Dear Parishioners, Next weekend we will celebrate our Annual Clambake—our celebration of the end of summer and a return to the routines and patterns of our daily lives. There is much joy as we come to the end of a summer. We look back upon graduations, weddings, Mission Trips, days of vacation or simply time with family and friends. It is important to savor such recollections, for is what life is all about. Such enjoyable reminiscing about the summer gone by does not remove us from the reality of our world. We must face the future with renewed faith and hope. Seemingly daily we hear or read in the news the abuse endured by many minors. We are confronted with accounts of terrible abuse of inno-cence, neglect of duty from those in positions of au-thority, cover ups of “crimes that inflict deep wounds of pain and powerlessness, primarily among the victims, but also in their family members and in the larger community of believers and nonbelievers

alike” Our Holy Father Francis has stated openly to the peo-ple of God—”Looking ahead to the future, no effort must be spared to create a culture able to prevent such situations from happening, but also to prevent the possibility of their being covered up and perpetu-

ated. The pain of the victims and their families is also our pain, and so it is urgent that we once more reaffirm our commitment to ensure the protection of minors and of vulnerable adults.”

This past week we celebrated the feast of St. Augus-tine. St. Augustine is one of the great Fathers of the Church one of the geniuses of humanity, whose influ-ence on posterity has been continuous and profound. He come to the faith through the instruction of St. Ambrose, the Bishop of Milan. The words from the prayer on St. Augustine’s feast day inspired my hope and prayer for our church as we head into the future days, months and years: “Lord, renew in your church the spirit you gave St. Augustine. Filled with this spirit, may we thirst for you alone as the fountain of wisdom and seek you as the source of eternal love.”

May we all seek to be renewed in faith and hope in the midst of difficult times. Fr. Tom

For your consideration during election time… Let your faith be your “Voter’s Guide”. Rhode Island Primary Day is September 12th. Before heading out to your local polling place, take some time to consider all issues that affect our society today...respect of human life, immigration, children and families, and the needs of the weakest and most defenseless among us.

Prayerfully consider the candidates and the issues.

Catechetical Sunday September 16, 2018

"Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ." Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful oppor-tunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on

the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as

a community of faith.
