This page is devoted entirely to the Durand High School Wrestling program. The Durand Wrestling program started out in the year 1962. Since then there have been a great number of wrestlers to come through the program. In wrestling the point system can be a little confusing if you are not actually involved in it. You can earn 1-3 points on any given move. You earn 1 point for an escape, which is if you are in the down position and you get away from your opponent. If you are in the down position and you get on top of your opponent, that is called a reversal and you would receive two points. Another move is called a near fall. That is when you have your opponent with their back toward the mat. You can either earn 2 or 3 points for that move, depending on the amount of time you hold them for. If you hold them for a count of three you get 2 points, and if you hold them for a count of five, you get 3 points. State Champions

John Rippley 155# State Champion John Rippley was Durand's first wrestling state champion ever, in a program that has been around since 1963. He was a state runner up in 1984 at the 138# weight class. He ended up with an overall career record at Durand High School of 100-16. On his way to winning the state title he won his only conference championship and was a regional champion as well. He won his sectional championship, worked hard, and was victorious at bringing home the first ever state wrestling championship to Durand High School in 1985. After completing a successful high school career John Rippley went on to wrestle at United States Army Academy at West Point. In 1986 John won The

Crum Memorial Award. This award is presented to the most courageous wrestler from the Fourth Class. The Major Edward "Wally" Crum, USMA Class of 1960, was killed in action in Vietnam in February of 1968. In 1989 John won the Mike Natvig Award. "Presented annually to the most successful varsity wrestler for his performance during the course of the season." That year John ranked fifth in the nation at 167# in Division 1.

Also in 1989 John was the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Champion at 167#. John Rippley finished his 1988-89 season, and his career, with a record of 36-5. This was good enough to put him at fifth all time at West Point for most wins in a single season. He finished his overall career with a records of 94-28-1, which put him at seventh all time for most career wins at West Point. In addition to all of this he also finished eighth all time at West Point for career pins with 19. He graduated from West Point in 1989.

Tim Hartung 160# State Champion

In 1994 Tim Hartung became only the second DHS wrestler ever to capture the Divsion II State Championship crown. It would take him two trips to the state tournament in Madison to do so. Tim made it to the state tournament the year before and had placed fifth at 152#. On his way to making it to the state tournament, Tim won his second consecutive Middle Border Conference Championship and his second consecutive Division II Regional and Sectional Championship. Along with Tim making it to the state tournament in 1994, he had two teammates that qualified also, which helped him down in Madison. Those teammates were Corey DeLong, who placed 5th, and Troy Lerum, who place 6th respectively.

Tim ended his career with a 114-13 record wrestling for Durand High School. After graduating from Durand, Tim went on to wrestle for the University of Minnesota. While

at the University of Minnesota, Tim captured 3 Big Ten Championships as well as being a 2x NCAA Wrestling Champion.

Tyler Baier 160# State Champion

In 1999 Tyler Baier became the 3rd DHS wrestler to win the State Wrestling Tournament. He did this at the 160# weight class. He is the first DHS wrestler to win it and have a chance to come back and defend his crown. That is because he won it when he was only a junior at Durand High School.

Tyler went on to the StateTournament having won the Division II Regional and Sectional Championships. He was also the Middle Border Conference runner-up in 1999, and earlier in the season he had won the Northern

We had a good showing at the regional tournament which was held at Baldwin-Woodville. As a team we placed 4th, with 150.5 team points.

Many individuals did well. We had one champion, two second place finishers, and three people that placed third.

Only the top two finishers at each weight advanced to the sectional tournament which was then held at Osceola High School.

We had three wrestlers that advanced to the sectional tournament at Osceola.

These wrestlers are: Tyler Baier Lee Unser Justin Moore.

Tyler Baier won his first two matches but lost in the Championship round. Because of this loss, he needed to win the next match in order to advance to the

state tournament. He won this match, which secured a spot for him in the state tournament.
