Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

STARS FOR OUR TROOPS

CAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, re-move the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a remind-er that You are not forgot-ten.” The Stars are given free-ly to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded War-riors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Vet-eran Hospitals. Well, April is as fickle as ever. We can have sunshine and 70 degrees or 25 degrees and snow. Experienced gardeners are used to the unruly nature of April weather and have learned to adapt. I don’t mind the cool weather since it will hold things back a bit. Root growth occurs when soil temperatures are low and, when it finally does warm up, the plants will have a good, strong root system, and they’ll explode into growth with plenty of moisture available. A lot of us managed to use the warm moments a couple of weeks ago to get our beds cleaned out and our lawns raked. I find that the cooler days are a great time to work outside since you don’t get overheated and there aren’t any pesky mosquitoes to drive you crazy. Someone recently asked me why there aren’t any products that had lawn food, crabgrass preventer and weed killer in one bag. The gentleman thought this would be a great idea since it would save a lot of time. His question reminded me that there is a lot of confusion about the differences between weed killer and crabgrass preventer. Let me try to straighten this out. Crabgrass, unlike most lawn weeds, grows from seed that the mother plant produced the previous summer. The mother plant dies completely over the winter never to be seen again. In early spring (starting about now) the seed germinate and start to grow. Crabgrass preventer is an agent that dissolves and forms a coating on the surface of the soil. ANY seeds that try to sprout and push a root through that barrier are killed. The best way to time your application of crabgrass preventer is to keep an eye on a forsythia bush growing in your yard or neighborhood. You MUST have your crabgrass preventer applied before the flowers have completely fallen off the forsythia. It is a convenient coincidence that crabgrass seeds germinate at the same time that forsythias are flowering. Spring weather can be fickle but, if you use the forsythia as your clock, your crabgrass preventer will always go on at the right time. Remember that crabgrass preventer forms a thin film on the surface of the soil so make sure that all your raking is done before you apply it. If you rake afterward, you will scratch up the barrier and crabgrass will be able to grow. Dandelions, plantain and other lawn weeds are perennial plants. They come up from a root system that was established the year before and they survive the winter. Because they are coming up from roots not down from seeds, they are immune to the effects of crabgrass preventer. Lawn weed killers do not prevent weeds, they kill existing weeds. Weed killers (liquid or granular) are basically plant growth hormones that, when applied at the proper time, cause the weed to die from the shock that occurs when the weed tries to grow faster that it is able to. Sort of like an overdose of stimulants. If weed killers are applied too early in the season (when nighttime temperatures are below 50 degrees) they will not kill the weeds. During the cool days and nights of early spring, the weeds are not growing rapidly enough for the growth hormone to cause the level of shock necessary to kill the weed. Every June, people complain that the weed killer they used is “no good” or “doesn’t work”. The real reason it didn’t work is because it was applied WAY too early. Sure, you can look out in the yard and see those buggars out there growing but it’s too early to get rid of them unless you want to dig them out. Bide your time and strike when the iron is hot (or when the soil is warmer). The best time to apply weed killers will be during late May or early June. If you apply it sooner, you are wasting time and money. Another important thing to remember about weed killer is that they are absorbed ONLY through the leaves of the weeds. Because of this, weed killers MUST remain in contact with the leaves of the weeds for a minimum of 24 hours (48 is best) for the weed to absorb enough to be killed. Many who use liquid weed killers will soak and soak an area to be sure they get the weed killer into the soil. Any weed killer that isn’t actually touching the leaves is wasted. Since leaf contact is the name of the game with weed killers, don’t mow the lawn prior to applying weed killer. If you mow, you’re removing the leaves that absorb the weed killer. Keep an eye on the weather and make sure that you don’t apply weed killer when rain is expected within 48 hours after the application. Even a quick shower is enough to wash the weed killer off the leaves, rendering it ineffective. REMEMBER, PREVENT CRABGRASS NOW BUT WAIT TO WAGE WAR ON THE WEEDS. Thanks for the read.

The number of women in leadership roles in both politics and business contin-ues to rise. According to the Pew Research Center, the percentage of United States Senators who are female has risen from just 2 percent in 1965 to 20 percent in 2015. A similar spike has taken place in the United States House of Representatives, which is now 19.3 percent women compared to just 2.3 percent in 1965. State legis-latures have also witnessed the growing role of women, as state legislatures, which were just 4.5 percent female in 1971, are now 24 percent female. Fortune 500 com-panies have also increas-ingly turned to women to fi ll leadership roles. In 2014, 5.2 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs were women. While that fi g-ure is still low, it’s certainly an improvement over 1995, when no Fortune 500 com-pany employed a female as its CEO. Fortune 500 com-panies are also increasingly relying on women to serve as board members, which were 16.9 percent women in 2013 compared to less than 10 percent in1995. Women also are getting more oppor-tunities to lead on college campuses than they were roughly 30 years ago, when just 9.5 percent of college presidents were women. By 2011, that fi gure had nearly tripled to 26.4 percent.

