A Word from the Pastor

God’s promises. Fulfilled.

At this time of year, the signs of God’s activity in our lives, in our church, and in our world seem especially clear. As we approach Thanksgiving, we’re aware of the many blessings which God has given us. We rejoice as we think of family and friends, work and leisure, creation outdoors and cozy indoors, faith received and faith shared.

Immediately following Thanksgiving comes Advent, the season of preparation for Christmas. Once again, we are reminded of God’s blessings. Each week as we light the candles of the Advent wreath, we celebrate God’s gifts of hope, peace, joy, and love—gifts which attain their fullness in the birth of Jesus, the Christ-child, in Bethlehem.

For hundreds of years, God prepared the people of Israel for the birth of his Son. God sent prophets to teach the people of his promises—prophets such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Micah. Each one brought a message calling on the people to turn back to God, and renewing the people in hope.

Those ancient teachings were not just for ancient times. They are meant for us today: to call us back to God; to give us hope.

During the weeks leading up to Christmas, our Advent worship services will provide an opportunity to focus on four of these promises from the prophet Isaiah and to reflect on their meaning for our lives today. We will look at God’s Christmas promises of light (Isaiah 9:2-7), forgiveness (Isaiah 40: 1-11), guidance (Isaiah 60: 1-6), and peace (Isaiah 11: 1-9).

Then on Christmas Eve, we will celebrate the birth of Jesus, as we hear the reading of Christmas story from the Bible, and watch the drama unfold, and listen to the music & the message, and join in the singing of the carols & the lighting of the candles.

God’s promises. Fulfilled.

May the worship services and celebrations of the coming weeks fill your heart with God’s message of love and hope and joy, Pastor Dan

Step Up To The Plate – Stewardship Campaign 2010

Our 2010 Stewardship Campaign is well underway. Boxes decorated as ball fields are traveling from family to family. Each family is asked to find their designated envelope, prayerfully consider their pledge for the year 2011, and return the completed pledge card to the box before passing it on to the next household.

It is SO important for us to fill out a pledge card, doing our best to increase yearly giving. Last year’s income for our bare-bones budget didn’t keep up the expenses and you will note that this year doesn’t look much better.

So it’s time to Step Up to the Plate. Each of us must take our turn to help make it a winning season for our church and this year’s Stewardship Campaign.

Janet Clingerman and the Stewardship Team

****Middle School Youth Group

We have once again had an amazing start to our youth group year. We have 42 active members this year! What a blessing!! We started off with our annual Spaghetti Dinner and Pie Sale, which were a great success. The group also enjoyed a lot of fun filled activities, such as the X-treme Water Zone Picnic and a trip to the Corn Maze. On a more serious note, the Confirmation class attended a Synagogue service and on another night, we explored what Worship was all about! Thanks to Ken and Kim Dobbin, they added so much to that evening with some terrific praise music!!

It is now that time of year when we start to focus on giving thanks and the birth of our Savior. With that, we have lots of events planned to celebrate this happy time of year. Advent, Caroling and a movie about “Peace on Earth” during wartime are some of the things we will explore.

The Middle Schoolers wish everyone a Joyous Thanksgiving and a Blessed Christmas! Have a happy and safe holiday season!

Vacation Bible School 2010SonQuest Rainforest

If you read our article last month, you will remember that on Wednesday evening each child released a balloon with a tag that read: "God so loved the world that he gave us his one & only son so that those who believe in him will have everlasting life" John 3:16. This was done to spread God's word & love out into the world. We received one response and here is the letter we received:“Hello:

I believe I found something that belongs to you. I found the enclosed balloon and message laying in the field beside my place of employment in PERKINSVILLE, VERMONT on Friday, August 27, 2010.

I had just received some sad news about a family member and I took a break and went outdoors for some air. I was walking along in the grass and the balloon caught my eye. When I bent down to pick it up the bible verse was on top. A sign? Maybe.

