To Be Green, Homes Must BeDry and Mold-Free

(NewsUSA) - You often hear the termgreen building as homebuyers seekto purchase homes that are builtusing recycled materials or that useless energy.

Recycling and energy-efficiency areimportant goals, but they must bepursued in a way that preserves yourhomes ability to manage and repelmoisture. Energy-efficient homesoften trap unwanted moisture. Some

renewable building materials arentdurable enough to be sustainable. So, how do you build green anddry? According to The ResponsibleSolutions to Mold Coalition (RSMC),a consortium of building materialscompanies and associations, including USG Corporation, NationalGypsum and American Gypsum, building green homes meansdesigning, building and maintainingthem in a way that keeps moistureat bay. Damp homes not onlydeteriorate more quickly, they alsocreate an unhealthy environment that

can become moldy and attract insectsand other vermin.

Here are some helpful hints to makesure your home stays dry:

    * Avoid complex roof designs thattrap rainwater in valleys that do notdrain.

    * Never install wet building materials-- they should be protected from theelements before installation.

    * Flashings must be installed aroundall doors, windows and chimneysto drive moisture outside of thebuilding.

    * Only install drywall once the homehas been closed in, and give jointcompound enough time to dry beforeit is painted or covered.

    * Be sure that there is adequateventilation in your home. Energy-efficient homes can trap moisture, which leads to mold.

    * Bamboo flooring is abundant andrenewable, but bamboos not highlydurable. For a truly green floor, choose more durable materials, likeceramic tile.

    * Select the right type of wallboardfor high-moisture rooms like kitchensand baths. Generally, cement board

or boards that combine fiberglass andcement are best for applying ceramictile. Tile grout allows water intrusion, which can lead to mold.

For more information onthese and other mold-resistantbuilding tips, please visit www.responsiblemoldsolutions.org. Also,a copy of a free brochure on mold-fighting tips is available by [email protected].

The survey also found that therate of illegal drug use among blackadults is higher than the nationalaverage 9.5 percent compared with7.9 percent. And among black malesages 26 to 49, illegal drug use is 14.7percent compared with 11.2 percentin the general population for that agegroup. Binge drinking is also much

    Paul DiMeo: The peoplescarpenter

By Kim YeagerStar Tribune (Minneapolis)(MCT)You know Paul DiMeo as thecaring carpenter and designer fromtelevisions Extreme Makeover:Home Edition. We caught up with

him by phone for a glimpse of theman behind the makeovers.

Q: Your official Web site says youwere the first to cry on ExtremeMakeover: Home Edition. Tell meabout that.

A: Does it really say that? My word.I need to change that! Yes, I criedduring the pilot. I cry pretty easily.Im a bit of a crybaby. Theyre tears ofjoy.

Q: So youre a sensitive carpenter.

A: Its important to be sensitive. Youcan pick up on things you wouldntotherwise. But I think it makes me abetter person, carpenter, designer.

You can be sensitive to someone elsesneeds and wants, as opposed to beinginsensitive. Which means you wouldmiss the subtle things that wouldmake someones life a little better.

Q: You were 5 when your family homeburned to the ground? Did that driveyour interest in carpentry?

A: The five children and my mom anddad and grandmom had to be splitup for a while as the new home wasbeing built. I stayed with some friendsof my parents. The builder went on

strike so we couldnt finish it; my dadhad to finish building the house. Hewas already doing two jobs. I wouldbe with him while he was runningtrim or baseboards or putting in themantel. I would do anything I coulddo to help him.

Q: Sounds as if you got the bug early.

A: All my mom and dad wanted wasto get their family back togetherunder one roof. I watched peoplecome and help my dad; the Knightsof Columbus would come over, the

ladies from Our Lady of Charitywould come over, plumbers from theneighborhood. I watched people comeand put it together to get us backunder one roof. Now Im doing thesame thing!

Q: You are a noted Dumpster diver.Share some of your secrets.

A: You have to be willing to look, todig through, to go down the darkestalley to find the brightest jewel. Youneed to learn the places to go to findthe good stuff. In New York Id come

out of all the theaters, and when theystrike a set you can pull some goodwood and make something out of it.

Q: Whats your best found treasure?

A: I found a good oak library chair in1979 that we still have today. Actually,we have found three others. They areslightly different, but for the mostpart theyre all white oak, done well.

Q: What are some of your othernotable items?

A: Heres the thing about beingnotable, what makes somethingnotable?

We can walk into someones houseand they have a beautiful poster of aVan Gogh, lets pick Starry Night.Weve all seen it, and here it is in thislovely couples house. Or you can walkinto someones house anywhere andmaybe theyve had their child do theirown version of that.

Manipulate that with the computerand then we can put it up on our wall.No one else in the world has that.Thats an original that your child did. That makes it notable.

Q: So you have a lot of original art?

A: We have over 200 framed piecesof artwork up on the wall, and all of

them come from friends and children. My dad does watercolors, so we havea few of his up.

Q: What do you consider to be thecenter of your home?

