Family. No better reason to

go to a ballgame. No better

reason to take a vacation in

Arizona. Brad Beattie has

been coming to the World

Series since 1993 because his

dad and his brothers enjoy the

same things he does. For

many years his oldest brother,

Bobby was very active in bringing teams

along with his father, Bob. Two years agoBobby passed away, a great loss to all who

knew him. This year the whole family got

together. Brad says its all about reconnect-

ing. In their home of Springfield, Missouri

there is no local MSBL league. They enjoy

hooking up once a year for a busy week of

baseball, most of the time without benefit of

more than one other Sunday during ball sea-

son to play together. So the time in the Val-

ley is as special to be together as it is to win

ball games. They have won a few. Starting in

1993, they struggled their first year, but

quickly added the right mix of players to becompetitive. Over the years they have won

championships in 25+ and 35+ (twice). The

team has played under the name Kansas City

Royals and Coors. They have had sponsors

who are connected with Brads grocery busi-

ness, including Price Cutter, Pepsi, Coca

Cola, and Coors. Several of the team are

involved with local baseball in Springfield,

mostly in administrative capacities, and they

run a high school and college league there.

Virtually the same team comes each year,

depending on who is available. This year

three new members accompanied the team

while a couple of guys were in Puerto Rico

competing in the PanAm games. Brads

wife, Lyn enjoys having their children with

them. Daughters Brittany (26) and Breanna

(22) make the trip along with son Beau (24)

who plays baseball at Drury University in

Springfield. Brad says the new Sunday start

for their age group really helps the teachers

on his team, but they are usually unable to

attend the banquet. He loves the stadium

games, especially Maryvale, and says in his

Over the last 24 hours the weather has changed dramatically in the greater metropolitan

with thunder and lightning causing an hour long delay on Tuesday night, plus a game that

to be moved to the Tempe Diablo complex from the Camelback complex yesterday. Sev

of the final games in each division had an impact on the playoff pairings. In some cases

teams that advanced were determined by runs allowed. A pretty dramatic ending for ano

very exciting tournament week. The Father and Son divisions begin play this morning wdouble headers the next two days.
