How to configure TMS (Transport Management System)

TMS Configuration

●● TMS is the transport tool that assists the CTO for central

management of all transport functions. TMS is used for performing:●

○ Defining Transport Domain

Controller.○ Configuring the SAP system

andscape○ Defining the Transport !outes

among systems "ithin the system andscape○ Distri#uting the configuration

●● Transport Domain Controller $ one of the systems from the

landscape that contains complete configuration information and controls the system

landscape "hose transports are #eing maintained %ointly. &or a'aila#ility and security

reasons( this system is normally the Producti'e system.

)ithin transport domain all systems must ha'e a uni*ue System +ds and only one of

these systems is identified as the domain controller( the transport domain controller is thesystem "here all TMS configuration settings are maintained. Any changes in to the

configuration settings are distri#uted to all systems in the landscape. A transport group is one or

more systems that share a common transport directory. Transport Domain $ comprises all the

systems and the transport routes in the landscape. andscape( ,roup and Domain are the

terms that are used synonymously #y system administrators.

Step 1:Setting up the Domain Controller

● og on to the SAP system( "hich is decided to #e the Domain

Controller( in client 000 and enter the transaction code STMS.●

● +f there is no Domain Controller already( system "ill promptyou to create one. )hen the Transport Domain is created for the first time( follo"ing

acti'ities happen in the #ac-ground:●

○ +nitiation of the Transport Domain

andscape ,roup○ Creating the user TMSADM

re*uired for !/ Configurations( TMSADM is used as the target login user.○ Creating DMA!".C#$ file in

Step -:Configuring Transport !outes●● Transport outes $ are the different routes created #y

system administrators and are used to transmit changes #et"een the systems in a

system grouplandscape. There are t"o types of transport routes:●

○ Consoli/ation 1&rom D89 to AS2

$ Transport ayers are used○ Deli*ery 1&rom AS to P!D2 $

Transport ayers not re*uired●

● Transport ayer $ is used to group the changes of similar -inds(for e0ample( changes are done in de'elopment o#%ects of same classcategorypac-age(

logically should #e sent through same transport route. Therefore transport layers are

assigned to all o#%ects coming from D89 system. ayers are used in Consolidation

routes( ho"e'er after testing happens in AS( layers are not used and the changes are

mo'ed using single routes to"ards P!D system.

,acage 2 1formerly -no"n as De'elopment Class2 is a "ay to classify the o#%ects

logically #elonging to the same category or pro%ect. A pac-age can also #e seen as an o#%ect

made in any of the de'elopment o#%ect #elonging to a particular Pac-age( "ill #e transmitted

to"ards target system through a designated Transport ayer only( or else the change "ill #e

sa'ed as a ocal 1non6transporta#le2 modification.

How to configure Transport outesan/ ayers

Consoli/ation routes $ )e need to esta#lish a consolidation route for each transport

layer. De'elopment +ntegration system is ta-en as the source of these consolidation routes.

a consolidation route for their transport layer can #e included in changetransport re*uests. After

the re*uest has #een released the o#%ects can #e imported into the consolidation system. +f the

local change re*uests( i.e.( not6transporta#le. nly one consoli/ation route per transport

Setting up Transport outesOnce the Domain and other systems of a landscape are defined( "e need to connect

them "ith the help of proper transport routes 1and layers2. As for many customers5 systemslandscape fall into the same categories( the TMS pro'ides some standard system groups that

can #e used for easily defining routes. )hen standard options are used( routes are generated

automatically< "e can select one of the follo"ing options:

● Single System● T"o6System landscape: D89 and P!D● Three System landscape: D89( AS and P!D

+f "e need to define a more comple0 transport system( "e can also use standard options

initially and thereafter define additional consolidation and deli'ery routes.
