    1) Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore India

    The Indian Institute of Science is apremier research institution of higherlearning located in Bengaluru, India.

    The Indian Institute of Science (IISc)was conceived as a ResearchInstitute or University of Researchby Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, in thetwilight years of the 19th century. Along period of almost thirteen yearswas to elapse from the initial

    conception in 1896 to the birth of the Institute on May 27, 1909.

    IISc currently ranks first in India in terms of research output and qualityof faculty (citation and impact factor). It also ranks first among Indianuniversities (and South Asian universities) in the "Academic ranking ofworld universities" conducted by the SJTU, China.

    IISc has been ranked the number one engineering/technology instituteamong top 67 science institutes in the country. The ranking has beendone on basis of publications and citations and research recordavailable between 1999 and 2008 in the Scopus International multi-disciplinary, bibliographical database.

    The Institute spends the highest amount on research among alluniversities in India. Admissions to IISc are highly competitive,

    consistently admitting only the top 1 percent of those attempting theGraduate Aptitude Test in Engineering(GATE).

    The Institute was the first to introduce

    (i) Masters programs in engineering;

    (ii) more recently, the Integrated Ph. D. Programs in Biological,Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences for science graduates;

    (iii) the new IISc Young Fellowship program for the first 20 rank holdersat the + 2 level; and

    (iv) IISc Young Engineering Fellowship program for merited III year B.E. / B. Tech. students.

    The library was established in 1911 and it is one of the first threedepartments started in the Institute (the other two are Departments ofGeneral and Applied Chemistry and Electrotechnology). It is regarded

    as one of the best scientific and technical libraries in India.

    Hostel facilities:

    The institution provides on-site residential facilities for both male andfemale attendees to the institution. It also provides accommodation formarried attendees in the form of family friendly accommodation. Someof the older hostels in the Indian Institute of Science campus areAshwini, Bharini, Krithika and Rohini. Interestingly, these are namedafter the Hindu names for lunar mansions. Similarly, the apartments formarried attendees of the institution are named Kaveri, Kapila andBhaskara, which are prominent holy rivers and Vedic Sages inHinduism.

    Degrees offered:Degrees offered by the institute may be broadly classified into twocategories: Degrees by Research (PhD, integrated PhD, andMS(Engg.)), and degrees by coursework (ME/MTech/MBA/MDes).Research programs leading to M.S(Engg)/MSc/PhD degrees are themain thrust in many departments. The program has a limited amount ofcourse work, essentially to prepare the student to carry out theresearch, but the main emphasis is on the thesis work. PhD, MSc and

    M.S(Engg)degrees each year, which is probably the largest for anyinstitution in India. The annual intake of research students isapproximately 250 with several candidates sponsored from educationalinstitutions and industries.Admission Procedure:

    Admission into IISc is highly competitive. Usually only the top 1 percentcandidates qualifying the GATE examination are able to clear the cutofffor M. E. / M. Tech. admissions. Depending on the department and thenumber of students, the cutoff can get much higher. Admission toresearch programmes of the Institute, both PhD and M.Sc(Engg), isbased on career analysis and (possibly) multiple rounds of technicalinterviews in the campus.ADMISSIONS FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR :Qualifying in one of the following appropriate Tests (with validcertificate) is mandatory for the candidates applying for Ph D inScience, Interdisciplinary programs and M Sc(Engg): CSIR-UGC NETfor JRF; or UGC-NET for JRF; or DBT JRF or ICMR JRF; or JEST; or

    NBHM; or IISc Entrance Test; or GATE. This is not applicable to thecandidates who possess a Master s degree in Engineering/Technology/Management (post BE/B Tech) who wish to apply for a Ph d inEngineering.

    IISc Entrance Test is conducted in Atmospheric Sciences,Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Ecological Sciences, Mathematics,Management Studies, Materials Science.Course program:1. ME2. M Tech3. M DesResearch program :Doctoral (Ph D) and Master s (M Sc [Engg]) in 29 departments/ centres/units. In addition, a doctoral (Ph D) program is available in 6interdisciplinary areas.Admission to Ph D in Engineering is open to candidates with BE /BTech/M Sc degree.

    2) About Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur)in India

    IIT Kanpur was established by an Act ofParliament in 1959. IIT Kanpur is one of

    the top technological institutes of India.The first Director of the Institute was Dr.P. K. Kelkar. The institute was started inDecember 1959 in a room in the CanteenBuilding of the Harcourt ButlerTechnological Institute at Agricultural

    Gardens in Kanpur. In 1963, the Institute moved to its present location,on the historic Grand Trunk Road near the village of Kalyanpur inKanpur district. rime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had realized thatto keep pace with the ever changing world of science and technology, itis necessary to collaborate closely with the outside world. The KanpurIndo-American Programme (1962-1972) at IIT-Kanpur was a stride in

    this direction. During the period 1962-72, the Institute receivedtechnical assistance under KIAP from a consortium of nine leadingInstitutions of U.S.A. Under the program, faculty members from theseInstitutions assisted the Institute in the setting up of the academicprograms and development of laboratories for instruction as well asresearch.

    The Institute now has its own residential campus spread over 1,055acres of land, about 2,000 undergraduate and 2,000 postgraduatestudents, 326 faculty and more than 1,000 supporting staff. Thecombined record of its past and present faculty and students along withthe alumni spread across the world is awe-inspiring.

    recognised as one of the centres of academic excellence in thecountry. Over the years, there has been dynamic progress at IITBombay in all academic and research activities, and a parallelimprovement in facilities and infrastructure, to keep it on par with thebest institutions in the world.

    Objectives and Goals The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay seeks to establishtraditions which will foster creativity and growth of excellence. Theinstitute has the following broad objectives :

    To provide the best possible educational facilities for trainingbright students for the careers in technology and science.To provide a creative atmosphere in which higher studies andresearch thrive both amongst the students and the faculty.To organize a short intensive courses, conferences andseminars on current technological developments which will beof benefit to the surrounding community.To provide research and development consultancy which willpromote contact with and be of service to industries and togovernment and Civic Organizations.To organize quality improvement programmes for facultymembers from various engineering colleges.To provide leadership in curriculum design and development.

    The Institute cherishes the hope that its graduates will be the leaders oftomorrow. Their education is patterned with this in view. Thus in theengineering curriculum, besides the professional courses, there is astrong emphasis on acquiring a thorough grounding in the basicsciences of mathematics, physics and chemistry and a reasonableknowledge in subjects like economics, english, philosophy and socialsciences belonging to the Humanities and Social Science. Theemphasis on the basic sciences removes to some extent the fear ofrapid obsolescence, while studies in the Humanities help the students

    to interact more positively with the society in which he lives. Besidesmaking available facilities for higher education, traning and research invarious fields of engineering and technology, the Institute contributes tothe industrial development and economic growth of the country bypreparing a cadre of engineers and scientists, who provide both man

    power and support R&D work for industries.
