TOP TOOLS FOR THE DIYER ON

    OUR GIFT LIST

(NewsUSA) - The holidays are around

the corner, and nows the time to decide

hat to buy the do-it-yourselfer on

our list. According to a recent surveyommissioned by Kelton Research and

    raftsman, more than three-quarters (77

ercent) of men plan on tackling some sort

    f DIY project next year.

    Additionally, 69 percent of female

espondents admit to having a laundry

list of projects theyd like their spouse

or significant other to take on around the

house in the new year. Therefore, its safe

to say that buying a new tool will hit the nail

    on the head.

With that in mind, and armed with the

studys results showing that 56 percent of

men actually prefer to receive functional

gifts like tools, and 67 percent of women

prefer to give them, heres a list ofCraftsman tools that are Guys Favorites

    Guaranteed this holiday season:

    * Clench Wrench Two-Piece Set. A

convenient tool that can be used on more

than 50 fastener sizes and types. The

    ratcheting feature and multi-positional

    head make for quick work.

    * Universal Max Axess 19-piece Set.

    pass-thru ratchet and socket system

hat virtually eliminates the need for deep

sockets, and can work with six different

    ypes of nuts and bolts.

    * V4 Combo -- Screwdriver and Cutter.

Perfect for light DIY projects around the

home. The screwdriver has two speeds

and features a cutter for various materials.* NEXTEC G2 Drill/Driver. Boasts the

best torque in its class, and an all new, two-

speed gear box and 18-position clutch.

    * NEXTEC G2 Multi-Tool. Not only can

this tool sand, cut, grind, grate and remove

grout, but it now offers a new tool-less

    accessory exchange, allowing a quick-

release system to change the attachments

versus using a tool such as a hex key, and

a variable-speed dial that matches speed

to the specific task at hand.

For more information on top holiday

gifts and easy how-to projects around the

home, visit the Craftsman Experience on

    www.facebook.com/craftsman. It is the

ultimate DIY playground where clinics anddemos are hosted by organizations that

share their expert skills and talents in lawn

and garden care as well as auto repair,

woodworking and garage storage -- all

    streamed live over the Internet.

HED: MSAS MAKES 308 SUBS, 70

    DOZEN COOKIES FOR ANNUAL

    FUNDRAISER

    By Lauren Fitch

    Pioneer Staff Writer

MORLEY While hunters headed to the

woods on Tuesday and students enjoyed

the day off school, Phyllis Carlson spent

the day baking 35 dozen cookies.

The Morley Stanwood AlternativeSchool secretary had done the same thing

on Sunday, preparing for the end of the

schools annual fundraiser. For the past seven years, MSAS

students have sold cookies and subs toraise money for field trips and end-of-the-trimester rewards. Fifteen students madesales this year, raising $1,300.

A team of seven students, supervisedby Carlson, spent Thursday morningassembling 308 subs for people to pick upthat afternoon.

I like being able to provide the activitiesfor them, Carlson said. Theres no extramoney for anything, so we do this.

Brett Christensen, Kris Culver, AshleyTrowbridge, Ashley Moore, Sern Petersen,Mike Manning and Travis Shoop worked

out a system to assemble and packagethe subs.

Students who pass at least two creditsevery trimester earn themselves a spot onthe incentive trip, which has included a trip

to the Rock Cafe, the ice rink, bowling andminiature golf in the past.

Kris Culver, who has attended MSAS forfour years, said his favorite field trip wasto Michigan Adventure. The group alsohas traveled to the Upper Peninsula andChicago for previous overnight trips.

Making sales and assembling the subsis more fun than work, said Culver, whobrought in $160 for the fundraiser.

    SOLUTIONS FOR SENIORS

    STRUGGLING IN TODAYS ECONOMY

(NewsUSA) - Turmoil in the economy.Skyrocketing jobless numbers. Budgetcuts putting families at risk. And seniorservices being cut. And cut. And cut.

Whether it is nutrition, housing, or medicalneeds, seniors and their caregivers are nowlooking for new ways to keep themselvesclothed, fed and housed. In fact, PresidentObamas full-year Continuing Resolutionfor 2011 included a 45 percent nationalcutback of Senior Community Service

Employment Program funding from thefiscal year 2010 budget.

With federal funding at the top of thechopping block, many of our elderly donthave access to even one hot meal a day.Meals on Wheels, a non-profit agency, had to establish a waiting list at many of itssites across the U.S. this year.