So your balloon traveled many miles and lifted my spirits.Thank you. Mary, Springfield, VT”

Share The Blessing

There was a time when the ancestors of everyone living today depended on candles or lighted lamps for light. That small flickering flame was the difference between the darkness all around and a light by which to see. We became aware of this recently when the miners in Peru were trapped in darkness for weeks. They knew the meaning of a light for the darkness. The candles we use in the church are symbolic of the light for the darkness before Christ was born. The altar candles are also symbolic of the Holy Spirit in the sanctuary during worship service as shown on the UMC cross and flame.

At Christmas we use many candles for the Advent Wreath, the altar and for the Christmas Eve service when we each receive a candle that we may bring light to the world. You may share the blessing of light with a donation to the cost of candles. Gifts may be sent to the Church Office, PO Box 369, North Rose, NY 14516 or place in the offering plates marked for candles.

November & December Office Schedule

Our church offices will be closed from Saturday, November 6 through Sunday, November 14, and from Saturday, December 18, through Sunday, January 2, for our church secretary’s vacation weeks. Melissa Taber (our pastor’s office assistant) will be checking e-mail and answering machine messages weekdays during these weeks; she will be glad to answer your office questions.

Pastor Dan Will Be Away

Pastor Dan will be on vacation, beginning Sat., Dec. 25, and continuing through Sat., Jan. 1. If you need a pastor when Dan is away, please contact our Visiting Ministry Team Leader: Carol Agnew (946-4093).

Worship Team Update

We have $700 designated for organ/piano tuning in our budget. In addition to this maintenance item, much needed repairs are needed to keep our organ in good working order. If a separate service call were to take place, these repairs could exceed $1,000. However, the organ repair service has agreed to do the repairs during the regular scheduled maintenance, which brings the total bill (including regular maintenance) down to $850.98. Still, this exceeds our budget by over $150 and we still need to have the pianos tuned.

If you feel led to donate to this additional expense, please send a check to the church office and designate your gift for “organ repairs” or simply put your gift in an envelope and drop it in the offering plate with a clear designation on the envelope.

Thank you,Ken DobbinWorship Team Chair

2010 Financial Update

The income of tithes and offerings from January 1 through October 15, which support the general operating budget, were $103,107. Operating expenses totaled $120,978, leaving a shortfall of $17,871. Please consider making an extra contribution beyond your usual giving to help make up this deficit. Everyone’s help is greatly needed. If you have questions, please contact Lucinda Collier, Finance Team Chairperson.

Angel Tree Project 2010

Our annual Angel Tree Project will begin shortly and we would like to invite you to be a part of it.   There will be gift tags and a sign-up poster for food and health and beauty items displayed in the sanctuary in late November.  Please help local, needy families enjoy a brighter Christmas by purchasing these items and returning them to the church by Friday, December 17.  Our congregation helped 12 families (64 individuals) in 2009, and we hope to increase that number this year.

Thank you your help with this important mission project.  Feel free to contact Lori or Greg Peck at 587-9766 or [email protected] with any questions.

Christmas Decorating

We will be decorating our church sanctuary on Sunday, November 21 after the church service.  Everyone is welcome to help with this preparation for the Advent season.  Please come and help, stay for as long as you can - probably around an hour.  Snacks will be provided.  If you have any questions, please call Cinda Collier (587-2224). This year we would also like to put up some outside lighting.  If anyone would be willing to help with this, please let Cinda know.  Merry Christmas!

Christmas Prayers and Meditation—Joseph

Here’s something else that will help you & your family to reflect on meaning of Christmas. This year, our focus will be on “Joseph,” as a figure of Joseph will be traveling throughout the homes in our parish. Each family is invited to keep this figure for a day and place it in a central place in your home—perhaps on your kitchen table. Take time to think about Joseph’s life and what you can learn from him during this Christmas season. Write down some of your reflections in the accompanying travel diary (journal) then pass it on to another household in your area, perhaps someone you don’t know very well. (The three areas will be north of route 104; south of route 104 & east of route 414; south of route 104 & west of 414.) “Joseph” will continue his journey through Jan. 1. (Please return them to the church office by Jan. 3.)

