ello and welcome to the 2nd edition of the BOURNE Scene ( I managed to spell it correctly this time).

The first edition was very well received and I got lots of positive feedback and useful comments about what you would like to see in the magazine. The most common factor was that you would like to know more about ‘What’s On’ in and around the town. So

this month we have put together some information about events and it would be really helpful if you could forward any details on events that you are involved in, so that I can

include them in the next edition – deadline for this is the 5th of every month.Also included in this issue is a feature on Bourne Market and ghostly happenings around

Bourne. There are some great gift ideas, a motoring review on the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO, as well as the really useful directory of local numbers.

How far would you go to raise money for charity? Give me a skydive or bunjee jump any day,

but running? Not much hope there, I’m afraid. As someone both unfit and lazy, I have the utmost respect for those who challenge themselves physically and mentally to help others.

But it’s inspiring to know that even those who dread the gym as much as I do have the stamina not only to enter but to also complete the Great North Run - the ‘world’s most popular half marathon’. With over 51,000 people entering the race this year, it was the runs biggest event so far, and local man Paul Lingwood was there every step of the way. “I hated sports at school, if I could get out of it, I would. I even kept the same sick note for a whole term!” confesses Paul, who works for a family-run interiors business in Peterborough, “but after my sister got a place in the London Marathon last year, I started doing a few long runs with her to help her train.”

But it wasn’t until Paul went to watch his sister compete in the Marathon that he realised his true running potential. “I saw that there were all shapes and sizes taking part, and that really inspired me. From that moment on, I started looking

into the Great North Run. I’m passionate about supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, so I thought it would be a worthy way to raise money for them.

“On the day, the weather was awful, but as we set off the sun began to shine and the atmosphere was brilliant.” But from then on, the challenge really began. “I didn’t know there would be so many hills; there aren’t many to train on around here, so the last hill on the course was a killer. Then just as I could see the finish, the heavens descended and it chucked it down all the way to the end!” But Paul says he couldn’t have even got that far without the support from his family. “They’re the best supporters - without the love and understanding from them, I don’t know how I’d do it. My legs are still in pain but only 24 hours after the run, I’ve already agreed to run the Perkins Great Eastern Run in Peterborough to raise more awareness for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.” So perhaps my running career still has a chance - despite my initial reaction to running, according to Paul, all I need are good supporters and a worthy cause. Now all I need to do is dig out my leg warmers...

For over 700 years, the Thursday market has been bringing fresh produce and a vibrant social scene to Bourne town centre. But as the recession grips the British countryside, this gem in Bourne’s crown looks under threat of closure as crowds dwindle and head to supermarkets further afield.

With the Burghley Arcade looking more sparse than ever after the closure of Budgens, Andrew’s butchers and Deep-ing Travel,fruit and veg trader Bill Pauley (whose family have been stallholders for 62 years), tells me of the drop in trade.

“We’re usually a bit quiet at the end of the summer but by now we’re normally a lot busier again. Ever since Budgens left the precinct we’ve been getting quieter, and with Tesco opening soon I don’t know what’s go-ing to happen.”

But Bill feels that his products are more than good enough to compete with those on offer at bigger supermarkets. “Our products are sourced locally and they’re really fresh. The products on offer today were picked and bought yesterday, so you can’t get much fresher!”

Fellow trader Jackie feels that not only is it the products on offer that make the market special, but the customers’ loyalty: “If you treat people well, they look after you.”

After dealing in Bourne for 19 years, Jackie clearly has a reliable and happy clientelle.

Somewhat ironically, the saviour of the market may be in the new opening of the Co-operative store, filling the void left by Budgens’ departure. “These new supermarkets are a threat to us, but the Co-op will bring more customers to the precinct,” says Jackie, “and Tesco will bring new customers to Bourne, as well as keeping current customers in the town” - which means more business for the market. She heeds, “All I can ask is that people use the market more often - don’t forget us.”

While some believe that the death knell for the market is not far around the corner, I am of the opposite opinion. We cannot afford to lose the market, neither economically nor socially - the market is a cost-effective and more community-friendly way to shop. In the same way that charity shops have regained their sense of cool, so should the market. Let the arrival of the new supermarkets not act as a cull-ing, but as a rebirth. And with characters like Bill and Jackie on hand, I for one can’t wait for the Christening.

The new Health & Social Care Act 2008 comes into force in October 2010 for Care Homes. The new act brings with

it many changes in the private health care sector, especially care homes looking after vulnerable adults such as the elderly. Its main principles are to ensure that the safety, welfare, rights, dignity and independence of people is both promoted and protected. What’s On...


Like many other historic towns and cities, Bourne has its fair share of

ghost stories and UFO sightings, with many documented sightings at various locations in and around the town.

One of Bourne’s allegedly most haunted locations are the ancient Bourne woods on the western outskirts of the town. These woods date back hundreds of years and have a long history of ghost sightings. One of the most reported sightings is that of a large black dog that is said to observe people while they are in the wood. Although the creature never actually leaves the protective tree line, it is said that this ghostly dog can be heard growling loudly at anyone who is unfortunate enough to encounter its ghostly presence. A local paranormal investigation team recently visited the Bourne Woods to investigate thislocation.After two members of the team refused to enter the wood, due to fear, and the remaining members exiting after only a short time after hearing a ghostly growling sound, thought to be the ‘Black Dog’.