While the world of senior nutritionprograms faces trying fiscal times, thereare services out there to help. Moms Meals(www.MomsMeals.com), created by afamily to care for their aging grandmothers, delivers fresh-prepared, nutritionallybalanced meals right to the doors of thosewho need them most. At only $5.99 per

meal, far less than the cost of a restaurantmeal, Moms Meals are designed by adietician and chef and contain the proper

nourishment for seniors. While transportation options are also

being cut, a little digging will show thatcertain agencies are working for the benefitof seniors. At the 2005 White House

Conference on Aging, transportation wasidentified as the third most important priorityof seniors, right under reauthorizationof the Older Americans Act (No. 1) andmatters pertaining to long-term care, according to the National Center on SeniorTransportation. The NCST has made ittheir mission to increase transportationoptions for older adults and enhance theirability to live more independently withintheir communities throughout the U.S.More about the NCST can be found atwww.seniortransportation.net.

With these federal cuts also comesadded financial burden on seniors and theirfamilies. To help, AARP offers their Money

Management Program, a daily service tohelp low-income older or disabled peoplewho have difficulty budgeting, payingroutine bills and keeping track of financialmatters. More information about it can befound at www.aarpmmp.org.

    BUSINESSES FIND OPPORTUNITY IN

    IDAHO

(NewsUSA) - Imagine a place where abalanced budget is required by law, a placewhere terms like fiscal responsibility stillmean something. Doesnt that sound likea business utopia? Its just Idaho.

If youre suddenly thinking of mountainsand potatoes, you only have part of the

story. Start thinking low property cost, stable tax environment and affordable cost

of living. Thats the real Idaho, a smart

business choice -- an ideal location to

expand, start or move your business.

The people are what tipped the scales

for us. The people living here in the [Idaho]

community will provide us a great pool for

our workforce, said Mark Pitchford, vice

president of direct sales and service of

Allstate. Weve got great support from the

local community, the chambers and the

mayors. Its incredible to be able to bring

together that kind of effort. Were thrilled.

Allstate recently chose Idaho to open a

    75,000-square-foot customer care center

employing 600 people. Other than thepromising workforce, Pitchford was excited

by the business benefits of his partnerships

with the local and state governments.

    Idahos commitment to fiscal responsibility

maintains a balanced budget, leaving no

wiggle room for unexpected tax spikes.

Idaho has the second-lowest energy costs

in the nation, and its conveniently located

for product distribution in the western

    United States. The northwestern state

was also ranked number three in highest

projected job growth by the Bureau of

    Labor Statistics.

    The financial community salutes Idaho

for its business-savvy methods as well.

Forbes ranked Idaho first in patents percapita, fifth in best economic outlook and

    ninth for entrepreneurship and innovation.

    But business opportunities dont stop

there. Low property costs plus low energy

    costs using hydro-electric power make

    expansion or relocation an attractive

option. Not to mention, cost of living is

low, and quality of life is high. Idaho has a

shockingly low crime rate, short commutes

and access to an abundance of nature and

    wildlife.

    As Allstate affirms, happy employees

translate to happy customers, which will

only enhance a companys bottom line.

business climate of Idaho, visit www.commerce.idaho.gov.

AVOCADO OIL IS PICKING UP STEAM

    IN THE KITCHEN

(NewsUSA) - Watch out olive oil, chefsof all varieties have a new oil option undertheir apron thats as pleasing to peopleshealth as it is to their taste buds -- avocadooil.

My favorite at the moment is thawonderful New Zealand invention, avocadooil. It has a delectable bright green colorand a delicious avocado flavor and isincredibly good for your health, says RayMcVinne, a celebrity chef and author.

Avocado oil packs a Supermalike punch with nearly 20 vitamins andminerals. Plus, it can be infused with other

savory flavors like Lemon and Rosemaryto add real variety to your meals.

Avocado oil is a rich source oantioxidants, folate, fiber and vitamins Eand C. Avocados are virtually the only fruiwith monounsaturated fats, which are thegood fats recommended by the AmericanHeart Association. Recent studies from theNutrition Institute uncovered even morehealth benefits in avocado oil.

