Fourth Sunday of Advent (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

HE SHALL BE PEACE (MI 5:4)

Amid a frantic world that worries over so many things—violence, war, destruction, famine, the effects of the pandemic, to name a few—the prophet offers us a word of comfort: “He shall be peace,” one of our deepest desires. Not absence of conflict, but true peace. The peace that only God can give.

Two things we should contemplate from today’s gospel: Mary goes “in haste” to help Elizabeth (cf Lk 1:39). Our Blessed Mother sets an example for us; we should not delay in doing good and helping others. Time is short and the need is great. The other is what Elizabeth says to her: “Blessed are you who believed” (1:45). Blessed indeed! Mary’s faith in the message of the angel has brought about our salvation.

Advent comes to a close; Christmas is near. Let us prepare our hearts to receive the One who will be peace by imitating the Blessed Virgin’s love and generosity. May Jesus’ gift of peace be in your hearts as we eagerly await His coming. Come, Lord Jesus!

ÉL MISMO SERÁ LA PAZ (MI 5,4)

En un mundo preocupado por tantas cosas—la violencia, la guerra, la destrucción, el hambre, los efectos de la pandemia, solo por nombrar algunos—, el profeta nos ofrece una palabra de consuelo: “Ël mismo será la paz”, uno de nuestros mayores deseos. No la ausencia de conflicto, sino la paz verdadera. La que solo Dios puede dar.

Debemos contemplar dos cosas del evangelio de hoy: María va “presurosa” a ayudar a Isabel (cf Lc 1,39). Nuestra Santísima Madre nos da el ejemplo: debemos hacer el bien de prisa y ayudar a otros. El tiempo es corto y la necesidad es mucha. Lo otro que debemos contemplar es lo que le dice Isabel: “Dichosa tú que creíste” (1,45). ¡Dichosa en verdad! La fe de María en lo que le dijo el ángel nos ha traído la salvación.

Pronto termina el Adviento; la Navidad está cerca. Preparemos nuestros corazones para recibir a Aquel que será la paz, imitando el amor y generosidad de la Santísima Virgen. Que el don de la paz que Jesús nos trae esté en sus corazones mientras esperamos ansiosos Su venida. ¡Ven Señor Jesús!

May the Lord be with Deacon Frank as he ministers to our parish, and with Deacon Enzo as he prepares for his ordination to the priesthood. On Christmas Eve there will be a Family Mass at 3:30 pm as well as the usual 5:30 pm. Only the 5:30 pm Mass will be live streamed. Please sign up as for Sunday Mass. The annual Christmas Eve concert will be held on December 24 at 11 pm, followed by midnight Mass. Masses on Christmas Day will be at 10:30 am and 5:30 pm in English and at 12:30 pm and 7 pm in Spanish. The 10:30 am and 12:30 pm Masses on Christmas Day will be live streamed. Make sure to sign up as for Sunday Mass. El concierto anual de Nochebuena se celebrará a las 11 pm del 24 de diciembre, seguido de la misa de medianoche. There will not be a morning Mass on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2022. The only Mass on New Year’s Day will be that of the vigil for Sunday, January 2, at the regular time, 5:30 pm. The “O” AnTiphOns

The O Antiphons, also known as The Great Os are Magnificat antiphons used at Vespers of the last seven days of Advent as well as the alleluia verses on the same days in the Mass.

They are referred to as the "O Antiphons" because the title of each one begins with

the interjection "O", and each one names one of the attributes of Christ mentioned in Scripture. They are:

December 17: O Sapientia (O Wisdom) December 18: O Adonai (O Lord)

December 19: O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse) December 20: O Clavis David (O Key of David)

December 21: O Oriens (O Dayspring) December 22: O Rex Gentium (O King of the nations)

December 23: O Emmanuel (O With Us is God)

The exact origin of the O Antiphons is not known, but their use was prevalent in monasteries and it may be concluded that in some fashion the O Antiphons have been part of our liturgical tradition since the very early Church.

The first letters of the titles taken backwards appear to form a Latin acrostic “Ero cras” which translates to "Tomorrow, I will be [there]". Therefore, the Lord Jesus, for whose coming we have prepared in Advent and whom we have addressed in these seven Messianic titles, now speaks to us: Tomorrow, I will come. So the O Antiphons not only bring intensity to our Advent preparation, but bring it to a joyful conclusion.

Las antífonas de Adviento, también conocidas como antífonas mayores, o antífonas O (por la letra con la que comienzan) son antífonas utilizadas en la Liturgia de las Horas, durante las vísperas de los últimos días de Adviento, y forman el verso del Aleluya recitado antes del Evangelio en la Misa de los días de semana entre el 17 y el 23 de diciembre. Cada antífona es uno de los nombres de Cristo, uno de sus atributos mencionados en las Escrituras. Son:

Se desconoce su origen exacto, pero su uso en los monasterios era frecuente y podemos concluir que de alguna manera las antífonas de Adviento han sido parte de la tradición litúrgica desde los primeros tiempos de la Iglesia.

Las primeras letras de los títulos leídas en sentido inverso forman el acróstico latino «Ero Cras», que significa «Mañana, yo vendré», y reflejan el tema de las antífonas. Así Jesús, para cuya venida se han preparado los cristianos durante el Adviento y a quien se dirigen con estos siete títulos mesiánicos, les habla ahora: Mañana vendré. De este modo, las antífonas de Adviento no sólo infunden intensidad a la preparación del Adviento, sino que lo conducen hacia su alegre fin.
