As we bound in to the new year, we can’t help but look back at the strong start to our 94th season! So far we have come along on a swashbuckling adventure with Captain Blood and enjoyed a delightful radio play retelling of the
classic It’s a Wonderful Life. We look forward to bringing you the rest of our incredible lineup. Coming up, we have a hilarious look at two couples as they ease into retirement in A Red Plaid Shirt, followed by Helium, an uplifting story of a former chemistry teacher and her family as she faces the challenges of aging. Finally, we end the season with The Mouse That Roared, a
classic cold-war satire that will leave you in stitches. Also, be sure to join us for the Spring Dinner Cabaret for a diverse selection of one-act plays from some of our up-
and-coming production teams.
Stacey Paus, director of our next mainstage production, A Red Plaid Shirt, made time to sit down with us and talk a bit about the upcoming show:
RLT Tell me how you first got involved with Regina Little Theatre.
SP I have had season tickets to RLT for about 20 years now. I first started volunteering by attending a Stage Management
Workshop in 2012 run by the immeasurable Cheryl Scherle. Mary Fabian was in attendance and asked me to work backstage for a show she was stage managing. The rest, as they say, is history!
RLT Though you have directed one-act plays for our Cabarets in the past, this is your first time directing for the main stage. What are
some of the challenges and benefits of making that jump?
SP I would say that some of the benefits are rehearsing in the bigger space, having more people behind the scenes doing lighting, sound, etc. I haven’t found many challenges so far
since I’ve stage managed main stage plays in the past. I know how things are, in theory, supposed to happen.
RLT Do you have any highlights or insights you can share from the rehearsal
room?
SP This cast and crew are great with the jokes and comebacks, I have
been laughing my pants off since our first read-through. This cast has bonded as we generally do during a production and it’s been an amazing experience.
RLT What can the audience look forward to with A Red Plaid Shirt?
SP I’m hoping that we can bring the energy that we have been
experiencing in rehearsals. There are some hilarious moments, enduring moments, and some that are too sweet for words. My goal is to bring an entertaining night of theatre that everyone can enjoy.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Kingsley’s daughter Alice struggles to keep her headstrong mother’s feet firmly on the ground and her aging mind solidly anchored in reality. We also had a chance to chat with Ken Spencer, who plays Fred Baxter in the upcoming mainstage show, A Red Plaid Shirt:
RLT Tell us a bit about how you first got involved with Regina Little Theatre.
KS Having first gotten involved with Regina Summer Stage productions starting in the summer of 1989,
I auditioned for RLT’s October 1992 production of the play Our Town, directed by Bob Nicholls, and successfully won the role of The Stage Manager (the on-stage role, not the behind-the-scenes role). That was the first of my (so-far) 28 RLT productions as an actor.
RLT You’ve been a pretty big presence at RLT for many years. What is one of the things you enjoy most about
being involved with the organization?
KS The people! So many levels of experience, so much creativity and enthusiasm, so much love of
producing live theatre. It’s lovely to be a part of such an excellent group of people. I love acting on the stage, and I’ve grown to love directing plays as well (so far I’ve directed 15 of RLT’s mainstage full-length plays since 1998).
RLT As an RLT regular, we can’t wait to see you onstage again for A Red Plaid Shirt. The smaller cast means lots of stagetime and your character, Fred Baxter, is a bit of an interesting fellow. What are
some of the ways you like to prepare for a role like this?
KS I’ve forgotten which wise director once said “everything you need to know is in the script” and this is very true of the character of Fred Baxter. He’s not an historical figure, nor is
the play set in any place or time that requires loads of extra research. He’s a retired chartered accountant who has filled his retirement time with too much research on internet medical websites.
RLT What is your favourite part of the rehearsal process?
KS Interacting with the people – that is, the other actors and the production team. I enjoy the company, the camaraderie, and the process of creatively interacting with everyone. The
social aspect of an RLT production is highly enjoyable for me.
RLT What do you think audiences will enjoy most about A Red Plaid Shirt?
KS In the cold of February you will enjoy the warmth of laughter from this lovely comedy. A Red Plaid Shirt reminds me a great deal of that famous television series The Honeymooners,
with Jackie Gleason and Art Carney – about two married couples who are friends getting into comic shenanigans and chaos of their own making.

In preparation for his upcoming workshop on February 29, we sat down to chat character with Brad McDougall.
RLT What is one of your favourite characters that you have portrayed?
BM Sidney Bruhl in the play Death Trap. It was one of the most exciting characters I’ve worked on
because he is such a complex character. There was lots to investigate in the text of the play, a lot of inferences that could be made and then I could use my imagination to determine just how I would act in the situations in the play.
RLT What sorts of exercises can participants expect at the workshop?
BM We will do some text work in groups searching for everything the character says about herself,
what others say about her, when the play takes place, what the approximate age of the character. Then we will make
inferences about the character such as the exact age, what her childhood was like, what her history was. Then we will imagine what effect that had on her, how it informs her actions. We will also do exercises exploring physicalization and atmospheres.
RLT Will participants need to bring anything with them?
BM Pretty much everything is supplied. I will have pages of text ready, and some handouts that people can take away with them.

In MemoriumIt is with great sadness that we share the passing of
Richard “Dick” Carr on November 26, 2019. Dick was a talented musician, an engaging performer, and a beloved member of the RLT family. We are grateful to have called him a friend. His guitar, sense of adventure, and kind heart will be very much missed. Our most sincere condolences to his family.
We are also saddened to announce the passing of
Rev. Ian Paul on January 14, 2020. As an actor, director, and board member, Ian certainly left his mark on our theatre community before relocating and being ordained as a minister. Our condolences to his wife, Brenda Nestegaard, and family.
