show that high attendance equals high achievement. It was a pleasure and a joy to see A2 students receiving their results and confirming their university places. Local Stevenage students will now scatter themselves all over the UK - North, South, East and West! All students who applied to go to university were accepted. Student choices have been very varied this year with subjects such as Humanities, Social Sciences, Science and Maths. Star performer Joshua Burge will be studying Environmental Sciences at the University of Sheffield. Jack Leeson will be reading Physics with Astrophysics at the University of York. Our creative students are studying: Joe Macnamara, Drama at the University of Winchester, Grace Mullan, English Literature at the University of Lincoln. Our Social Scientists are off to study Sociology and Psychology at Canterbury Christchurch, Coventry and Portsmouth.

Oxford University Summer School Sarah Brown, one of our Senior Students attended a specialist Summer School Music Event this summer at the Oxford University. Sarah was one of the

students chosen out of 1400 applications. Here is Sarah’s story:

“Between 28th of July and 4th June, I spent a week at Oxford University having a taster course for music for students from state schools. It was a really fun and helpful week, and I met lots of great people as well as learning a lot about the process of applying to university, student finance, and what the music course at Oxford is like. In order to get into the summer school, I had to write a personal statement explaining why I want to study music. Although this seemed quite daunting at first, I had a lot of help from Mrs. Newbery and it was really useful to have some practice as I will have to write my UCAS personal statement by the beginning of October! When considering you for the summer school, as well as your personal statement the university also look at your GCSE grades in respect of how well other people in your year did. Over the week, we were given 3 tasks to complete: an essay, a group composition and a performance. In order to complete the essay we were allowed access to the music library at Oxford, and were also given seminars in topics such as music analysis and music psychology. At the end of the week, we had a tutorial with Oxford tutor Ben Skipp, and we had to read out our essays to him before getting feedback. We also had a composition workshop, where we played our compositions to Dr Guy Newberry, a lecturer in composition, and a performance workshop. However, the timetable was also packed with other non-music activities. For example, we went on a treasure hunt round Oxford, we had a performance by the Oxford Imps and a fancy dress party. We also had lots of help on the admissions process at Oxford, which for music involves 2 essays, an interview, a performance audition and a set of compositions! I really enjoyed the week and would definitely recommend it to all the year 12s this year! You have to be in year 12 to apply, and they offer a wide range of subjects across the six weeks.”

Entrepreneurship

At Renaissance the Partnerships’ vision is to deliver aspirational, creative and motivating enrichment programmes to enhance our students’ academic studies. With this in mind we have already created a full and varied programme again this year with distinguished speakers from all walks of the business and professional world. On Thursday 4th September three very distinguished keynote speakers from Founders4Schools gave a presentation to our sixth form students. Our three guest speakers are business people who have set up and own their own business. One of the speakers sold his company for several million pounds! The speakers talked to our students about their personal journeys and how they set up their business, the importance of having a 5 year business plan and taking facilitating subjects and STEM subjects. All speakers were inspirational and discussed the ‘soft skills’ in the business world. Our students have enhanced their understanding of the development of ‘Expert Student Skills.’ All Humanities and Social Science lessons aim to develop the power of presentation, leadership and persuasive communication skills. It is intended that guest speakers who have been through the process of developing these skills give students a genuine insight into the importance of improving confidence, resilience and continually progressing their professional work ready skills. Please see their website: www.Founders4Schools.org.uk Following this activity our Head of Business Studies, Mrs DeLaune will be introducing Enterprise Week to our students on Friday 19th September.

Study skills A new compulsory part of the AS and A2 programme for Renaissance Students this academic year will comprise timetabled sessions that will develop critical thinking and problem solving. In the first term AS students will learn the value of time management and critical reading and writing skills. A2 students will be working with Mrs Newbery and Ms Pearce to complete UCAS applications and employability skills. Preparation for university study will be facilitated by the Extended Project Qualification

(EPQ). This is an A level qualification that allows students to undertake an independent research project under supervision.

Where are they now? We bid a sad farewell to Dr Lenka McAlinden who left us to pursue her Anthropological interests in Africa where she is engaged in a number of charitable third world projects. She leaves us having celebrated a successful AS year with an 85% pass rate with 50% of students achieving above their target grades! Our new Sociology teacher Cathy Brownjohn will be teaching the A2 Anthropologists this academic year.

A very warm welcome has been extended to Wendy Young who will be teaching our students A level Law and Emma Norman who is covering for Nuria Gomez-Clarke teaching Film Studies.

Last year Karen Pegg left us half way through her AS year to pursue her Olympic aspirations in the field of Taekwondo. She updates us regularly regarding her progress in this highly competitive field of sport. Here

is an update in Karen’s words: “I won another silver medal at the British Open at Stoke Mandeville Stadium yesterday! I won my semi-final 13-1, before losing the final 6-4 to a member of the Great Britain National Team. Absolutely gutted as I came so close, and I was in the lead for a good portion of the match. But that's the way it goes sometimes, I am happy with my performance as I am competing with some of the best girls in Europe and holding my own! I have another competition in Reading in two weeks so hopefully I can make up for the loss there!”

Parking at The Thomas Alleyne Academy

Please note there is no facility for parents to drop off and collect students in the academy car park. There are yellow lines on the road outside the school which renders

this spot a no parking zone and the approach road is extremely narrow and parking here does cause major disruption to our local residents. Please may I ask that if you need to drive to the academy you drop off or collect your child in the North Road or in the bottom of the High Street. Ms M Harris Business Manager

Mind the Gap Kindle Fire

On the last day of the summer term, two of our students were presented with a Kindle Fire as a reward for their year-long efforts in their library lessons. Paige Donoghue and Michael Coffey (pictured here with Assistant Principal Helen Russell) both completed over 15 Mind the Gap reading challenges. Year 7 and 8 students will be continuing with our Mind the Gap reading programme this year where students gain achievement points, a free book and vouchers along the way whilst improving their literacy skills. Full details of the scheme can be found on the Library page of our Academy website. Mrs K Benoy Librarian

Purchasing Lunch at the academy The academy dining hall has moved to cashless system to improve the speed of service through the tills. All students must use their smartcards to purchase food and drink. The best time to top up card is during Breakfast Club between 8 and 8.30 am daily. Please ensure that cards are topped up using the Wisepay system via the academy website. Where this is not possible students can top up their cards using our machine in the dining hall. This machine does not accept 5p, 2p or 1p coins. If you have forgotten your login details please contact us via [email protected] or alternatively call us on 01438 344 344. Charity Fundraising Success

At the end of year assembly in July, Thomas Alleyne’s were pleased to hand over a cheque for £1,174.07 to 'East & North Herts NHS Trust Charitable Fund. Lois Nnanna and Myles Catley, recipients of Head of House awards, handed the cheque to Coral Murphy from the Lister Hospital Magic of Play Appeal.

Coral explained to the students how the money will help improve the experience of young adults needing care at the Lister. The new facilities will include a teenagers’ area with

two PCs and Wi-Fi access for homework and a

sensory space for children who need calming or distracting prior to or post treatment. The money was raised through non-uniform events, bake sales, sponge the teachers, penalty shoot outs, space hopper races and other fun games. Message from County Council Did you know that there are over 1000 children and young people in care in Hertfordshire who need the love and care that many children take for granted? Many of these children have not had the opportunity to experience family life nor had carers to support and nurture them. At Hertfordshire County Council, our recruitment team is searching for people who can become foster carers and work with us to inspire, motivate and nurture these vulnerable children to help them achieve their goals.
