PWDCC Board of Directors and Officers 2005
Wishes of a warm and welcoming Summer! Here is hoping that you have been fast enough
all spring to catch those muddy feet before they run into your house reminding us that days
of clean snow and the winter months are now gone. I've now begun to realize that easy-to-
clean tile in the house has been one of my best investments thus far!
With the months of May/June we mark the start of the spring/summer competition season.
To welcome it with ready and eager dogs, our membership has been hard at work setting up
various clinics, seminars and workshops. You will no longer have an excuse for not having at
least JWD (Junior Water Dog) title following your dog's name. In the east on June 11th there
was a Beginner Water and Stewards camp in Ariss, Ontario and in the West on June 18th
and 19th the Alberta Portuguese Water Dog Club hosted a Junior/Apprentice and Apprentice/
Working Water and Stewards workshop in Buffalo Lake, Alberta.
As a club we should take great pride in not only being involved in hosting such events but
encouraging members and new PWD owners to take part in our activities. For PWD's, past and
present, working in water is a natural fit. Water work is exciting and easy for new PWD owners
to take part in as any healthy dog over the age of 6 months who has shown a desire to swim
(in and out of the water dish) and has basic obedience (basic retrieve and recall) can partake
in a water workshop with great enjoyment of both dog and handler.
If you are unsure if your dog is quite ready or if you feel you are looking to learn a little
more before jumping in feet first, come out and watch in amazement our breed's eagerness,
intensity and strong swimming and retrieving abilities. Our second PWDCA sanctioned Water
Trial is scheduled for August 13-14 in Ariss Ontario under Judge Charles White, see page 13
for more details.
Go try it out!

When Clipper came up to Canada and won 2 Best in Shows
it was no fluke. BIS Can/Am Ch Driftwood’s Scheming
Calypso, ‘Clipper’, is the top winning Portuguese Waterdog
in AKC history. Owned by Bob and Vanessa Gorman and
breeder Morgin Powell, she has won eight Bests in Show
(under seven different judges) and 38 Group Ones handled
by Morgin and Don Powell. With over 130 group placements
from 86 judges, she is number 11 in Working Group in the
U.S. this year and moving up.
Her breeding (sire, Ch Driftwood’s Danger Zones CD and
dam, Ch Driftwood’s Rising Phoenix) is the result of nearly
20 years of Morgin’s breeding program to produce well-
structured, healthy, spirited dogs.
Just seeing Morgin at a show, bawling at ringside as one
of her veterans again proudly shows his stuff, or on her cell
phone offering advice on puppy manners just before getting
ready for another big show, you can’t doubt her passion
and commitment. Congratulations to Morgin, Don, Bob and
Vanessa and the entire ‘Clipper team’ on your number 1
ranking in Canada for 2004.

Hogan and Lorraine
Dream it, Live it, Achieve it…I am writing this article toencourage all of you to Dare toDream… whatever you canimagine you and your PWD cando… together… you can! That is
what Hogan (Can/Am Ch. Ondulado’s
Hogan CDX1, AgN, AWD, SROM) and
I did when we started our performance
partnership almost 7 years ago.
Hogan and I started with puppy classes
and before we knew it we were training
at Campaign Dog Academy, a top school
for competitive obedience. Shortly
thereafter we completed our Novice
Obedience title and just this month
completed our CDX(Open ) title. The
foundation this established has paid
off in spades as we progressed to
additional working fields such as water
work and agility.
Conformation was our next endeavour.
I decided to learn to show Hogan myself
starting with handling classes at CanDo
Obedience School. I never would have
thought I would enjoy “prancing around
the ring” like the handlers in the movie
“Best in Show” but there we were…
and having a blast. We have never
looked back, with Hogan finishing his
Cnd Championship, American
Championship (handled by Julie Parker)
and a highly successful specials cam-
paign culminating in 2004 (Hogan’s
retirement year) in which I handled
Hogan to a #3 PWD ranking in Canada.2
I am now thoroughly enjoying handling
and completing Cnd Championships with
the PWD’s of my friends, many of which
were sired by Hogan.
Water work came next and it is our true
passion. Hogan “leaps for joy” when I
take out his gear bag. He knows it is
time to go to water practice or a trial.
With the help of my water work buddies
in W.A.D.E. and especially Cathy Gadd,
Hogan and I have progressed to working
on our 2nd title level, which we hope to
complete this summer. Along the way
we took a little detour into agility-
obtaining some great coaching from
Sue Miller that enabled us to obtain the
Novice CKC agility title in 2 weekends.
You may be wondering why I so strongly
encourage you to get out there and
do stuff with your PWD… 2 reasons…
1. the bond you develop with your
canine companion through this is
immeasurable …you truly become a
team… 2. You get the chance to meet
the most fabulous people.
It goes without saying that no dream
can be accomplished alone. In addition
to the folks mentioned above I owe
special thanks to Cathie Sockett –
Ondulado Kennels, (Hogan’s breeder),
Julie Parker (handler) my water training
partners (W.A.D.E.) and a long list of
folks that have been so helpful and
supportive along the way.

