Tulum belongs to the state of Quintana Roo, which was oficially created on May 19th, 2008. It has an extension of 2,040.94 km2 and a population of 28,263 according to the last register on 2010. It comprehends the towns of Akumal, Chemuyil, Javier Rojo Gómez (Punta Allen), José María Pino Suárez, Macario Gómez, Francisco Uh May, Manuel Antonio Ay, Cobá, San Juan, San Pedro, Chanchén, Sahcabmucuy, Hondzonot, San Siverio, Chanchén Palmar,Y axché yY alchén.
The city used to have the mayan name Zamá, that means “Sunrise”, and nowadays Tulum, which its mayan meaning refers to the wall that surrounded it. It’s a cosmopolitan city with people from all over the world that has integrated to the local population, mainly mayan and from several regions of the country.
Tulum’s shield represents the past of the great Mayan civilization, the ecologic surroundings and the projection of this town. It shows the god Ah Mukenkab, the sunset god. On the upper part it has Kukulkan’s temple, crowned by a sun with the mayan numerals.
El municipio de Tulum pertenece al estado de Quintana Roo, el cual fue creado formalmente el 19 de mayo del año 2008. Actualmente cuenta con una extensión de 2,040.94 Km2 y con una población de 28, 263 personas según el último registro del año 2010. Comprende los poblados de: Akumal, Chemuyil, Javier Rojo Gómez (Punta Allen), José María Pino Suárez, Macario Gómez, Francisco Uh May, Manuel Antonio Ay, Cobá, San Juan, San Pedro, Chanchén I, Sahcabmucuy, Hondzonot, San Silverio, Chanchén Palmar,Y axché yY alchén.
Antiguamente la ciudad recibía el nombre maya de Zamá, que significa “salida del sol” (amanecer), hoy en día Tulum, cuyo significado maya hace referencia a la muralla que la rodeaba, es una ciudad Cosmopolita que alberga habitantes de todas partes del mundo, quienes se han integrado a la población local predominantemente maya y de diversas regiones del país.
El escudo del municipio de Tulum representa el pasado de la gran civilización Maya, el entorno ecológico y la proyección de este pueblo. Tiene al dios Ah Mukenkab, el dios descendente o el sol en el ocaso. En la parte superior está el templo de Kukulkán, coronado por un sol con los numerales mayas correlativos del uno al nueve, por el lugar del municipio.

The first archaeological traces date back to 564 AC, but most of the development took place in the Mayan post-classic period between the years 1200 & 1450. The city was inhabited in the early years of the Spanish colony, but in the late sixteenth century was desolated. Later, during the Caste War with the Mayan uprising in 1847 and the birth of the cult of the Talking Cross there was a resettlement of the area and the establishment of a ceremonial center with the presence of rebels.
After many turbulent years, during the presidency of Lázaro Cárdenas the collective memories of the present tulumenses considered the Borges, Caamal, Cámara, Chim and Dzul families as founders of the town, who lived of fishing, agriculture and chicle gum exploitation.
Los primeros vestigios arqueológicos datan del año 564 d.C. Pero la mayor parte del desarrollo se dio en el periodo posclásico maya entre los años 1200 y 1450. La ciudad fue habitada en los primeros años de la colonia española, pero a finales del siglo XVI quedó desolada. Posteriormente, durante la Guerra de Castas con la sublevación maya en 1847 y el nacimiento del culto a la Cruz Parlante, hubo una repoblación en la zona y el establecimiento de un centro ceremonial con la presencia de rebeldes.
Después de varios años turbulentos, durante el periodo presidencial de Lázaro Cárdenas es cuando la memoria colectiva de los actuales tulumnenses consideran a las familias Borges, Caamal, Cámara, Chim y Dzul como fundadores del pueblo, quienes vivían de la pesca, la agricultura y la explotación chiclera.

Además de sus bellas playas, Tulum tiene atractivos naturales como el Parque Nacional Tulum y la Reserva de la Biósfera Sian Ka'an, las cuales son áreas de jungla protegidas más cercanas a la ciudad. En los alrededores puedes encontrar cenotes, manglares y lagunas. Frente a la costa se encuentra el segundo arrecife más grande de todo el mundo.
Su ecosistema selvático permite gran variedad y diversidad de vegetación cuya flora está constituida principalmente por árboles como: chechén, zapote, caoba, cedro, chacah, mangle rojo y blanco, entre otros. La fauna es aún más extensa, llena de gran riqueza de especies marinas y de jungla como: jaguar, ocelote, venado cola blanca, pecarí de collar, coatí, oso hormiguero, tucán, tlacuache, tortuga, garzas blancas, colibríes, zorra gris, murciélago, armadillo, entre otras.
Additionally to its beautiful beaches, Tulum has natural attractions like the National Park of Tulum and Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, which are the closest protected jungle areas to the city. In the surroundings you can find cenotes, mangroves and lagoons. In front of the coast there is the second biggest reef of the world.
Its sylvatic ecosystem allows great variety and diversity of vegetation whose flora is constituted mainly by trees such as: chechen, sapote, mahogany, cedar, chacah, red and white mangrove, among others. It’s fauna is even more extensive, very rich in marine and jungle species like: jaguar, ocelot, whitetail deer, collared peccary, coati, anteater, toucan, opossum, turtle, white herons, hummingbirds, gray fox, bat, armadillo, among others.

