Corvette “Court” - Merchandise – No report from Bruce Unger, but he did show the new “yellow”, which is actually more “golden rod”. CSCC LOGO Use Parameter – Vicki reported that due to perhaps absent mindedness the board had again tackled the subject of LOGO use. In keeping with the By-Laws, the Club colors remain black and yellow. The Club LOGO can only be put on black or yellow shirts. All Shirts embroidered at Cole Promo must be purchased at Cole Promo. Treasurer’s Report – Anita Smith reported on the state of the budget and current reserves. Garage Night August 24 at Steve and Anita Smith’s After a false start the week before due to threatened rain, August 24 turned out to be a beautiful evening for a gathering. Anita held up her end of the evening by recruiting Larry Valentine to be the grill master. Steve, meanwhile, was somewhere in eastern Kansas on the way home with a new truck. I am not sure who was having more fun. Thank you, Anita, for hosting an evening with all of the important components.

Keystone Weekend Continued

Pagosa Springs Car Show and Rallye Sept 15

th, 2018

The weekend started with a couple different caravan groups on Thursday and Friday. While it was sad to see the damage caused by the fires along the route, it was exciting to see the beautiful colors already changing where there had been no fires. The weather…well, I just don’t think it could have been much better. Clear skies made for amazing viewing of the hot air balloon launches ALL over the city. It also made for near perfect driving conditions for the rallye. We ended up having 20 cars competing in the poker rallye, and full houses were again dominant for poker hands. With 7 full houses, Tom and Vicki Ury had the best hand of Aces over 2s. Second place went to Mike and Winnie Bochnak with Kings over 4s. Third place went to Briana and Hadley Richardson (Pagosa Springs residents) with Jacks over 3s. Walt and Nancy Jenkins took home the final set of trophies with 10s over Kings.

The beautiful weather continued for the car show that was held at the Pagosa Inn and Suites hotel. 22 Corvettes entered in the show and, as always, we created quite the traffic slowdown as cars passed by the show on Hwy 160. With some tight scoring, the people picked their favorites. Leading the pack was Lynn and Melody Munyon’s 1954 (Pagosa Springs residents); then Mike and Winnie Bochnak’s garnered 2

nd. Just a few votes separated 3

but 3rd

officially went to Alice and Jacob Lester with their 2013, and 4th

went to Dan and Jan McCarty and their 2017.

There were also 2 special awards. Chester’s Choice and the Grand Champion. Chester is the owner/manager of the hotel and his choice/trophy was given to Mark Bishop and his Daughter Rachael. The Grand Champion award was given to the team with the best combined score from the Rally AND Car Show, and that award went to Bochnaks.

Congratulations to ALL the winners and participants. By Tom Hoeppner

Get to Know Your Fellow Members

An Interview with Jerry and Diane Stermer by Diana Dittman

How long have you been a CSCC member? Since August of 2007 What Corvette(s) do you currently own? A 1993 40

th

Anniversary edition Marital Status? Been married for 54 years How did you meet? They met through a mutual relative (by marriage). Jerry’s cousin married Diane’s Uncle. It was 1963 and Diane was at a family party spending time with her Aunt and Uncle. Jerry was invited to the party. They went on a date at the end of that week. They married after a year of dating. Where are you from? They are both from Placerville, CA, born and raised there. They were then stationed in Germany and San Diego. They moved to Colorado Springs in 1984. Employment? Jerry was going to school and driving a truck when he got drafted. He then soon enlisted in the Army for 3 years. He became a pilot and flew for Pacific Southwest Airlines for 19 years. He now works at the Air Force Academy as the director of the Test Cell Facility where rockets and jet engines are tested. Diane worked in sales at Macy’s, then became their bridal consultant. She worked as an administrative assistant until the kids came along. Once the kids were in school she became a teacher for 8 years. She taught Kindergarten, 1

st, 2

nd, and 3

rd grades. She then was a

receptionist and is now an executive administrative assistant to the head pastor at Pulpit Rock Church. She has been there for 30 years. Kids? They have two daughters. One lives in Alaska who is an art teacher and shows her art paintings. The other daughter lives in Colorado Springs. They have 3 granddaughters, 2 grandsons, and one great grandson.

Favorite club activity? They both enjoy the cars shows and trips to Pagosa Springs. They really remember the trip to Pagosa Springs in 2007 when they drove through, fog, hail, and sleet to get there. (I remember that too!) Hobbies? Jerry enjoys racing. In fact, in the early 1960’s he owned and ran an AA fuel dragster and was the first to hit 200 mph. back in California. (Wow!) He also enjoyed flying. Diane loves spending time with her family. She enjoys her Corvette. ( a gift from Jerry for their 40

th anniversary).

What is the best vacation you ever took? When they were stationed in Germany, in 1967 and 1968, they toured Italy in their 1952 Volkswagen. They camped along the way and had a great time. They also enjoyed a trip to Switzerland. What is your dream corvette? Diane says her dream Corvette is the one she has! Jerry says his is the 50

th

anniversary edition Corvette. How did your love of Corvettes come about? Jerry always loved Corvettes and passed that along to Diane. Anything else you would like to add? They have enjoyed meeting some great people in the club and making great memories. Thanks for the interview, Jerry and Diane!