Christmas Letters

Do you send a Christmas letter to your family and friends? Pastor Dan especially enjoys reading these; he would appreciate receiving one of yours.

Christmas Books

Are you looking for a good book to share with your children during Advent? Do you know where the best selection of religious Christmas books in Wayne County can be found? Check out our church library, down-stairs in the Fellowship Hall, beginning the 1st Sunday of Advent, Nov. 28. There are also Christmas videos available. All books may be borrowed for two weeks by signing them out on the clipboard or computer.

Coming Events:

Sun., January 9 – 10:30 a.m.– UMW Officers Installation; 11:30 a.m. Church Undecorating

Snow Shovelers Needed

As snow season approaches, help with Sunday snow shoveling at the church entrances will again be needed this year. (Attention youth: this counts toward community service hours.) Please sign up for a Sunday… or more if you are able. Sign up is on the information table in the Fellowship Hall.

Many thanks, Board of Trustees.

If anyone would like to be added to the prayer chain (by phone or by e-mail), please e-mail Melissa Taber ([email protected]) or leave a message for her on the church voice mail (587-9544).

We appreciate Carol Agnew heading up the prayer chain e-mails/calls for the past several years—through her dedicated leadership, our whole church family has remained connected in prayer.

Thanks for your prayer support!

Attention: Parents & Students— Letters of Reference or Recommendation

One of the joys of being a pastor is writing letters of recommendation for college admission, scholarships, or job applications. (After all, I have been the pastor of our current high school seniors since they were 4!)

There are a few things which will help me with this responsibility: I need to know at least a week ahead (preferably longer). In case of last-minute emergencies, I’ll try to

fit it in, but I can’t promise it. I need a brief résumé (it doesn’t have to be fancy), which lists your work experience, volunteer

experience, school & community involvement, leadership positions, awards/honors received, etc. I need a stamped, addressed envelope to mail the recommendation to the proper recipient.

Thanks for your help with this! God’s blessings with your applications, Pastor Dan

Wesley Thrift Shop

We are very thankful for the response that we received from our church family to help work at the shop and help sort. Also a thank you to Barb Anthony for donating a foot stool for our shoe department.

The shop will be open during November on Fridays (9am-4pm) and Saturdays (9am-3pm). During December, we hope to be open on Thursdays (9am-3pm) also. Each week, we sort on Wednesday mornings (9am-12Noon). The donations of items and clothing seem to be non-stop which creates a new inventory each week.

This year, we plan to set up for Christmas on two evenings – Nov. 15 & 16 (6pm-8pm), so if you are available to help and want to get in the Christmas spirit, drop in.

If you have any questions, please contact: Pat Densmore (594-8231), Gladys MacIntyre (587-9338), Carol Mattice (243-3053), Renee Poole (587-9910), Ginny Robinson (587-2196) or Adell Stanbrook.

Altar Flowers

Each week, our altar is enhanced by fresh flowers. Thanks to Kurt and Sue Manske for making this possible every Sunday. As is the case with all ministries, there is a cost involved. The cost for the altar flowers is $25 each week. If you would like to donate to this important ministry, you’ll find a sign-up sheet outside the church office. Thank you. Ken Dobbin, Worship Chairperson - 587-9750 (evening) or 594-2263 (9-5 weekdays).

Newsletter

We have found that all the church news tends to flow through the church office; therefore it was decided that it would enhance our church communications to have Melissa Taber take responsibility for our church newsletter in her role as Pastor’s Office Assistant.

If you have articles for future issues of The Wesley Dispatch, they can be e-mailed to Melissa directly at [email protected]. We publish the newsletter every other month. The deadline for articles is the 15th of even-numbered months. We appreciate your help in writing articles about ministries & events you are leading.

Faith Home

Each month, we list weekly activities that you can enjoy together as a family to help all grow in faith.

