Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,

Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above,

Join with all nature in manifold witness

To thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Thomas Chisholm, 1925

Dear Friends,

As summer begins, I am reminded once more of how great is God’s faithfulness—to me, to my family, to

this wonderful church family. One of the reminders of that great faithfulness is the wheat field that I drive by as

I come to the office each day. Back in the springtime it was just green leaves but with the sunshine and the

rain, with nourishment and nurture, the wheat is growing into tall, mature plants. As the seasons continue to

change, I look forward to seeing the “amber waves of grain” and anticipating the harvest time of fall. Yes,

morning by morning I am reminded that each day is full of God’s mercies and the above words often come to

my mind.

Those words are from the hymn “Great is Thy Faithfulness” which was written by Thomas O. Chisholm,

who was born in a log cabin in Franklin, Kentucky in 1866. Mr. Chisholm suffered from ill health for most of his

life, leaving him in poverty and pain. But, yet, he was able to see God’s mercy and love in nature and in his

own life. He was particularly fond of Lamentations 3:22-23 and the words of the hymn come from that scripture.

Even as so much around him was changing, even his own body and life circumstances, he found the

changelessness of God anchored him and nurtured his faith and hope. He wrote: ”Great is Thy faithfulness, O

God my Father, there is no shadow of turning with Thee; thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not, as

thou hast been thou forever wilt be.”

Over the past year, this parish has faced some challenges, some sadness and disappointments; but

during this time God’s mercies have sustained and nourished you. Over the past year there have been some

significant changes; but, the changelessness of God has anchored you in faith and hope. Great is God’s

faithfulness!

Over the summer months, I hope that we can rest a bit in God’s mercies and love. One of God’s great

mercies indeed is rest. God’s own self rested and God commanded his people to rest. So, in the coming weeks

we will not have too many scheduled events; we will just enjoy that “easy living” of summertime.

The Rev. Judith Foster Reese Interim Rector

But, rest doesn’t mean failing to gather together for worship and praise. The God of great faithfulness is

worthy of all our praise and thanksgiving! Likewise, rest doesn’t mean falling behind on the pledges that we

have made to God. Our church operates every month of every year and your pledge is important to that

operation, especially as we prepare for the rector search process.

During the first three weeks of June, I will be at the School of Theology at the University of the South

working on my Doctor of Ministry degree. This will be my last class! I’m very excited for the professor is Dr.

Amy Jill Levine, who is an Orthodox Jew and professor of New Testament at the Vanderbilt Divinity School.

I’m also excited that Kellie Mysinger, who is a postulant in the discernment process for Holy Orders, will

be preaching on June 7th. Recently, Kellie did an internship at the church in Glasgow and it will be wonderful

to welcome her to the pulpit of her home parish. I’ll be coming home on the weekends and really looking

forward to hearing the good Word that Kellie will share with us.

Yes, great is God’s faithfulness to all of us at Christ Church! Each day brings new mercies and new

opportunities to sing God’s praise and serve the Lord Jesus.

May the changing of the seasons bring you new mercies each day and new opportunities for faith and service.

And, may the blessings of the Almighty God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit bring you “strength for today and

bright hope for tomorrow!”

Judith+

Kellie Mysinger In 1994, my husband, Paul, and I moved to Bowling Green and became members of Christ Church. Over the

years, I have had the opportunity to serve with many talented, faithful people in this church community. The

experiences I have had teaching youth Sunday School, being a member of the vestry, serving as a chalice

bearer and lector, helping with stewardship and capital campaigns, learning about faith and service in EfM

(Education for Ministry), and sharing the many joys and pains of life with the Christ Church community have

helped challenge and nurture my faith in many ways.

More than two years ago, I began a formal discernment process to explore whether I was being called to

ordained service in the church. This process has included meeting with a discernment committee here at

Christ Church, meetings with the diocesan Commission on Ministry, attending the Diocese of Kentucky’s two

year School of Ministry, and a six month internship with the Rev. Suzanne Barrow, serving both St. Andrew’s

Episcopal Church in Glasgow and The Presbyterian Church in Munfordville.

At this time, with the approval of the Commission on Ministry, Bishop White, and the discernment committees

of Christ Church and of the Glasgow and Munfordville congregations, I am a postulant for the diaconate in the

Episcopal Church. The coming months will include additional prayer, discernment, and training – supported

and guided by the diocese and the Christ Church community. I am thankful that I am in the midst of such a

wonderful, supportive Christians, and I ask for your prayers as this discernment continues.

The 78th General Convention - 2015

The business of The Episcopal Church is conducted during triennial General

Conventions. The Convention is a bicameral legislature that includes the House

of Deputies, which has more than 800 members, and the House of Bishops,

which is comprised of nearly 300 active and retired bishops. Each diocese

elects, at one of its annual meetings, up to four clergy and four lay deputies to

attend the General Convention, take part in its deliberations and vote on

resolutions.

The Convention has the authority to amend the Constitution and Canons of the

Episcopal Church; adopt the budget for the church for the next three years;

authorize liturgical texts and amend the Book of Common Prayer; adopt communions and covenants with other

churches; set qualifications for orders of ministry and office-holders; elect officers of the General Convention,

the Executive Council and members of boards; and delegate responsibilities to the committees, commissions,

agencies and boards of the Episcopal Church.

The next General Convention will take place June 25-July 3, 2015 in Salt Lake City, Utah. This will be an

especially important General Convention as the next Presiding Bishop will be called by this Convention from

four nominees. There also will be important decisions regarding the re-imagining of The Episcopal Church.

This is the work of TREC – the Task Force for Re-imagining The Episcopal Church. There also will be reports

from the Task Force on the Study of Marriage and their work on “What Makes a Marriage Holy?”

Please keep the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies in your most fervent prayers as they do this very

important work.

Preparing for General Convention

God, Grant your blessing on all who join in this General Convention.

By your Spirit give them grace to listen and grace to speak.

Help them to discover where you are leading this church.

Give us all a unity in mission that will enable the church by its life and witness

to fulfill the ministry you have entrusted to us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Special Side Benefit of YOGA at CEC

Every Tuesday afternoon, a group of faithful yoga students meet

together at Moore Hall for an hour or so of breathing, movement, and

quiet meditation. We practice leg stretches, back bends, and

sometimes balance on one foot in our individual interpretations of

trees. And, we head home feeling calm and refreshed.

But, as a group, we find that we can do even more. Each week, a few

students drop a few dollars into our donation basket which are added

to our little yoga account. And, over time, that account grows. We have used some of the donated money to

purchase props like blankets and blocks to use in our classes. But, our goal is to accumulate amounts to share

with those in need.

In 2013, we sent a gift to a Buddhist monastery in northern India to pay for jackets

made by local workers for the young boys who live and study at the monastery.

Last month, we sent $700 to Doctors Without Borders to support their efforts in

Nepal following the devastating earthquake the Nepalese have experienced. While

our gift is just a drop in the bucket, we feel that we are making a difference with our

group gift.

We are exercising more than our bodies. We are exercising our hearts as well. As

Christ has taught us to do. Leslie Weigel
