Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD. -Isaiah 2:3

He shall judge between the nations and shall arbitrate for many peoples;

they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation,

neither shall they learn war anymore. -Isaiah 2:4

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction,

so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement

grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and

Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. -Romans 15:4-5

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

-Romans 15:13

~ The Preparation for the Word ~

PRELUDE Nun danket alle Gott, BWV 657 Johann Sebastian Bach

*CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP AND OPENING PRAYER

The congregation is invited to join in the singing of the Psalm refrain at the invitation of the director.

The earth is the LORD’s and all that is in it, the world and those who dwell therein. For the LORD has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. Refrain

Who may ascend the mountain of the LORD, and who may stand in God’s holy place?

Those of innocent hands and purity of heart, who do not swear on God’s being, nor do they pledge what is false.

They shall receive blessing from the LORD and righteousness from the God of their salvation.

Such is the generation of those who seek You, O LORD, Of those who see Your face, O God of Jacob. Refrain

Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O everlasting doors,

that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory?

The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O everlasting doors,

that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory?

Truly, the LORD of hosts is the King of glory! Refrain

* The congregation may stand

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Great and wonderful God, we come to You with our prayer of confession. We are sorry for the many things that we have done that are wrong in Your eyes. We are sorry for all the things we should have done but we didn’t do. We ask for Your forgiveness for these things, and for other things that we might have done wrong that we don’t remember or even know we have done.

Please forgive us. In Your name, we pray.

ANTHEM Never Forget to Be Thankful Natalie Sleeth

(Refrain) Never forget to be thankful for all of the gifts you receive, for God is the source of your blessings and that you can truly believe. 'Twas God who made the earth and sky, creatures who multiply, fish that swim and birds that fly way up high! (Refrain) 'Tis God who finds us when we stray, makes the rules we should obey, gently leads us on our way, day by day. (Refrain)

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;

He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Coffee Hour: Please stay after the service to enjoy fellowship and refreshments in the Narthex. We thank today’s Coffee Hour hosts Ned Cooling and Craig Ollenschleger for their hospitality.

Visitor Information Packets are available in the Narthex. If you are visiting with us today, please feel free to take one.

Music Notes: Our first hymn, long a favorite for harvest-time, is especially appropriate for Christ the King Sunday, the last Sunday in the Liturgical Year, when we celebrate Christ’s reign while at the same time know that on the following Sunday, we look toward Christ’s return. Both text and tune of the hymn were written in the mid-19th century. The author of our middle hymn was a consultant for the Presbyterian Church in mission work in the mid-20th century, specializing in communications. The musical form of the English hymn folk tune is a familiar one, AABA, and is modal in nature, evoking both a minor and a major tonality. Our

final hymn, the quintessential Thanksgiving hymn, was written during the Thirty Years’ War. Martin Rinkart penned the first two verses based on Ecclesiasticus 50:22-24, and added the third verse as a Trinitarian Doxology, a hymn of praise to God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Johann Crüger’s tune was also written in the first half of the 17th century, and is the tune on which today’s prelude and postlude is based.

Natalie Sleeth, author and composer of the Carol and Chapel Choirs anthem, offers a reminder that everything we have is a gift from God, for which we should

be thankful. The Boys, Chapel and Covenant Choirs (“BCC”) anthem by Hal Hopson

further explores God’s gifts to us. The offertory anthem is a movement from Pachelbel’s setting of Now Thank We All Our God, sung in the original German. Like last week’s Chancel Choir anthem, the well-known melody floats in the soprano voice over an intricate motivic development by the alto, tenor and bass voices.

Worship Values, Practices and Information

Congregational participation is the hallmark of Reformed Worship. Hymns,

responses, corporate prayers and readings belong to you, the people and express

the voice of the individual and the larger body of the Church. We hope the

following notes will help you to join us in our liturgy.

An asterisk (*) indicates the congregation may stand.

Boldface type signifies congregational participation.

First and final stanzas of hymns are usually sung in unison, middle stanzas in

parts.

Share your prayer concerns on the cards provided in the pew rack. Ushers will

collect the cards during the announcements.

Those arriving after the Call to Worship begins will be seated during the next

hymn or the passing of the peace. If you must leave the Sanctuary during

worship, please wait in the Narthex until the next hymn, the passing of the

peace or the doxology before returning to your seat. Please help us protect

and care for our beautiful worship space. Food and beverages, with the

exception of closed plastic water bottles, are not allowed in the Sanctuary.

Please turn off your cell phone and pager before worship begins.

Large print bulletins and hymnals are available in the Narthex.

Assistive listening devices are available by contacting one of the ushers.

Throughout the Sanctuary, there are a number of spaces available for

wheelchairs. An usher will be happy to direct you.

Video of the service is available online at www.westside.org. We have live

streaming video on Sunday mornings.

In case of emergency: our AED Unit is on the wall across from the reception

desk and the First Aid kit is in the closet across from the reception desk.
