TEACHING MINISTRY

Signs of Love Update by Avery PettwayI am writing to give a brief update on the work being done with "A Parish Founded on Love." One exciting thing is the "Signs of Love" class that has its 4th meeting today. Don Renzo’s book, addressing the covenant of marriage and how it changes all people, is proving quite thought-provoking and enriching. If you are still interested in being part of this discussion, do not think it is too late. Each Sunday will be valuable in and of itself, so feel free to come! Another wonderful

development pertains to the FCE (Family Communities for Evangelization). A small number of us are beginning the first group of this kind, so as to prayerfully consider how Don Renzo’s idea might benefit Truro as we follow Tory’s bold call to radical hospitality, evangelistic love for the lost, and deep unity with one another. Please keep this group in your prayers.

What brings me most joy, however, is the wealth of conversations happening in the congregation. How is Theology of the Body relevant to the unmarried or divorced? How exactly can we evangelize through our homes? How can we confidently search for beauty and truth in Catholic works and teaching without letting differences ruin our efforts? There has been much fruitful dialogue, and there is much more to be had.

As always, please call or email me for any reason at all! Especially if these questions or any others on this topic hit home for you, I’d love to meet up and hear your thoughts.

Thoughts? Contact Avery Pettway, apettway@truroanglican .com or join the "A Parish Founded on Love" group in the City.

TRURO FAMILY NEWS 3

LOCAL MINISTRY

Supporting Those Who Serve On Veterans DayIn honor of Veterans Day and in support of CRU Military’s efforts to lift up the name of Jesus and to care for the spiritual needs of our military, veterans, and families, we will be taking a special love offering today. Cru Military (formerly Military Ministry) is a division of Cru and Campus Crusade for Christ International. Truro’s own General Jeff Oster is the Executive Director.

Almost every day in the news, we are reminded of the critical role of our military in the defense of our freedoms. Many of those who have served and are serving today are the sons and daughters, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters, or friends of those attending Truro.

Those we honor on Veterans Day have served in our active forces, in our reserves, and in our National Guard. They served on the ground and in the air over all seven continents, and they have served on and under all the oceans and seas. In the more than 238 years since our nation's founding, nearly one and one half million patriots have died defending our freedoms.

Cru Military is a caring community passionate about connecting the global military community to Jesus Christ. Our ministries, resources, and partnerships are all based on the belief that faith makes a difference in the lives of those in harm’s way—those who have answered the call to serve their nations and live with the special conditions and stresses of military life.

With more than 400 staff and volunteers serving both here and in 26 countries internationally, Cru Military partners with Chaplains, commanders and churches to present the Gospel and provide spiritual resources. Through Jesus Christ, we witness the power of transformed lives in the global military community.

Please consider giving to make a difference for those who serve us so selflessly. To donate, please make out your check payable to Cru Military .

Thoughts On Giving (continued)

“God has so constituted our nature that we cannot be happy unless we are, or think we are, the means of good to others. We can scarcely conceive of greater wretchedness than must be felt by him who knows he is wholly useless in the world.”—Erskine Mason (1801–1881).

“He who is not liberal with what he has does but deceive himself when he thinks he would be liberal if he had more.” —William Swan Plumer (1802–1880).

“Those who give not of their property till they die show that they would not then if they could keep it any longer.” —Joseph Hall (1574–1656).

“To feel much for others, and little for ourselves; to restrain our selfish and exercise our benevolent affections, constitutes the perfection of human nature.” —Adam Smith (1723–1790).

“I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. In other words, if our expenditure on comforts, luxuries, amusements, etc., is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little.” —C.S. Lewis (1898–1963).

“A man there was, and they called him mad; the more he gave, the more he had.” —John Bunyan (1628–1688).

Bags of Blessing! (continued)

Here’s how “Bags of Blessing” works: Empty grocery bags will be distributed today and Sun, Nov 17. Bags are individualized for the specific ministry you wish to support, with a list of suggested donation items. You fill the bags and return them on Sun, Nov 24, where they are collected in our parking lot. During the following week (the three days prior to Thanksgiving Day), bags are distributed to the designated ministries and those in need.

For more information, contact Coleman Tyler, ctyler@truroanglican .com.

Did you know over 600 people are on The City? There are also over 80 groups, an events calendar and service opportunities. If you haven't joined yet, it's not too late! Visit the Genius Bar after church or email Meghan Graham, [email protected].

There will be no Re-Awakenings or Youth Group today because of the Fall Retreat.