Nov. 7: Plan a special surprise for a veteran or a veteran’s widow to celebrate Veteran’s Day on Thursday.

Nov. 14: The National Day of Listening is Friday, Nov. 26. Choose this day or another time this month to listen to a family member or friend tell a story about their life. For more information and ideas, see www.nationaldayoflistening.org.

Nov. 21: Work together as a family to fill out this Thanksgiving prayer:

Thank you God, for ______________________________________________________________.

It’s amazing, How you provide _______________________________________________________________.

And each day, I see ______________________________________________________________.

I N this moment, I am reminded _____________________________________________________.

The Knowledge that you love me helps me to _____________________________________________.

I am Surrounded by people who _______________________________________________________.

Oh God, ________________________________________________________________________.

In your grace, I can ________________________________________________________________________.

EVerything I do _________________________________________________________________.

I pray for _____________________________________________________________________.

Nov. 28: What would make your family’s Advent/Christmas preparations more spiritual? Talk together about a plan for focusing on Jesus’ birth during the coming month.

Dec. 5: Be “Secret Angels” this week. Every family member draws the name of someone else in the family and then secretly does special things to help & encourage them.

Dec. 12: Talk about who are the loneliest/saddest people that you know personally. As a family, how could you share Christmas love with them?

Dec. 19: Set up a family nativity scene, or draw pictures of the stable at Bethlehem the night Jesus was born and hang them up in your home.

Dec. 26: During this week of vacation, pick a Christmas book or video to share together as a family.

Jan. 2: Begin the New Year with God’s Word. Find a Bible your family can use and highlight (or use “Post-it Notes”) a helpful verse each day this week. If you keep on with this project, soon you’ll have a great spiritual resource for when you’re seeking guidance.

Cary & Sharon Miner- Featured Friends of North Rose United Methodist Church

Today we are proud to have Cary and Sharon Miner as our Featured Friends for October. Sharon was born in May of 1955 and went to grade school in Fair Haven and grew up most of her life in Sterling on a farm as an only child with her parents Charles and Priscilla Guinup. After grade school Sharon attended Red Creek High School and graduated in 1974. Sharon worked her first job at Douglas Farms picking apples and cherries. Sharon later worked at North Rose Wolcott as a cleaner for 25 years.

Cary was born in September of 1953 in Newark and went to grade school in Marion until he was 14 years old then came to Red Creek in 1969. In Wolcott he lived on a horse farm with his parents Emerson and Beatrice Miner along with his sister Ellie. Cary has two girls from his first marriage; Kathy Miner Darling and Jeanne Miner Eygnor. Sharon considers both the girls like her own daughters.

Sharon and Cary attended Red Creek High School together but their future reconnected them in 1975. Cary was driving down the road and saw Sharon walking. He offered to give her a ride and never left her go after that. They had gone their separate ways but both discovered that they were meant to be as high school sweethearts. They were married on March 26th, 1977 and had a daughter together; Lisa Miner Potter. Cary worked for 8 years at Ultra Life as a cleaner.

Both Cary and Sharon became members of the NRUMC on October 21, 2007 and are active in the adult Sunday school. Cary always gets the classroom ready for class and also has served as shuttle van driver for the Lake Bluff Service. Sharon is a member of the United Methodist Women’s group and both help out in projects like the Rummage Sale set up and clean up for dinners and are also part of the visiting ministry team. Cary has been head usher and Sharon has been projectionist as well as both of them serving as greeters. They bring their grandchildren whenever possible and it is such a joy to have them as part of our church family. Thank you Cary and Sharon!

New Church Member

Margaret (Anthony) Rising Fontaine has transferred her church membership back home to NRUMC from Fall Branch UMC, in Tennessee. She recently moved to Parkwood Heights in Macedon. Margaret grew up on Miner Rd. She is the sister of Marlene Ellis, Bob Anthony, Lee Anthony, and Linda Tompkins. It’s a joy to welcome you back home, Margaret!
