man’s disease.WHO issued thestatement ahead of Wo r l d T B D a y o nMarch 24, saying it wasan opportunity for com-munities, governments,civil society groups andinternational partnersto put the goals of elim-inating TB at the top of their agenda.

“We must focus onmaintaining approach-es that have worked well while incorporat-ing new methods andtechnology to addressevolving challenges,”said Dr. Shin Young-soo, WHO regional di-rector for the WesternPacific.

The WHO said that while the figh t to re- verse the spread of TB was gaining mome n-

tum, the number of

people still affected by it remained high.

In 2013, 9 millionpeople contracted TBand 1.5 million diedfrom the disease.

“Let us reinvigorateour efforts to reach,treat and cure all pa-tients suffering fromTB, including drug-re-s i s t a n t f o r m s . Weneed the concerted ef-forts of all sectors, not just health workers, to

find and fight this dis-

e a s e w h e r e v e r i thides,” Shin said.

teria.While tuberculosismostly affects youngadults in their mostproductive years, allage groups are at risk.

T h e W H O h a sstressed that TB is cur-able and preventable.In fact, an estimated 37m i l l i o n l i v e s w e r esaved through TB diag-nosis and treatment be-

tween 2000 and 2013.It reported that inthe Western Pacific re-gion which covers 37countries, includingthe Philippines, sub-stantial progress hasbeen made in reach-ing Millennium Devel-opment Goals relatingto TB well in advanceof the 2015 deadline.

Al th ou gh th e re-gion’s population is in-creasing, TB cases con-tinue to decline each year—from 2.1 millioncases in 2000 to 1.6million cases in 2013.