It has been reported that the Bourne Woods may also be haunted by a grey lady and man who are said to roam the woods after darkness falls, although documented cases of this particular haunting are scarce.

The Math wood, located on the southern outskirts of the town, close to the new by-pass and the small hamlet of Northorpe are also reported to be haunted. It is said that these woods are haunted by a ghostly character known as Nanny Rutt. Legend has it that in the distant past, a girl went into the wood, to a well located in the wood, and disappeared having been taken off by Nanny Rutt. It has been reported that some people have experienced an overwhelming sense of being watched when walking though these woods and hearing identifiable noises, which it is thought could be Nanny Rutt.There have also been sightings of ghostly figures seen on some of the isolated roads around Bourne, most notably the road between Bourne and Sleaford, where one couple reported seeing a ghostlyfigure on the far side of the road. It was said that this figure was seen walking towards them and grabbed their attention because he wore strange clothes, and it was so dark and there was no sign of life or civilization in the direction in which he was heading. Finally, it is also reported that one of the oldest surviving domestic properties in Bourne, the Red Hall is reputably haunted by the ghost of a former resident, who has been seen oaming this 17th century building on a number of occasions.

UFO sightings in and around Bourne are also common place, with many people claiming to have experienced an unexplained sighting..... but more about that another time.

1. Put the potato flesh into a large bowl and crush with a fork.

2. Put 25gm of the butter in a non-stick frying pan, then gently fry the chopped mushrooms and onion until soft. Add the garlic and wild mushrooms to the pan for 3 or 4 more minutes until cooked.

3. Add the cooked mushrooms to the potato bowl together with the blue cheese, cut into 1cm chunks.

4. Beat one of the eggs and add this to the bowl with the parsley, two large pinches of salt and 6 turns of black pepper. Give the contents of the bowl a good stir.

5. Beat the second egg in a small bowl. Have the breadcrumbs ready in a second bowl and a large plate or tray to hold the mushroom cakes ready for cooking.

6. Take a heaped dessert spoon of the mixture and form into a fishcake shape. Dip into the beaten egg (allowing any surplus to drip back into the bowl) then coat with the breadcrumbs. Place on the tray until required. This is a messy job but is made easier if someone else does the washing-up.

7. To finish the mushroom cakes, fry gently in the remaining butter on both sides until golden brown.

The word “Mushroom” comes from the latin “Mussius Ruminus” which all you scholars will know

translates as “From the Armpits of a Cow”. However, some people seem to actually like the things, so here is a recipe.

This is essentially a vegetarian fishcake, without the fish. Texture is important, so instead of normal mashed potato we scrape the insides of baked potatoes and crush roughly with the back of a fork. Still on the theme of texture, if you make your own bread, save any leftovers for making breadcrumbs. It will freeze well in chunks until you need it and results in a much crunchier finish than “Super-market” bread. The chunks can then be blitzed in a food processor or the grinder attachement of the blender (which will be at the back of the cupboard behind the pasta machine and the fondue set). Defrost first, unless you want your fillings loosened.

• 2 Large Potatoes,

• 50 gm Butter

• 200 gm Closed Cup Mushrooms - finely chopped

• ½ Large Onion, finely chopped

• 1 Clove Garlic, finely chopped

• 1 Red Herring

• 100 gm Wild Mushrooms - (Oyster, Chestnut, Shittake etc

torn or very coarsely chopped )• 200 gm Blue Cheese

• A good few sprigs of fresh parsley

yes, you guessed, finely chopped

• 2 Medium Eggs

• A largish bowl of breadcrumbs

It is a well known fact that most people never get around to making their Wills, however there are certain families where a Will is the most important document that they can possibly make.

This month we look at families with Children with Special Needs and Disability one of the key worries for parents is what will happen to my child when I am no longer around to care for them. Sadly the answer is all too often in the hands of the local authorities, and a key area of planning for the child’s future therefore needs to be what happens to the money that they might inherit.

For a family member with a disability inheriting money can cause problems with any means tested benefits they may be receiving as well as the nature of their care package if the financial position changes. However with the right planning and the use of a carefully constructed Special Needs Trust you can protect a child and their inheritance throughout their lifetime.

• Setting up a trust means you can leave money for a family member with a learning disability without them having to

worry about the responsibility of looking after it in their lifetime. It is also a way of avoiding applications to the Court of Protection for a deputy to be appointed to deal with their finances if they are not able to manage looking after the money themselves.

• If an adult child with a learning disability is, or is likely to be, entitled to means-tested state funding in the future, they can be a beneficiary of a discretionary or a disabled person’s trust. This means the money that they get from the trust fund will not be included when they are being assessed. This is not true for all trusts – so it is very important that you discuss the specific issues with a professional.

• By putting money into a trust for a person with a learning disability, you can make the money available for them in their lifetime should they need it, for example for holidays, equipment or healthcare. You can also dictate where the money should go on their death.