SIAN Sian Ka’an (place where the heaven born in maya) is a biosphere reserve, the largest protected area at the Mexican Caribbean. It has an area of 969 thousands hectares between Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto municipalities. In 1986 was established and became part of the program “The Man and the Biosphere” by UNESCO, in 1987 was declared World Heritage by the same organization. The reserve has different ecosystems including low and medium jungles, savannas, a portion of the second longest Barrier Reef in the world and 23 small registered archaeological sites. Sian Ka’an hosts 103 species of mammals and 336 species of birds including a large number of migratory birds, has more than 1,200 species of vascular plants, its beaches are important breeding areas for sea turtles, its wetlands are home to manatees and two species of endangered crocodiles. La reserva de la Biosfera de Sian Ka’an (que en maya significa lugar donde nace el cielo) es la mayor área protegida del caribe mexicano. Ocupa un área aproximada de 969 mil hectáreas entre los municipios de Tulum y Felipe Carrillo Puerto, se estableció en 1986 y se volvió parte del programa “El hombre en la biosfera” de la UNESCO, cuyo reto de conservación era integrar las actividades humanas sin dañar los ecosistemas y cualquier forma de vida dentro de su territorio. Un año más tarde, en 1987 fue declarada por la UNESCO como patrimonio de la humanidad. La reserva cuenta con diferentes ecosistemas entre ellos, selvas bajas y medianas, sabanas y petenes, así como una porción de la segunda barrera de arrecifes mas larga del mundo, además de 23 pequeñas zonas arqueológicas registradas. Sian Ka’an alberga 103 especies de mamíferos y 336 especies de aves entre ellas un gran número de especies migratorias, posee más de 1.200 especies de plantas vasculares, además sus playas son áreas muy importantes de reproducción para las tortugas marinas, sus humedales son hogar de manatíes y dos especies de cocodrilos en peligro de extinción. The floor of the Yucatan peninsula is composed mostly of limestone, which is highly permeable, allowing the formation of underground rivers throughout the country and forming freshwater reservoirs known as cenotes. There are three types: open, semi-open and underground.
The word cenote comes from the Mayan dzonot, which means cave with water and during pre-Hispanic times, many of these cenotes were used as ceremonial and offering centers.Currently they have a recreational and ecotourism use.
Parque Dos Ojos is a flooded cave system located north of Tulum. Flora and fauna are abundant in the park, the road that leads to the clear waters is accompanied at all times by delicate and rhythmic butterflies. Dos Ojos invites you to refresh yourself in the wonderful waters and swim with the amazing play of light and colors that are created here. We have several Cenotes for various activities such as swimming, diving, zip or simply enjoy the tranquility of the area and admire the scenery. Also visit the First Museum of the Ice Age in Quintana Roo.
El suelo de la península yucateca está compuesto en su mayoría de roca calcárea, la cual es sumamente permeable, permitiendo la formación de ríos subterráneos en todo el territorio y formando grandes depósitos de agua dulce acumulada conocidos como cenotes. Existen tres tipos: a cielo abierto, semiabierto y subterráneo.
La palabra cenote proviene del maya dzonot, que quiere decir caverna con agua y durante la época prehispánica, muchos de estos cenotes eran usados como centros ceremoniales y de ofrenda. Actualmente es de uso recreativo y ecoturístico.
Parque Dos Ojos es un sistema de cuevas inundado ubicado al norte de Tulum. Flora y fauna son abundantes en el parque, el camino que guía hasta las cristalinas aguas está acompañado todo el tiempo por delicadas y rítmicas mariposas. Dos Ojos te invita a refrescarte en sus maravillosas aguas y nadar entre el sorprendente juego de luces y colores que se crean aquí. Contamos con varios Cenotes para diversas actividades como nado, buceo, tirolesa o simplemente disfrutar de la tranquilidad del área y admirar el paisaje. Tulum is the only archaeological site that sits at the edge of the sea, it is the most photogenic place in the region and perhaps the entire country. It was a Mayan fortress that lived its moments of glory at the end of the classical period (around 1000 AD). The most iconic of its structure, called "The Castle" is on the edge of a cliff from where the turquoise waters of the sea are appreciated, and whose function was to serve as the main temple and as a lighthouse.
Another important buildings are the Temple of the Frescoes, whose murals portrait a series of supernatural beings living in the underworld which constitute one of the most important examples of pre-Hispanic Mayan mural painting, and the Temple of the Descending God with a small basement where an edifice was built decorated with the image of that deity, principal iconographic element of the city. Temple of the Wind God, a small structure that is in the part that borders the cliff overlooking the ocean is also distinguished.
Tulum es la única zona arqueológica que se asienta a la orilla del mar, es el sitio más fotogénico de la región y quizá del país entero. Fue una fortaleza maya que vivió sus momentos de gloria al final del período clásico (cerca del año 1000 d.C.). La más icónica de sus estructuras, llamada “El Castillo” se encuentra al borde de un acantilado desde donde se aprecian las aguas color turquesa del mar, y cuya función era servir como templo principal y como faro de navegación.
Otra de las edificaciones importantes son: el Templo de los Frescos, cuyas pinturas murales retratan a una serie de seres sobrenaturales residentes en el inframundo que constituyen uno de los más importantes testimonios de la pintura mural maya prehispánica, y el Templo del Dios Descendente con un pequeño basamento sobre el que se construyó un edificio decorado con la imagen de esa deidad, principal elemento iconográfico de la ciudad. También se distingue el templo del Dios del Viento, una pequeña estructura que se encuentra en la parte que colinda con el acantilado que mira al océano.

