TracesAn Art Project on the Island of Gavrinis

    by Hseyin ArdaApril 2009

    ABOUT

Traces is initiated by Hseyin Arda and Pierre-Ange Le Pogam as an art

project which will generate artistic production on the historical island of

Gavrinis. Within the framework of the project, urban artists from the

metropolises Berlin& Paris will create and develop art together, inspired by

the enchanting atmosphere of the archeologically significant island Gavrinis in

    Brittany, France.

The project Traces is composed of three phases. In the initial phase of the

project, the sculptor and the organizer of the project, Hseyin Arda made

preparatory visits to the island during 2008. The following two phases will

take place respectively in April and May 2009. Throughout April, in their

temporary studios, theartists will carry out artistic production. Finally, on the

1st of May 2009, the grand exhibition will be on display on the distinctive

Open Air Gallery of the island of Gavrinis.

Under the curatorship of Hseyin Arda, who is a well-known urban metal

artist based in Berlin, the project Traces will assemble a number of

international artists connected to Arda Metallwerkstatt, Berlin, and several

free-lance artists from France. In the course of the project, the artists will

generate a broad repertoire of artistic productions such as metal and wood

sculptures, paintings, drawings, photography and video films.

    OBJECTIVES

The idea of the project Traces arose from the stimulating and seducing

environment and the history of the island of Gavrinis. Situated in the Gulf of

Morbihan in Brittany, France, the cairn of Gavrinis is one of the major

treasuries of European megalithic art. Throughout history, the island has been

a living space for different groups of people - from Neolithic age inhabitants to

medieval monks. For Hseyin Arda, the power of Gavrinis derives from the

symbolism and concrete meaning of its historical site. It is now time for

contemporary artists to leave traces to the island of Gavrinis from 21st

    century.

    The project Traces aims at

Building a bridge between history and present time, by using thehistorical heritage of the island as a source of inspiration for the

    artistic production,

Dynamic artistic production animated by an unusually impressivesurrounding of the island of Gavrinis,

Contributing to the ever-changing spatiotemporal significance ofthe island of Gavrinis,

Creating an opportunity for international artists of different artgenres for intensive exchange and mutual inspiration,

And finally, turning the project Traces into an annual event forthe coming years.