A: The dining room table. Its thegathering place. Its like the fire.We gather around it, we eat, we tellstories. Our memories are there. I canshut my eyes and tell you the scarsthat are in the dining room tablethat we had when I was growing up.I can put my hand down and feel the

groove in the piece of wood that wasright in front of me, where I sat fromthe time I was 2 until I was 18 and leftthe house.

Q: Whats your best personal homerenovation?

A: We were renting a loft out inWilliamsburg, Brooklyn, long beforeit was in vogue, would have been1987. We lived on the second floorand the first floor extended longerthan ours so we had a rooftop wecould walk out on and when you

did, the J Train passed right over us.In three days we built a deck for aparty we threw. Kelly made masks foreveryone and we built this wonderful400-square-foot-deck.

Q: What three things should no homebe without?

A: Dogs, friends and a piano. Therehas to be music and there has to belife itself.

    Shaking up Alzheimers patients

By Cynthia Billhartz GregorianSt. Louis Post-Dispatch(MCT)Medical experts believe that a lot ofthe symptoms of Alzheimers disease, including memory loss, result fromdamage to synapses that carry vitalmessages between brain cells.

Now a group of researchers at St.Louis University is taking a closerlook at a nutritional shake thatseems to improve verbal memory inAlzheimers patients.

The researchers are seeking peoplewho are in early stages of the diseaseto participate in the 24-week study.

total of 500 volunteers will beecruited at 40 study sites nationwide.

articipants must be at least 50ears old, have mild to moderatelzheimers and be on a stable dose of

drug approved by the FDA to treatlzheimers.

caregiver must accompanyarticipants to six visits and be

vailable by phone to answeruestions about the patients behaviornd ability to function.

alf of the participants will be givenhe nutritional shake to drink withreakfast. The other half will receivecontrol beverage. All participantsill continue taking traditionallzheimers medications prescribed by

    heir doctors.

he shake tastes like vanilla andtrawberries even though its madeith nutrients from fish.

You have to be able to mask the fishaste, said Dr. John Morley, directorf the division of geriatrics. Thats theroblem no one likes to drink fish.

orley and Theodore Malmstrom, ssistant professor of neurology andsychiatry, are leading the study at ST.ouis University.

he shake was concocted by Dr.ichard Wurtman, professor

    f neuropharmacology at the

Massachusetts Institute of Technologyin Boston, and contains uridine, choline and omega-3 fatty acids compounds that are found in fish, meat and breast milk.

Wurtman discovered that thecombination of nutrients promotes thegrowth of spines on the membranesof nerve cells in animals. When thosespines come into contact with othernerve cells, they form connections.

Alzheimers disease afflicts about4 million to 5 million Americansannually.

The current study builds on a similarone that SLU took part in two yearsago. It followed 225 patients withearly-stage Alzheimers who weredivided into two groups. Researcherstested them after 12 weeks by readingstories, waiting 30 minutes, thenquizzing them on details.

Forty percent of those who drank theshake showed marked improvement inverbal memory, while only 24 percentof those who drank the placeboshowed improvement.

Its an exciting possibility as anadjunct to whats already available,Morley said. It may allow patients tostay home longer and communicatewith friends a little longer.

The drink has almost no side effects,

because the ingredients come from all-

    natural sources.

Kids Take Gum Disease to Heart

(NewsUSA) - Teaching your kids tocare for their teeth will do more than

ensure a healthy smile -- it may alsohelp them avoid health problems laterin life.

Many parents consider cavities anormal part of childhood -- after all, children eat more sweet foods thanadults and often neglect brushing andflossing. But research links cavitiesand gum disease with serious healthproblems, including cardiovasculardisease.

While scientists havent proven thatgum disease causes heart problemsor vice versa, research does suggesta relationship between the twoconditions. The American Academyof Periodontology reports that peoplewith periodontal, or gum, disease arealmost twice as likely to have heartdisease. Likewise, in a study of 657heart-disease patients published inCirculation: Journal of the AmericanHeart Association, lead researcherMoise Desvarieux, M.D., Ph.D. ofColumbia University discoveredthat patients with harmful bacteriain their mouths were more likely tohave a clogged artery in their neck, aprecursor to stroke.

    Researchers believe that, when the

    harmful bacteria that cause gum

disease invade the gumline, they alsoaccess the bloodstream. Once theyenter the circulatory system, theseharmful bacteria can cause disease inother parts of the body.

But kids will be kids, and some maystop brushing their teeth before theyfinish singing The Star SpangledBanner or forget to floss after eatingthat ice cream cone. Even if kids areexcellent brushers and flossers, theycant get rid of the harmful bacterialiving in every part of their mouth.

Parents can skip the risk by givingtheir kids an oral probiotic, likeEvoraKids (www.myevorakids.com),a chewable that contains beneficialbacteria that are normally found inhealthy mouths. When these goodbacteria adhere to the teeth, theyleave less room for harmful bacteria togrow, helping to support tooth health.

Daily use of a product such asEvoraKids is an easy way to naturallymaintain oral health, says Dr. JeffreyHillman, D.M.D., Ph.D. and chiefmedical officer for Oragenics. Thegood bacteria inhibit the growth ofthe damaging bad bacteria, leading tobetter health and breath.
