The Orangutan’s Appearance The orangutan is mostly covered with

reddish-brown hair. They have floppy cheeks, which get larger as the ape ages. The adult orangutan weighs as much as a man. He can weigh 200 pounds. His hair is long and flows over his head and shoulders. This is an adaptation that makes him look even bigger.

An Orangutan’s Diet The orangutan is a herbivore or plant-eater.

They eat leaves and plants, but they LOVE fruit. They like to eat bananas, wild plums, and figs. When they can’t find fruit, the red ape chews on bark and nibbles on leaves, ferns, and flowers. They even eat insects and termites.

An Orangutan’s Habits:Orangutans are awake during the day. They call

that being diurnal.

Orangutans are omnivores. That means they eat both plants and animals.

The orangutan makes a nest in tree branches. At night it will curl up and go to sleep. The nests are made of leaves and branches.

An Orangutan’s HabitatThe Orangutan live in different kinds of Rain

Forests.

This animal lives in the jungle where it is mostly warm and wet. Mostly they live in high trees. Some trees are 20 to 75 feet tall. The Orangutan’s arms are 8 feet long from finger tip to fingertip.

The orangutan is one of the great apes, a group that includes gorilla.

The Orangutan’s Strength:The Orangutan can even kill a fearsome

crocodile. AlsoIf the orangutan smacks you it can knock you

out. The Orangutan is very strong and has a lot of power

in his whole body.

The Orangutan’s Life CycleThe Orangutan gives birth to live babies.

At first, the Orangutan baby drinks his or her mom’s milk. Then the mom teaches her baby how to find food, what to eat, and how to protect itself.

When the Orangutan turns into a teen, they should know how to take care of themselves.

The Orangutan lives from about 35 to 40 years.

Language and Intelligence The Orangutan is as smart as a human. They even

have the same size heart. They are very similar to humans and are very intelligent.

They have the same senses as we do. They hear, see, smell, taste, and touch.The orangutan sometimes even use leavesto help them drink water.

They have been know to use leaves like an umbrella so that they don’t get wet when it is raining. .

Orangutans move by swinging from branch to branch. They can grab things with their hands and their feet.

They have four long fingers and a thumb.

They do not have a tail.

If they spread their arms apart, they have an 8 foot arm span.