· Varying wear: Tires should exhibit the same type of wear. The wear on front tires and back tires may diff er, but one front tire should have the same amount of wear as the other and the same goes for the back tires. Un-even tread on tires indicates that the tire with more wear could be about to go out.

· Worn tread: Even driv-ers who know little about cars can typically recognize when tire tread has worn down to the point where the tire is a safety risk. But driv-ers who are unsure can em-ploy the quarter test. Insert a

quarter into the tread of the tire, with George Washing-ton’s head upright. If you can see the hairline of the United States’ fi rst president, then you need to replace the tire. Perform this test on each of your vehicle’s four tires.

· Low pressure: Drivers who do not routinely check their tire pressure are more likely to endure a fl at or blowout than those who regularly make sure their tires are at the manufacturer-recom-mended pressure, which can be found in a vehicle owner’s manual or by call-ing the tire manufacturer

or visiting their website. An underinfl ated tire is under stress that can cause the tire to blowout. In addition, poorly infl ated tires force en-gines to work harder, which negatively aff ects a car’s fuel effi ciency.

· Vibration: A car that vi-brates excessively may do so because tires are damaged. Poor suspension is another cause of excessive vibra-tion. Whatever is behind a car that is vibrating, drivers should immediately take the car to their mechanic for an inspection.

· Physical damage to the tire: Sometimes tires exhibit physical damage like bulges or cuts, and such signs could mean a fl at tire or blowout is just around the corner. Tires that exhibit such physical damage need to be replaced immediately.

Flat tires and blowouts can prove both scary and incon-venient. Drivers who want to avoid such problems should routinely inspect their tires for indicators that a fl at or blowout is likely to occur.

The cost of fuel dipped in 2014, but drivers are still look-ing for ways to spend less at the pump. For many drivers, that means driving less. Driv-ing less will save money, and doing so also reduces fuel consumption and contrib-utes to fewer emissions en-tering the air, both of which can benefit the environment.

But many drivers are unable to drive less, as commitments to work and family require them to get behind the wheel more often than they might prefer. Such drivers may be looking for ways to reduce their fuel costs, and fortu-nately there are several ways to do just that.

· Reconsider your choice of fuel. Many of today’s auto manufacturers now design their vehicles so they can run smoothly on regular un-leaded gas, which is typically

listed as “87 octane” at filling stations. That’s important to know, as regular gas is often considerably less expensive than alternatives that are higher octanes. Many drivers may even choose regular un-leaded, but opt for premium gas every third or fourth trip, feeling that the higher octane fuel every so often will in-crease performance of older engines. But many engines are designed to run smoothly and efficient on low-octane fuel, meaning it’s unneces-sary to choose premium gas, even if you only do so once in a blue moon. Read your vehicle’s owner’s manual to determine the best fuel for your car.

·Buy when the time is right. Prices at filling stations fluc-tuate on a daily basis, so un-less your car is running on empty, avoid filling up when

the prices seem especially high. Some patience may pay off with several dollars in savings, and those savings can add up to a significant amount of money over time.

· Become a less aggressive driver. Drivers with hectic schedules tend to be more aggressive when behind the wheel. But driving aggres-sively is unsafe and poten-tially costly. When driven at speeds that exceed 55 miles per hour, vehicles lose fuel economy. According to the California Energy Commis-sion’s Consumer Energy Cen-ter, driving 55 miles per hour instead of 75 miles per hour can reduce fuel costs by as much as 75 percent.

· Remove unnecessary weight. A car trunk might seem like a great place to keep your golf clubs, and it may be tempting to leave that

roof rack on top of your car af-

ter a recent camping trip, but

such unnecessary cargo in or

on your car makes it harder

for the car to get from point A

to point B. That forces the car

to consume more fuel. Unless

your immediate plans include

hitting the links or hunkering

down at a nearby campsite,

remove unnecessary weight

from the car so your next trip

to the gas station is less ex-

pensive.

The cost of fuel can make

trips to the filling station into

costly excursions. But drivers

willing to reconsider conven-

tional wisdom and change

their driving habits can save

substantial amounts of mon-

ey over time.
