These are the memories that I wish I had photographs of. LIFE. Real life, with it’s real imperfections, and it’s genuine moments. There’s a place for the pretty pictures with everyone looking, I get that. But when you are booking a family photographer, really think about whetherwhether you want a snapshot of everyone looking. Or whether you want images that SPEAK TO YOUR SOUL.

Let me ask you something. What are your all time favorite memories from your childhood? Think about it for a minute.

For me, the summers that I spent on my grandparent’s farm in Alabama growing up rank pretty high on the list of greatest memories.

LayingLaying my head in my mother’s lap during sermon’s at church every Sunday is another one.

FishingFishing for crabs on the coast of Georgia, and then bringing them home to boil for a large feast with the family on the back porch. Table covered with newspaper piled high with crabs, ready to dig in.

Documentary family photography is real and honest. It speaks the truth about who you are at that exact

moment in time.

Done right, documentary family Done right, documentary family photography can make you laugh or cry with just one image. It makes you

Go into each room of your house and look at where the natural light comes in. Do this a few times a day, to see what type of sunlight comes through at different times of the day. The best light is indirect and soft. soft.

Find a room with a dark background so that when the light is shining on your subject it really highlights their features. It could be a dark wall, or a hallway with light at one end and shadows at the other.other. Don’t be afraid to play with low light!

Finding a pocket of light canreally add depth to an image andand draw focus to your subject. Look for small windows or utilise curtains and furniture to create a smaller pocket of light. Encourage your child to sit or play in that light and start shooting!shooting!

DOCUMENTING YOUR FAMILY TIP #2

COURTNEY HOLMESch

You remember you how you felt the last time you pulled out that box of photos from when you were a kid? You’d lay them all out on your bed, feel the texture of the paper in your hands, and relive those memories like they were yesterday.

You just don’t get that with digital images. Sure they bring back memories, but over time you collect so many of them that your electronic devices become saturated with media and it’s overwhelming to got through it all and find your photos.

OneOne of the bonus’s of hiring a professional photographer is we print with special labs on special paper that last for years and years and years. Having that shoebox of memories is SO important to me infact, that I now include your full set images as 5x7 prints in a keepsake wooden box that you get to keep and pass down to your grandchildren, and their grandchildren, and their grandchildren. Imagine how special that will be to your great great grandchildren!

AndAnd when you touch and feel these prints, and see the difference between your kmart prints from the last photography session you had and these, I promise.... you’ll never go back.

I really encourage you, if you are the DIY type, to create albums with your digital images. My favorite supplier with user friendly software is www.milkbooks.com.