Experts on the Mayan culture divide their history into three periods: 1.- Pre-Classic Period (1850 B.C. - 250 A.D.) During this period were shaping the traits that give identity to what was the Mayan culture with influences from different cultures. 2.-Classic period (S. III A.D. - S. IX A.D.) The consolidation of culture came, reaching high development in politics, science, art, politic relations with other cultures. Villages become cities.. 3.- Post-Classic Period (S. IX A.D. - S. XVI A.D.) Started a series of events that result in the "Maya collapse" which consists of the removal of political and cultural activities in the main urban centers, of which could not be reset with the same force, ending with the Spanish colonization of the peninsula.
When you talk about mayans, you refer to one of the most important pre-Hispanic cultures in Mexican history, this is because they left scientific and astronomical heritage for the entire world. Contrary to widespread belief, the Mayan civilization never died, or at least not completely, as their descendants still live in the region and many of them speak any of the languages of the Mayan family.
Los expertos sobre la cultura Maya dividen su historia en tres periodos: 1.- Periodo preclásico 1850 a.C. – 250 d.C. Durante este periodo se fueron configurando los rasgos que darían la identidad a lo que fue la cultura Maya, con influencias de diferentes culturas. 2.- Periodo clásico S. III d.C. – S. IX d.C. Se da el florecimiento de la cultura, alcanzando un alto desarrollo en la política, ciencia, artes plásticas, relación con otras culturas. Los asentamientos se vuelven ciudades.3.- Periodo posclásico S. IX d.C. – S. XVI d.C. Se desencadenan una serie de sucesos que dan como resultado el “colapso maya” que consiste en el cese de actividades políticas y culturales en los principales centros urbanos, de lo cual no se pudo reponer con la misma fuerza, hasta la colonización española de la península.
Hablar de los mayas es referirse a la historia de una de las culturas prehispánicas másimportantes de la historia mexicana, ya que su legado científico y astronómico es mundial. De forma contraria a la creencia generalizada, la civilización maya nunca se extinguió, o por lo menos no por completo, pues sus descendientes aún viven en la región y muchos de ellos hablan alguno de las lenguas de la familia mayense.
MAYAN CULTURECULTURA MAYA
El mezcal es una bebida auténticamente mexicana, producto de la fermentación y destilación del jugo del agave. Cuenta con denominación de origen sólo en algunos estados de la república, siendo un producto estrella que se ha popularizado en los últimos años.
Para el proceso de elaboración de mezcales se utilizan 30 especies diferentes de agaves; por cada región y maguey empleados los mezcales tradicionales de México adoptan sus nombres: Bacanora, Sotol, Minero, Arroqueño, Quitupeño, Zihuaquio, Comiteco, Tonaya, Tequila, Papalote, Tobalà, Raicilla, entre muchos otros.
El Tequila es el destilado mexicano más popular en el mundo y una de las industrias más fuertes en el país. Es producto de la fermentación y destilación del jugo derivado de la piña del agave azul, su calidad depende del mosto que se utiliza para la destilación.
Mezcal is an authentic Mexican beverage, product of fermentation and distillation of the agave juice. It has designation of origin only in some states of the republic, being a star product that has become popular in recent years.
For the mezcal making process, 30 different species of agaves are used; for each region and maguey used, traditional mezcal of Mexico adopt their names: Bacanora, Sotol, Miner, Arroqueño, Quitupeño, Zihuaquio, Comiteco, Tonaya, Tequila, Papalote, Tobala, Raicilla, among many others.
Tequila is the most popular Mexican distilled in the world and one of the strongest industries in the country. It is the product of fermentation and distillation of the juice from the blue agave, its quality depends wort used for distillation.

In Maya “temazcalli”, which means house or temple of steam, it is a rudimentary structure construc-tion, which serves as steam bath. The Temazcal is an ancient practice in pre-Hispanic cultures of Mexico, besides the herbal bath, to take a Temazcal in the traditional way, has to be leaded by a trained person (shaman), whom will help us to purify the body and the spirit. Do not miss it!
Del maya “temazcalli” que significa casa o templo del vapor, es una estructura de construcción rudimentaria, el cual sirve como baño de vapor. El temazcal es una práctica ancestral en las culturas prehispánicas de México, además del baño con hierbas, al tomar un temazcal del modo tradicional, se debe llevar una ceremonia guiada por una persona capacitada (chaman), que nos ayudará a purificar el cuerpo así como el espíritu. ¡No te lo pierdas!
