A note from Mrs. Layman:
Hello Tolbert Families,
First I must share some important news! Ben Chiet, our
administrative intern, is now the new assistant principal at
Catoctin Elementary! He began his new job on February 26.
We congratulate him for making this important step in his
career. We will miss him very much! In his five months at
Tolbert, he initiated a number of programs that will be with
us for years to come! Catoctin Elementary is very lucky to
have him.
A huge thank you to all the families who either came to our
last BINGO or have sponsored a tree in our new landscaping
plan. We raised close to $2500 at BINGO and may be able to
complete phases I and II of our three phase beautification
plan this spring! We raised almost $1500 with our Box Tops
incentive. We are so fortunate to be working and living in
such a generous community.
During February, we managed to complete COGAT testing
for our second graders, present the fourth grade musical,
have our most successful BINGO ever, and host a team of
teachers from Spotsylvania county who observed our PBIS
and RI practices. See more on PBIS and RI in this newsletter.
In the next week, we have the Spring Book Fair and Stories
Under the Stars. We hope to see you there! See the article in
this newsletter for more information about those events.
During the rest of March, the following events will happen:
registration for the third session of PTA after-school
programs, Read Across America Day and Assembly, Fifth
Grade SOL Writing Assessments, and the end of the third
marking period. It will be another busy month!

Responsive Instruction
Access to books over the summer results in more reading which, in turn, results in
improved reading skills. This summer marks the 3rd year that the Tolbert library and
computer lab will be open. From June 17 until Aug13 the library and computer lab
will be open every Wednesday form 10 -12. Students accompanied by an adult can
check out books and find a comfy place to sit and read. Teachers are available each
week to help students locate a “just right” reading book. Putting books in the hands
of our students is the best antidote for the “summer slide” in students’ reading skills.
Equity
The Equity Committee held its 3rd PEP event of the school year on February 20th. PEP (Parents as Educational Partners) is a program aimed to prepare and inform parents who are unfamiliar with the U.S. school system as they advocate and contribute to their children's academic success. At this February event, we delved into the topic of bullying. We became more aware of the causes and signs of bullying, as well as gathered practical tips to prevent cyberbullying. The Equity Committee will hold its 4th and final PEP event of the year on May 1st.
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Tolbert recently was selected to host a delegation of teachers and administrators from
Spotsylvania County to join us for an afternoon visit to see how Positive Behavior
Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is run at our school. PBIS Supervisors from the
administration building joined all of us for a tour and question and answer session. It
was a nice honor to be one of two schools selected for their visit to Loudoun County.
We continue to reinforce our anchors of “Respecting Self, Others and Property” in all
areas of our school day. Students continue to earn Tornado Tickets for showing
excellent behavior and are being recognized on the morning announcements for these
achievements. At the end of each month the classes with the most Tornado Tickets are
recognized as “Terrific Tornados” and earn rewards such as extra recess, extra PE time, a
special dress up day for just their class, etc. Our “Terrific Tornado” classes for last month
were Ms. Mangano, Mrs. Paulson, Ms. Green, Ms., Varner, Mrs. Galati and Ms., Doggett.
Great work to all our students!

Important Dates:
BOOK FAIR THIS WEEK!
March 7th, 7pm online: After School Programs 3rd Session Registration Begins March 11th, 2:45 in the Library: PTA Meeting
PTA President’s Message Hello Tolbert Families,
Even though we have had many cold, snowy days away from school this season, it has still
been a busy time for the Tolbert PTA!
In February and March, we had our second session of After School Programs with classes
for Tolbert children of all ages and interests! Our final session of ASP for the year will
start in March, so be on the lookout for flyers and emails with those dates or refer to the
PTA section of the Tolbert website.
We will host a Spirit Night at Ashburn Ice House on March 21st. It should be an
absolute blast, so lace up your ice skates and join us!! Information will be coming home
in folders and can be found on the website as well.
One of our biggest and most important projects this year has been raising funds to assist
with Tolbert’s new landscaping renovation plan. Not only will this plan make our
school look beautiful, but it will help with safety issues in and around our parking lot,
which is a top priority!
With your help, funds raised at our recent Bingo Night, along with funds from our
Box Tops contest have raised nearly $4000 for landscaping. Wow! Way to go, Tolbert
families!! Many of you have also been excited to participate in our “Tolbert Trees”
program, where families or groups can help sponsor a Maple, Crepe Myrtle or Magnolia
tree for the school landscape project. If you are interested in sponsoring a “Tolbert Tree,”
please refer to the PTA section of the Tolbert website.
We are also very excited to let you know about a special project this year! To give our
teachers a helping hand with getting our kids up and moving when outside at recess, each
classroom will receive its own Tolbert Recess Bag just in time for Spring! The giant,
mesh bags are filled with a variety of balls and playground equipment for the kids to play
with. The bags will also help make clean-up easy!
Many more wonderful events are still to come this Spring, including Muffins with Moms,
Spirit Nights at Chick-fil-A and Pump it Up and our hugely popular Fun Run!!
Be looking for information about those events.
In the coming months, we will be filling the many PTA Officer and Committee Chair
positions for the 2014-2015 school year. If you are interested in getting more involved in
one of these areas, PTA Officer and Committee Chair positions can be found on the PTA
tab of Tolbert’s website.
As always, the PTA would love to have any volunteer help you can provide!! Our spare
hours add up to amazing things for our children and our school. If you are interested
in volunteering, just jump right in!! If you need help finding a volunteer opportunity,
don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or our
Volunteer Coordinator, Amy Baugus, at [email protected] .
