This month marks the 10th Year Anniversary of The Center for Positive Living Supports which was initially established as a subsidiary of MORC and contracted by Michigan’s Department of Community Health to provide a “safety net” plan for the hundreds of people moving out of The Mt. Pleasant Center, Michigan’s last publicly funded institution. The closure was completed on September 9th, 2010 closing a 150 year chapter here in Michigan. The services provided by The Center, in partnership with Progressive Lifestyle, included a statewide training initiative, a mobile response team, and a transition home for those supporting individuals with the most complex behavioral needs. The work of the Center had a significant impact not only on the culture of support for those transitioning out of MPC but for countless others in a supporting role and those being served through our Behavioral Health System of Care. DCH funding for this initiative ended in December 2014. With the reduction of funding and resources The Center continues on a smaller scale primarily offering training on a multitude of topics that all fall within MORC and The Center’s Culture of Gentleness value base. Kym Juntti, was charged with directing both The Center and MORC Training. Kym continues in the role of director and her leadership continues to play a vital part in ensuring the Culture of Gentleness initiatives remain an integral part of all of our training offerings for the benefit of those we serve and the professionals who support them. Please see below for a list of Center offerings for you or those within your circle of influence. Thank you for all of your efforts in ensuring those we serve experience a Culture of Gentleness.

Our Guiding Beliefs & Values

We Believe

There is hope for all people. People deserve to feel emotionally and physically safe. People deserve to feel loved. All people have unconditional value. That individuals thrive “in community” where there is a sense of belonging and

meaningful relationships with others. That community is not a destination; rather, community is a state of being. That we have a personal responsibility to act with urgency, focus and unyielding

commitment on our beliefs.

July 1 brought significant changes to MORC Training. Effective July 1, Macomb County will no longer be funding training through MORC. That means if you are a Macomb County provider, you must schedule through them for free training. If you sign your Macomb staff up for training at MORC, they will be under the private pay model; learners pay before their instructor-led or online registration can be completed. Please see previous emails for special pricing and other considerations. We’ve not had to draw such a hard distinction between the counties before where training is concerned, so here are some guidelines to follow:

What to do: New Staff Macomb County – If you will be directing your new staff to take paid classes at MORC Training, please request a new account in the usual way: Division = Private Pay Provider = (now has MAC in the title) Manager = Private Pay Manager (first name Private Pay, last name Manager) There is no management oversight, attestations, or reports Oakland County – Direct your new staff to request a new account in the usual way. Division = Provider Community Provider = (now has OCHN in the title) Manager = you Management oversight, attestations, and reports will work as usual What to do: Existing Staff Macomb County – Provider & Learning manager access is removed from those managing training for Macomb County providers. Learners who were under Macomb County providers in Cornerstone have been moved to the private pay model, which means they can log in and print any training certificates they have earned from MORC. Oakland County – You can continue to manage training through Cornerstone in the same way. Training Department Grant Award and Initiative

HealthCare Education Initiative

Since 2014, MORC Training and local Peers have been training second-year medical students from Oakland Universities Medical Program through Beaumont Health. Each student receives two and a half hours of training on the difficulties of those who experience disability in receiving quality-integrated health care. This Peer driven curriculum is guided by a course facilitator. The feedback has been wonderful from the medical students. It has opened their eyes to how that can accommodate those with disabilities and how to interact in the most respectful way possible. Most report they did not know much about the history of the disability movement and now feel like they could utilize the information learned when opening future practice. Based on the success of this program MORC was granted a two-year grant from The Developmental Disabilities Council to expand this to other medical and clinical arenas. Bonnie Mazzei (former MORC Supports Coordinator) is the grant coordinator. She has already developed agreements for Social Worker programs for Michigan State University, Oakland University, Oakland Community College, University of Michigan-Flint and the MI-LEND program through Wayne State-DDI. The goal of the grant is to address the significant awareness gap among healthcare providers of the unique needs and barriers faced by those with disabilities in accessing the health care system. We hope to have a larger system impact that may lead to ensuring this topic is added to curriculums for those working to become health care professionals. The Peer Trainers have done an exceptional job with this program. They take great pride in knowing they are making a meaningful impact on the culture of physical health care. If you know of a school or healthcare practice that could benefit from this free training, please reach out to Bonnie Mazzei at [email protected] or 248-701-7641.