Blower use The next time your wife is away for the day, here’s a win-win tip that works every time. Tell you wife that you feel energetic and that while she is away, you are going to dust and vacuum the entire house. After she leaves, open all the windows, including the doors and garage door as well. Grab that leaf blower and have at it. You should be able to clean the entire house in less than 10 minutes—that’s dusting and vacuuming! I recommend a battery-powered blower, as you don’t have to deal with that long cord. You can use a gas-powered blower, but your wife will accuse you of bringing the motorcycle into the house again. Start at the top, doing things like the curtains and window sills, and those cobwebs in the light fixture you see every time you sit and look up. Be careful around lamps and especially those knick-knacks your wife loves so much. Have a friend hold those table lamps by each end and you can get the shades spinning at a pretty good clip. I’ve got it down to 7 seconds flat. Work your way to the end of the house that has the open window in it. It might take a little more time if you have long shag carpet. Don’t forget under the beds—what a great invention! Now put those pictures back on the table where you think they might have been and leave the house, you’re done! You can screw off the rest of the day or get in nine holes and get a ton of credit for a big job well done. Win-Win! I’d leave the windows open as long as possible. Oh, and you can use that same blower to dry your Corvette. Don’t get the nozzle too close to the paint, keeping it more than 6” away. Also, use the blower only if you washed it with a soft rag or sponge (not just a spray wash), otherwise you could have a noticeable dirt film after a few washings. I use it to flush out the nooks and crannies and then final wipe. Never blow or spray anything against the edges of that expensive clear bra so many of you have. If it lifts, dirt will get in and it will be ruined. Tip:

For a great bug remover mix equal parts of water and your favorite car wash detergent into a spray bottle. Spray it on and let it soak for half a minute or so before lightly rubbing your bugs off. Label the bottle. In fact, you should have a label on every liquid bottle in the house. If it should spill or be ingested you’ll know right away if you should worry.

HIGHLIGHTS:

NCM’S 24TH ANNUAL CELEBRATION As I write this month’s column, I’m just back from a very enjoyable Labor Day trip to Bowling Green KY, where I joined a most congenial crowd of fellow Corvette Museum fans to celebrate NCM’s 24

th year.

While time limitations at CSCC’s September 6th meeting precluded

me from presenting details of the weekend’s many exciting events, I’m pleased to share a few highlights with you here! Among an extensive lineup of seminars, the most informative and intriguing one I attended was given by Corvette Assembly Plant engine-building personnel. Displaying prolific knowledge of Stingray engines, they assembled a complete LT5 ZR1 engine in the NCM conference room, while answering all our questions along the way. The LT1 (base model), LT4 (Z06), LT5, and LTA (Cadillac) engines are assembled at the Bowling Green Plant, each by one person from beginning to end. The LT4 and LT5 engines can be assembled by a new owner when ordering a Z06 or ZR1 Stingray by selecting the engine build option. Other seminars featured Chevrolet personnel discussing statistics for the 2018 models, successful racing activities, and conducting a “walk around” of the 2019 Stingray models, including both ZR1 coupes and convertibles. I, of course, took the opportunity to sit in both models, finding the ZR1 very impressive, especially the convertible. The Corvette Hall of Fame is always a big hit. I was honored to be photographed with some of the Hall of Famers, who cheerfully obliged my requests for autographs. All 19 Hall of Famers attending the event were eager and willing to discuss all things Corvette, and what a treat to talk at length with three past Chief Corvette Engineers: Dave McClellan, Dave Hill, and Tom Wallace. The 3 new Hall of Famers, Burt Greenwood (brother John Greenwood passed away in 2018), Tom Wallace, and Mike Yager gave seminars, relating more information and facts about their careers than one can find in the literature. A group seminar with all the 19 Hall of Famers revealing particular Corvette experiences was terrific. The past GM personnel noted they had to be “rebels” in the Chevrolet family to keep the Corvette brand alive during hard times for GM. We really owe them our thanks for all they did to keep Corvette from dying. There’s so much more I’d be happy to talk with you about before or after a club meeting if you’d like. And I encourage all of you to go to next year’s once in a lifetime celebration of the Museum’s 25

th

Anniversary. There will be more Corvettes there than you can count! Join the national caravan and secure your hotel room now from a Caravan Captain (see below). At the Ambassadors’ lunch I was recognized as a Master Ambassador, among about 20% of the Museum’s ambassadors awarded this. Thanks, CSCC for your support of the Museum… it’s

an honor to serve as CSCC’s NCM Ambassador! NCM REGISTRATION 25

th CELEBRATION It’s often referred to

as the world’s largest moving automotive event, held once every 5 years. On-line registration opened September 12, 2018. Registration will close 60 days prior to the event. For Colorado registration, contact Keith Bennett to register for the caravan at [email protected]. RAFFLE I’ll have $10 tickets for an Arctic White 2019 Stingray Coupe at the October meeting. The drawing will be held February 7, 2019.

My team is committed to providing you with an excellent sales, service, and parts experience. Stop in or call anytime…we are here to serve you! Sincerely, Michael Manning, General Manager Daniels Long Chevrolet 719-228-3528
