Live UnitedMile High United Way is proud to be the first United Way in the country. Founded in 1887 by a group of visionaries: a woman,

two priests, two ministers and a rabbi who came together to help their community. What was originally known as the

“Community Chest,” today is Mile High United Way.

Mile High United Way is a catalyst for social change. Our mission is to unite people, ideas and resources to advance the

common good in three areas: School Readiness, Youth Success and Adult Self-Sufficiency.

Mile High United Way leverages relationships with hundreds of local non-profits, government agencies, policy-makers, and

businesses to create better opportunities for all. We provide a united way for people to come together and engage with their

community because we understand that through collaboration, we can do more together.

We get results and measure the impact of the positive change our work is creating in the community. Be it more kids entering

kindergarten ready to learn, more youth graduating from high school prepared for college or the workforce, or more families

earning a livable wage, we are committed to greater outcomes.

What is Tocqueville?

The national society was created by United Way of America in 1984. Two

years later, Mile High United Way began the Tocqueville Society designed to

deepen individuals’ understanding of, commitment to, and support of the

work of United Way. Mile High United Way’s first society comprised a small

group of 25 donors who gave a total of $250,000. The membership

has since grown to over 400 members giving over $9 million

collectively.

In 2011, our Tocqueville Society received the United Way

Worldwide Fleur-de-Lis Award for Excellence. We were

recognized for the Highest Percentage of Tocqueville Gift

Increases Above 10%. Tocqueville members typically give

a substantial portion of their gift directly to the Mile High

United Way Community Impact Fund.

The Tocqueville Society acknowledges philanthropic leaders in each United Way community. Membership is open to individuals who contribute $10,000 or more annually.

Mile High United Way not only provides services to the community such as 2-1-1, but it convenes nonprofits to help them be more effective and efficient. They help to make sure that nonprofits are having an impact within our community. In giving to Mile High United Way you can be confident that

your dollars are making a difference in the areas the community needs it most.

I give to Mile High United Way because I am certain they invest my gift to where it will have the greatest impact in my community. They know better than anyone what the critical needs of the community are and how to best address those needs. The people at Mile High

United Way work in the heart of our community each and every day. I trust them. And I deeply respect them for what they accomplish.

A Philanthropic Leader The Mile High United Way Tocqueville

Society is named after the French author

Alexis de Tocqueville who, in the 1800s,

traveled extensively throughout the United

States. His observations, readings and

discussions with eminent Americans formed

the basis of Democracy in America, a detailed

study of American society and politics. He wrote:

“I must say that I have seen Americans make

a great deal of real sacrifices to the public

welfare; and have noticed a hundred instances

in which they hardly ever failed to lend faithful

support to one another.”

The observation on philanthropy made by Alexis

de Tocqueville in 1831 is true today. Americans

understand that advancing the common good

means creating opportunities for a better life for

all. We honor this spirit by recognizing those in

our community through the Tocqueville Society.

There is ample evidence that a child who is “ready to learn” on the first day of kindergarten will likely be a success in life. There is equal evidence that the opposite is also true. We refuse to accept as

inevitable the current reality that a healthy five year old should become an unfortunate statistic - and are channeling our efforts and giving to make sure that current reality does not represent the future.

Mile High United Way’s School Readiness initiative is focused on this critical issue and represents the very best avenue for us to travel in our personal quest to improve our community and the lives within it.

I joined the Tocqueville Society because I believe in the work Mile High United Way does in our community, and I wanted to

network with other community and business leaders to share ideas about initiatives we

collectively support. I’m inspired by the passion and commitment of the Tocqueville

Society membership. It’s encouraging to interact with leaders who genuinely care.

Key Initiatives

School ReadinessAll children should be ready for school and are reading

at grade level or beyond by the end of third grade.

Youth SuccessAll youth graduate from high school and are ready

to enter the workforce or transition to college or

advanced training.

Adult Self-Sufficiency All individuals and families

are afforded the opportunity

to move toward economic

self-sufficiency.

Mile High United Way continues on the path toward advancing the common good and achieving tangible results in three key initiative areas: School Readiness, Youth Success and Adult Self-Sufficiency.

Giving to Mile High United Way has been meaningful for me because it ensures that the dollars we contribute reach those in genuine need as efficiently as possible. The staff and

organization are excellent - responsive and responsible, caring, focused, and professional. The Tocqueville Society is a great way to get engaged and to partner with like-minded individuals

in our community who share a strong, on-going commitment to making a difference.

I joined Tocqueville because my former employer, Ball Corporation, is invested in

the greater good and encourages employees through a corporate matching gift program.

By giving to Mile High United Way, I can make a difference toward three of my favorite charity goals: early childhood education,

after-school programs and helping at-risk adults become self-sufficient. Besides, it

is excellent networking with leaders of the Denver Community!

In the place and time that I grew up, philanthropy was delivering a hot meal to the family down the road when their harvest was difficult. My life in Denver today affords me the means and the avenue to help on a different scale, and United Way is the organization I choose to

collaborate with so that what I do is multiplied through the many people who share my values.
