COLLECTION GALLERY

BRING TO LIGHT14 September – 6 September 2020

Across world cultures and time, glass and ceramics have been used as materials to make objects that contain light. These objects are practical, they keep us safe from open flame or they diffuse the glare of the electric light bulb. Many artists and designers have taken these practical requirements and used glass and ceramics to create beautiful light sources that also reflect cultural or religious significance, design styles of a particular time and the skill of mastering different techniques associated with working in glass or ceramics.

EXHIBITIONS

NGC GALLERY

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS19 October – 8 March 2020

Although we rarely stop to acknowledge their presence, windows are part of our day to day life and for the majority of us, they are our most regular connection to glass as a material. In this exhibition Caroline and Maisie Broadhead present a body of work that considers how we perceive what we see when we look into, or out of a window.

Both mother and daughter are highly established contemporary artists. Caroline Broadhead has a background in jewellery and sculpture and Maisie in photography. They have worked with National Glass Centre to make new work in glass for this exhibition which is shown alongside their existing practice.

The exhibition consists of works from National Glass Centre’s collection and loans from the Victoria & Albert Museum’s (V&A) collection. The exhibition supports DesignLab Nation, the V&A’s National Schools Programme, which aims to inspire the next generation of designers.

Supported by Art Fund, The Foyle Foundation and The Barbour Foundation.

OBSERVE EXPERIMENT ARCHIVECURATED BY: NEPN 15 November 2019 – 5 January 2020

An exhibition exploring the age-old sense of wonder we feel when confronted by the complex nature of our ever-changing world whilst examining the parallels between photography and the scientific methods of observation, experimentation and archiving.

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS19 Oct- 8 March 2020

Although we rarely stop to acknowledge their presence, windows are part of our day to day life and for the majority of us, they are our most regular connection to glass as a material. In this exhibition Caroline and Maisie Broadhead present a body of work that considers how we perceive what we see when we look into, or out of a window.

TIM MITCHELL: PRODUCT 31 August – 3 November

An exhibition tracing the birth and death of our clothes through two bodies of photographic artwork. Created over an entire decade, the combined work traces the origins of fashion at Paris Fashion Week, and tracks the emigration of garments to the Indian subcontinent where they are broken down and recycled.

From high-wire spectacles across the River Wear to creative collaborations in partnership with communities around Sunderland, our city-wide programme offers activities and events for everyone to enjoy. Taking place outside of our main venues some of our recent events have included Danny Boyle’s Pages of the Sea on Roker Beach for Armistice 2018 and our Great Place programme with communities across the city. For further information see our website.

MARJOLAINE RYLEYTHIS IS WHAT I SEE16 November - 5 January 2019

Marjolaine Ryley is an artist who works with photography and text, often in relation to archives and social movements.

This exhibition is the first to offer an overview of her entire body of work. It encompasses projects created over a full two decades, as well as a brand new series created from 2015 to 2019. Her work invites us to explore ideas of personal memory, social history, familial relationships and how we narrate our lives through images.

TIM MITCHELL THE HOPELESS TRANSPORT ARCHIVE31 August – 27 October 2019

“The Hopeless Transport Archive focuses on one particular type of artefact at the end of the industrial era: it looks at artefacts that are about to become ‘extinct’. Put another way, the ‘Hopeless Transport Archive’ is a whole repository of dying industrial objects. It is also an indictment of the costs of late capitalism – of the astonishing waste we create, of our carelessness towards the artefacts we create, and of our profligate use of resources.” – Tim Mitchell, 2019

COLLECTIONS SPACE

The Hopeless Transport Archive is a vast collection of photographic images of abandoned vehicles, accumulated over two full decades by artist Tim Mitchell, found on his travels across the whole of Europe.

Mitchell is interested in what happens to objects over the course of their entire life-span, and to all the materials that they are made of – topics both explored and questioned throughout this body of work.

NORTHERN GALLERY FOR CONTEMPORARY ART

The exhibition is part of ‘Observe. Experiment. Archive’, a programme of activity organised by NEPN at University of Sunderland, which also includes an international photographic exhibition at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens.

TIM MITCHELL PRODUCT31 August – 3 November 2019

The exhibition Product brings together two bodies of photographic artwork created over an entire decade, that together track the birth and death of our clothes.

The paired bodies of work involved tracing the ‘origin-myths’ of fashion at Paris and Milan‘s Fashion Weeks‘, through to tracking thousands of garments emigrating from the UK to the Indian subcontinent, to be broken down and finally recycled.

The first body of work was created across six years, when Mitchell was an uninvited artist-in-residence at Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks – having secured access-all-areas privileges to capture life backstage. Here, he provides us with an eye-witness account of how desire

NORTHERN GALLERY FOR CONTEMPORARY ART

is created through enormous spectacle involving multi-million pound budgets.

Alongside, Mitchell presents a body of work created with the anthropologist Dr Lucy Norris that plots the processes by which our clothes end their lives – being herded together in warehouses, stripped of their identities and marks of distinction, and shipped to the Indian subcontinent to be broken down.

The project is accompanied by a major monograph about Mitchell’s career with Berlin-based publisher Kerber, which features contributions from leading academics and curators including economists Luc Boltanski and Arnaud Esquerre, and is designed by award-winning London- and Berlin-based practice Brighten the Corners.

Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art reopened in March 2018 at National Glass Centre.

The Gallery’s opening programme celebrates the achievements of artists living and working in North-East England, who share visions of how we live now.

In 2019 we celebrate the gallery’s 50th anniversary - as one of the first contemporary art galleries in the UK.
