HIKES IN JANUARY AND

FEBRUARY

The Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center at.J. Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon

s offering guided snowshoe hikes onSaturdays, beginning Jan. 15 throughFeb. 26, with a special moonlight hikeoffered Friday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m.

The hikes follow the tradition ofcommunity-wide snowshoe hikes thatwere popular in New England in the1920s. The parks snow-covered sanddunes are the perfect setting for all thesnowshoe hikes.

Most hiking routes include someclimbing but all take a slow, relaxedace, said DNRE Park Naturalistlizabeth Brockwell-Tillman. In myxperience, most people, including

children, enjoy the challenging terrain.Snowshoe hiking is an excellent wayto get exercise out-of-doors and enjoythe peace and solitude of winter in thepark.

P.J. Hoffmaster State Park is locatedat 6585 Lake Harbor Rd. in Muskegon.Hikes will begin at 10:30 a.m. at theparks Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center.Pre-registration begins Monday, Nov.

15, and is required for all participants,including those with their ownsnowshoes. Snowshoes can also bereserved for a small fee. Reservationsfor the Saturday hikes and the specialmoonlit hike can be made by contactingthe Gillette Nature Center at 231-798-3573.

Six or more inches of snow is neededfor snowshoeing. If snow is lacking,the naturalist will lead participants on awinter exploration of the park.

PROTECTING YOUR

SPRINKLER SYSTEM ON

If they are not properly protected,inground irrigation systems can bdamaged by harsh winter weather.Protecting them is easy enough. Herare a few tips to help:

Turn off your timer. Automatic systemshave a controller or timer. Moscontrollers have a rain or off modthat shuts off the signals to the valves.The controller continues to keep time,the programming information (startimes, valve run times, etc.) isnt losand the clock continues to run. Thonly change is that the valves will no

activate.

You can also shut off the power to thcontroller, but if you do, youll need treprogram the time and potentially allthe other settings when the weathewarms up.

Shut off the water. You can protect thmain shutoff valve against freezing byshutting off the water supply. Make surthe valve is wrapped with insulation(foam insulation tape and a plasticbag). If your system doesnt havemain shutoff valve, install one to protecyour investment.

Aboveground piping also needs to binsulated and you can use self-sticking,foam-insulating tape or foam-insulatingtubes found at home supply stores.

Keep the pipes from freezing. If you livin a very cold area, consider removingthe water from the pipes and sprinklersso the pipes dont freeze and burst.There are several ways to drain pipes:manual drain valves, automatic drainvalves or the compressed air blowoumethod. But proceed cautiously. Sincthere could be potential safety risks,contacting an irrigation specialist is

good idea.

Insulate backflow preventers andvalves if they are aboveground. Youcan also use insulation tape for this, bube careful not to block the air vents anddrain outlets on backflow preventers.