The health of our dogs is important to thehappiness of our dogs and our happiness too. What could be more important? You can help.
The Portuguese Water Dog of America has recently approved
funding for a comprehensive global study of our breed.
Dr. Margaret Slater of the Texas A&M University will be con-
ducting the study among PWD owners. Dr. Slater and her
research team have conducted such studies among breed clubs
since the 1980’s – they have completed over 20 such studies.
The PWDCC has been approached with a view to participating
in this extremely important study. All purebred dogs have
health problems; Portuguese Water Dogs are no exception.
The PWDCA recognizes the need for more information on
diseases that affect our breed. This is best accomplished by
conducting a quality survey.
The primary objective of the survey will be to understand
the frequency and pattern of occurrence of health related
conditions of Portuguese Water Dogs and causes of death.
The secondary objective will be to relate physical traits, diet,
environment and personality of individual dogs to certain
diseases and longevity. The survey results will be shared with
the PWDCC.
All PWDCC members will be receiving the survey and a letter
from our President. Please make the time to complete the
survey and return it in the envelope provided, which will be
addressed directly to Dr. Slater.
Confidentiality is absolutely guaranteed. There will be no
requirement for you to give your name, the names of your
dogs or the name of the kennel. There will be no way of link-
ing your answers to your questionnaire with you individually.
Help us to help you and the health of our breed. Please
complete the survey when you receive it. The success of the
survey depends on a high rate of participation. The health of
our dogs depends on us.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who
put together the booth as well as took
time out during the long weekend to
come out and support the club. If you
have a chance next year, I highly
recommend coming to this show. There
are a great number of great exhibits and
even savings on products for our pets.

CGN and Rally-O EventSaturday April 30
CGN Event The afternoon of Saturday
April 30 found 16 PWDs ranging in
age from 8 months to 5 years, with the
majority being around 2 years, getting
ready to show that they were Canine
Good Citizens.
The dogs were evaluated individually,
except for the Supervised Isolation,
which was done in small groups. Our
PWDs strutted their stuff through all
of the 12 exercises, and at the end of
the day 13 of the 16 entered earned
the right to have the initials CGN
after their name. This is a high rate
of qualifiers, and the only reason the
3 did not pass this time was due to
immaturity and over exuberance.

From OntarioAll About Pets ShowMarch 25th-27th, 2005
My husband Jim and I have gone to this
show in the past simply because we
loved dogs. This year, we were fortunate
to be involved in manning the PWDCC
booth on the Friday (our schedules were
full the rest of the Easter weekend).
We were pleasantly surprised to see such
a great turnout – both by the event
attendees and the exhibitors.Needless
to say, the two pups we brought, Venus
and Persie, were basking in all the
attention that they received being petted
by hundreds of hands passing through
our booth as well as any passersby
whenever we walked with them outside
the booth. Many people are recognizing
the PWD and we found that most people
would call our breed out by name rather
than ask what type of dog we had. This
breed is already loved by many.
Although a bit biased (they are the best
type of dog around), we had no trouble
talking about the countless joys of
owning a portie. Our booth with all the
wonderful pictures and ribbons
displayed, showed off our beloved breed
proudly. And of course, the wonderful
volunteers who brought their four-legged
family members to the show also did a
wonderful job of educating others on the
PWD. The Parade of Breeds must have
attracted thousands as the bleachers
were full of people (I have to admit that
this made me quite nervous but I just
followed my dog's lead as we walked
around the ring and showed them off).
There were many cheers and the dogs
just loved it.

Rally-O On Saturday April 30, 2005
The Portuguese Water Dog Club of
Canada hosted a Rally Obedience
(Rally O) seminar at Campaign Dog
Academy in Georgetown, Ontario. The
seminar included a lecture followed
by a practice session conducted by
Anne Harvey, a long time instructor at
Campaign Dog Academy. Anne intro-
duced The Canadian Association of
Rally Obedience (CARO) to participants.
Rally-O was developed so that dogs
can earn titles in a sport that focuses
less on precision and more on
attitude; the mantra of Rally-O is “just
gotta have fun.” Sixteen Portuguese
Water Dogs/handlers took part in the
morning’s activities.
Rally-O is designed so that dogs at
all levels of training can participate.
A beginners course consists of a
sequence of 20-22 obedience exercises
that flow into one course. Competitors
are evaluated based on the quality of
the performance and against the clock
with the average course taking between
3-4 minutes.
All the participants had a great time
learning something new to do with
their PWD’s.
Cindy Berube, Mississauga Ontario
Our evaluator Marci Jameson was very
impressed by the behavior of our dogs,
as the attached excerpt from her letter
attests.
"Thank you to the members of the
PWDCC for inviting me to evaluate
theirmany fine dogs at yesterday's
CGN test. I was impressed by the
number of dogs and handlers that
qualified. If your group is typical of the
breed in general then I would say you
are on to a good thing, but of course
you already know that. I did not detect
one bit of aggression in any of the
dogs presented, and out of a group
of 16 members of one breed, that is a
laudable quality.”
The dogs were well presented and each
had the most endearing expression
and alert and intelligent brown eyes.
I left feeling that I had 16 new friends
in the dog world. (32 if you count
the handlers) Thanks again for allowing

Cover PupHi my name is Koda. I live with a great family that has
5 active and caring people in it. When I go on walks to watch
kids play soccer lots of children
run up to me to say hello and
pet me. I love the attention!!
I won the award for top puppy
in the puppy training classes.
I am very proud of this as I
really enjoy doing cool tricks for
people and I get really tasty
treats when I do them. Now that the weather is getting
warmer, I play in my back yard with my friends, running
around like crazy. I particularly like running through the tulips
and eating the flowers. I am not so sure I should be doing
that ? though. I really like meeting new people and other dog
friends. If you see me out and about, be sure to say hi and
stop to rub my belly as I really like that. Love Koda.
Koda is part of the Watt family, Graham and Denise with
children Jacqueline, Sarah, and Alex. All live in Mississauga.
