Bus Stop Reminder: As the weather gets colder and the snow gets deeper, many students are waiting in their house or garage and coming out to the bus stop as the bus arrives. Others are waiting in cars and not getting out until the bus has arrived. Please have your children out at the stop a few minutes before the arrival time, so the bus does not have to wait for students to arrive at the stop. In extreme weather situations, the students may wait in a car at the bus stop, but please have them exit the car before the bus arrives so they can load in a timely manner. Even a small delay at each stop adds up to a long delay in getting to the school. We appreciate everyones help in ensuring we get the students to school safely and on time every day. Please dress your children appropriately for the weather, as they will be participating in outdoor recess and activities, unless the weather is extremely cold. Together is a Great Place to Be! Welcome 2018! At Chelsea, we are looking forward to the return of the students to school on January 9th. It is exciting when the hallways are filled with the laughter of students and the classrooms are filled with the celebration of learning. When they return, the students will continue to be engaged with learning that fosters the belief that perseverance can be the key to success and that everyone can achieve their dreams through hard work and dedication Embracing a growth mindset enables people to understand that knowledge increases with hard work and that everyone can achieve at higher levels. It also can have a positive impact on the way that chal- lenges are faced and ultimately overcome. Another important part of school is character development. Our students are learning to treat each other with respect, develop personal responsibility, and demonstrate caring. We are proud to say and celebrate, that the students of Chelsea are continually earning their stripesby displaying respectful, caring, and re- sponsible behaviors. Next time you are in the building, please check out our lunchroom display case that highlights our Tiger Stripe recipients. As winter embraces our world, please be sure to take time to cherish the beauty and wonder that surrounds us. Give yourself and your family the opportunity to slow down. Help your child notice those things that can sometimes go unnoticed—the intricacies of a snowflake, the beautiful silence on a crisp winter night, or the whistling sound made when the wind rushes through the bare branches of the trees. May your family enjoy a wonderful new year that is filled with laughter, love of family and an abundance of friendship. Sincerely, Dr. Sharon Nepote, Principal Ms. Rachel Newcomb, Assistant Principal

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological condition that can involve problems with inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity that are developmentally inconsistent with the age of the child. Several symptoms must be present before the age of twelve in two or more settings (e.g., at home, school, community-based activities). Students with ADHD may be eligible for plans under Section 504 or the Individ-uals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), though some students may experi-ence success within the school setting without the existence of additional sup-ports. School-based evaluations can involve input from a team of people including par-ents, teachers, social workers, school psychologists, and medical professionals regarding the student’s performance within the school setting.

By Mrs. Newman We have had a great first half of the school year. Please ask your students about their supplies. We still have a lot of art to do and many supplies are running low. You may need to resupply: pencils, colored pencils, crayons, mark-ers, and glue sticks. In January, third grade students will be creating a beautiful

work of art using symmetry. They will enjoy coloring and painting their designs with watercolor pencil. Fourth grade students will be learning how to produce a work of art using one point perspective in January. Fifth grade has been designing and painting a cultural mask. After break stu-dents will start a project on OP art.

10 HEALTHY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR KIDS

The following tips are from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

1. I will clean up my toys and keep my room in good order. 2. I will brush my teeth twice a day, wash my hands before eating, and after using the bathroom. 3. I won’t tease dogs, even friendly ones, and I will keep my hands and face away from their mouths. 4. I will drink more milk and water, and limit soda and fruity drinks. 5. I will apply sunscreen before going outdoors. 6. I will find a sport or activity that I like, and do it at least three times a week. 7. I will always wear a helmet when bicycling or boarding. 8. I will wear my seat belt every time I get in the car. 9. I’ll be nice to others, and friendly to kids who need friends, like someone shy or new to school. 10. I’ll never give out personal information or pictures of myself to strangers or over the internet.

Third grade students w ill continue discussing melody and harmony during the month of January. They will participate in a variety of listening, playing, and singing activities throughout the month. They will focus on chords, partner songs, and rounds. Fourth grade students will be using recorders in music class throughout the month of January. We will play simple songs using the pitches B, A, and G and focus on technical aspects of recorder playing such as posture, hand position, and breathing. Recorders will stay at school for the first month or so of playing. If you are bringing in a previously owned recorder from your house, the 4th graders will need to have them at school immediately following winter break! Fifth grade students w ill continue to study music gen-res. In the month of January, students will focus on Handel and Mozart. They will participate in various listening, moving, and playing activities. They will be introduced to which instruments were common in the Baroque Era and the Classical Eras of music.

By Mrs. Jozaitis There are many things going on as the second quarter nears an end. The students reflected upon the engineering of their first

projects, and overwhelmingly, students believed the area that needed to be worked on is communicating with their partner during the planning stage. Often students are excited to jump into building their design, but all students realized that interpretations of the directions can be cleared up if they have a discussion about their plan. Third graders were introduced to the tools of the PARCC computerized assess-ment. Engineering of the parachute project will begin. Students will assemble

their own parachute with the help of their partner. Parachutes will be tested to determine the drop time and if it can carry load. Fourth graders have engineered catapults. Students are testing the launch at different angles, measuring the distance traveled, and time to calculated velocity. Fifth graders are engineering mousetrap cars and testing them for the average velocity. Students will also test the vehicle using their quality testable questions they developed.

Thank you to the volunteers who come in to help. It is greatly appreciated!

Spanish by Ms. Skobel We are in the midst of Unit 2, “Let’s Celebrate,” in Spanish class. This quarter we have been focusing on calendar vocabulary. Our learners have been practicing the months of the year, the date, and days of the week in Spanish. Please ask your students to share some of our calendar songs from class with you. During quarter 2, we have also spent time talking about celebrations, particularly birthdays. Many classes completed a short speaking

activity in which they shared their birth dates with their classmates. In the near future, we will learn vocabulary related to birthday parties. At the end of the quarter, we will also learn about some popular birthday traditions in Spanish-speaking countries. Unit resources are posted on the Spanish classroom webpage. Please visit the webpage to learn along with your student!

By Mr. Innocenti, Mr. Klosowski, and Mr. Dykema In December, we had fun with Speed Stack Relays, Fitness Kickball, Fitness Stations and Bowling. The students had a lot of fun with these new relays, where they not only stacked regular cups, but also mini cups and jumbo cups. Fitness Kickball and the relay races worked on the stu-dents’ cardiovascular endurance. The Fitness Stations tested their muscular strength and cardiovascular fit-ness.

The students got busy with our BOWLING unit. They practiced their approach and delivery and learned how to keep score “the old-fashioned way” with paper and pencil. They also spent some time bowling on the Nintendo Wii systems to help them with their aim and style, as well as understanding bowling scores. We finished up December with Cosmic Bowl. The North Multi-Purpose Room was decked out in flashing, blinking, colorful lights and decorations. Parents were invited to join their child’s PE class and bowl along with us at our cosmic bowling alley.

Looking ahead to 2018: Some fun activities to look forward to in January include Dance and Jump Rope. Our annual Jump Rope for Heart event kicks off in January with a presentation from the American Heart Association. Look for the “Save the Date” card and parent letter explaining on-line websites and donations. The regular donation envelopes will also come home the first week after break.

KEEP SAVING THOSE BOX TOPS! ! ! We are still collecting Box Tops for Education which helps to fund our PE programs and enhance our supplies for both indoor and outdoor recess equipment.
