These slides were delivered by Dr Martin Glasser, Senior Registrar in Care of Older People ,
Royal Free Hospital, as Dr Basit was not able to attend
Dr Glasser talked about the Confusion assessment method, which requires identification of Acute
onset and fluctuating course, Inattention and then either disorganised thinking or altered level of
consciousness see http://www.guysandstthomas.nhs.uk/resources/our-services/acute-medicine-gi-
surgery/elderly-care/cam-diagnostic-algorithm.pdf He suggested a triage screening may be done by
asking a patient to recite the months of the year in backwards order. This requires attention and
organised thinking. It has been shown that younger people who develop delirium (eg post trauma or
infection) are more likely to develop dementia in later life. However the cause is not known (ie the
trauma/infection or predisposition)
Mini mental state examination (30 question) and Addenbrookes cognitive examination (100
questions)
