Laura’s final words made Becky remember that, for herself, 1873 was a long time ago. She glanced around without success, searching for the strange, glowing beetle that had apparently brought her here and changed her appearance. I guess I’m still supposed to learn some more, she thought.
“Gee.” Becky sighed. “That’s a shame. The way you described the caisson, I really wanted to see it.”
“You may change your mind when I tell you the rest,” Laura said, frowning. “We still don’t understand what caused it, but many of the workmen became sick after working in the caissons. Their joints ached, and their stomachs hurt. Because of the way that many walked in a bent over position to ease the pain, some people jokingly said that they had ‘the bends.’ It wasn’t funny at all, however. Fifteen workers died from the affliction.”
“Why didn’t you get the bends?” Becky asked.
“I probably wasn’t down there long enough. I only went on one tour. We’re hearing that they have similar problems building the bridge between Manhattan and Brooklyn in New York City. They are also using caissons, and their workers are similarly experiencing what their physician has named ‘caisson disease.’ Their chief engineer, Washington Roebling, became incapacitated himself from too much time in the caisson.”
“How horrible! Did they have to stop building the bridge?”
“His wife, Emily Warren Roebling, took over his tasks, learning both engineering and politics to carry on. She’s done a wonderful job, especially since we women are generally bypassed for such roles.”
“I sure hope that women will be able to do anything they want to in the future,” Becky agreed.
“Well, one bridge at a time,” said Laura. “Another first for the St. Louis and Illinois bridge is that the spans are being raised without using any falsework.”
“Falsework?” Becky asked.
“That’s another word for temporary supports, usually wood in this case, that would prop up the partial spans until they can join them together. Once that connection is made, the arch is able to hold itself up.”
“Why aren’t they using falsework, then? It sounds reasonable to me.”
“That’s an interesting story. As you know, St. Louis is a river
town. We have lots and lots of steamship captains that make their living moving goods up and down and across the river. The steamship industry saw a bridge as a threat to their business, so they lobbied the United States Congress to pass a law regulating river bridges. Their hidden intent, of course, was to make the rules so restrictive that no bridge could be built.”
“That must have been some set of rules.” Becky said.
“Henry Flad, Mr. Eads’ first assistant, recommended using cantilever construction sitting on top of the piers and abutments to support the spans. Falsework would block boats from traveling on the river, but the cantilever supports the spans from high above, leaving plenty of room to navigate. Speaking of Mr. Eads, here he comes now!”

Create colorful Easter eggs
Beautifully colored Easter eggs are a beloved holiday tradition. In many cultures, eggs rep-resent new life, fertility and rebirth. For Chris-tians, the Easter egg is symbolic of the resurrec-tion, or the eternal life, of Jesus Christ. The practice of coloring eggs and of-fering them as decorative items is embraced during both secular and reli-gious Easter celebrations. Many fond memories
and traditions are tied to Easter egg coloring, and some people may have
their preferential kits or practices to achieve beautiful eggs. But em-bracing some new tips and tricks can produce beautiful eggs and make this beloved tradition even more fun.• Begin with firm, hard-
boiled eggs. Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil. Then use a large spoon to gently lower the eggs into the water. Lower the heat to maintain a simmer and boil for just about 12 minutes. Transfer the eggs to a bowl with ice cold water and let them cool. Allow the eggs to cool completely before coloring.• Lay out newspaper or
an old tablecloth to soak up any spills. Spills are inevitable, so don’t let them spoil the fun. In ad-dition, empty egg cartons make ideal drying racks, so do not discard them. • Make patterns or other
designs on the eggs. Use a white crayon to draw on the egg directly. The dye will not stick to the wax. Or use string, rub-ber bands, tape, stickers, or other items to create your pattern. Dip the egg and then remove the ma-terials afterward to reveal the design.• Swirl a few drops
of food coloring into shaving cream on a flat surface. Roll the eggs into the mixture, let dry, and then gently clean to remove the excess shav-ing cream. The result is a marbled effect.• Recognize that you
don’t have to “dye” eggs at all. Use a sponge to dab on a design. Strips of tissue paper can be adhered to the egg with glue or shellac. Children may enjoy submerging the egg in glue and then coating it in glitter. The potential to create
creative Easter eggs is limitless. Embracing new strategies can set this year’s eggs apart.

Valley ShopperHow occupational therapy can help people live with arthritis
Occupational therapy may sound like something exclusive to people who are injured on the job. Though occupational therapy helps people in the workplace every day, it also helps men and women, including those with arthritis, perform ev-eryday activities that may or may not be work-related.
Arthritis can take both a physical and financial toll. The Arthritis Foundation notes that it’s difficult to determine just how many people currently suffer from arthritis, as treatment often isn’t sought until symptoms become severe. Conserva-tive estimates from the AF suggest 54 million adults in the United States currently have arthritis, though the organization reports that a recent study suggested as many as 91 million might be dealing with this painful inflammation and stiff-ness of the joints. As if the pain from arthritis weren’t enough, the condition also can cause financial problems for those who cannot work or only work part-time, with annual medical costs and earnings loss estimates in the hundreds of billions of dollars.
Occupation therapy can
help people with arthritis overcome their conditions. The American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc., notes that most joints have the potential to develop arthritis, which can affect mobility, cause pain and even lead to deformity. However, the AOTA¨ also states that OT practitioners aim to help people with ar-thritis maximize their ability to participate in activities like work or recreation while striving to help patients en-hance their quality of life.
Because there are more than 100 different types of arthritis, men and women diagnosed with the con-dition can benefit greatly from individualized care. One-size-fits-all solutions may not work for arthritis sufferers, who can benefit from one-on-one interac-tions with OT practitioners. For example, the AOTA¨ notes that OT practitioners may recommend personal-ized adaptive equipment to patients with arthritis who are experiencing pressure and discomfort in their hands when holding or working with objects. Before making such recommen-dations, OT practitioners may analyze patients’ daily activities to ensure they get equipment that will provide the support and relief their specific condition calls for.
Arthritis is a global concern that the Arthritis Foundation estimates will only become more preva-lent in the decades to come. Occupational therapy can be just what arthritis sufferers need to overcome their con-ditions and improve their quality of life.