An extra-virgin avocado oil from a NeZealand company called Olivado wasfound to be the best source of a muchsought-after vitamin-like substance,CoQ10. Olivado avocado oil containsmore CoQ10, also called ubiquinone,

    GRANDPARENTS, GRANDKIDS

    BENEFIT FROM BETTER HEARING

    (NewsUSA) - Grandparents and

grandchildren have much to learn from one

    another, and such valuable relationships

    should be cultivated. Oxford University

    research has shown that involved

    grandparents contribute significantly to

    better-adjusted grandchildren.

    The research suggests that children

    find unique acceptance in their

    relationships with grandparents, which

    benefits them emotionally and mentally.

The grandparental bond is built on

    communication. In fact, most children

studied did not identify distance as an

    important factor if communication was

    strong.

    Unfortunately, hearing loss is the

    number-one challenge to communication.

According to the National Institute on

    Deafness and Other Communication

    Disorders (NIDCD), age and hearing

loss are strongly related -- 30 percent of

seniors from 65 to 74 years old suffer from

a hearing disability. For adults 75 years

of age or older, hearing loss jumps to 47

    percent.

It doesnt take a PhD for my patients

to understand the many costs of hearing

loss, says Sreek Cherukuri, MD, a certified

ear, nose and throat physician based in

    Chicago, Ill.

    Beyond emotional well-being, even

something simple like taking the grandkids

to the pool can turn dangerous if grandma

cant hear possible cries for help. Driving

puts the children at risk if the grandparentscannot hear oncoming traffic or car horns.

The NIDCD reports that only one out of

every five people who needs a hearing aid

actually wears one. This is largely due to

the extravagant cost of most hearing aids.

I found that I saw too many patients with

hearing loss going home without a solution

because they couldnt afford hearing aid

    prices, says Dr. Cherukuri.

    Cherukuris response was to develop

    inexpensive but effective hearing aids.

With todays technology, a quality hearing

aid shouldnt cost more than a digital

    camera or iPod, Cherukuri says.

    MDHearingAid, found at www.

    mdhearingaid.com, isnt just a reliable

source for affordable hearing aids, its

also a good source for expert consumer

    information.

You should see a physician and get the

best hearing aid you can afford. We offer

an excellent choice for those who cannot

afford a custom hearing aid. Seniors

should enjoy the benefits of their ripe age.

This includes plenty of quality time with

    grandchildren.

    WILL DAIRY BOOST YOUR WEIGHT-

    LOSS RESOLUTION?

(NewsUSA) - If weight loss and dieting

are on your New Years resolution agenda,

an unlikely food group may be the help

    you need.

Consuming dairy products as part of

your daily diet can help keep weight down,

according to several studies. Findings in

the Journal of Nutrition demonstrated that

    higher-protein, high-dairy diets shaved off

belly fat and increased lean muscle. One hundred percent of the weight

lost in the higher-protein, high-dairy group

was fat. And the participants gained

muscle mass, which is a major change in

    body composition, says Andrea Josse,

lead author of the study and a graduate

student in the Department of Kinesiology

    at McMaster University.

In addition, a Harvard study, which

suggests that the food quality is more

important than its calorie count, found

that eating specific high-quality foods was

linked with less weight gain over time. Its

data showed that the more daily servings

people ate of fruits, vegetables, nuts,

whole grains and yogurt, the less weight

they gained. In fact, the research found

that each extra daily serving of yogurt

prevented 0.82 of a pound of weight gain.

    The Nutrition and Metabolism journal

reported a study in which participants who

consumed three or more servings of dair

a day after weight loss were able to eat

more calories without gaining weight than

    those who didnt consume dairy.

Milk is nutritionally unique in that it is a

great source of nine essential nutrients:

    calcium, potassium, phosphorus, protein,

    vitamins A, D and B12, riboflavin and

niacin. It provides three of the five nutrient

of concern that children do not get enough

    of: calcium, magnesium and potassium.

By combining a high intake of nutrient

rich dairy with regular physical activity, it

wont even feel like youre trying to lose

    weight.

However, as with any diet, you must be

realistic. Results take time, so first commit

to getting through January to establish a

real routine, says Alyssa Greenstein, a

registered dietitian with the Dairy Council

of Florida. According to a National Health and

Nutrition survey, 86 percent of women

and 76 percent of men fail to meet the

    recommended dairy intake of three

servings each day. That means the majorit

of Americans dont have satisfactory level

of essential nutrients like potassium, zinc,

calcium and folate. These levels plummet

when dieters attempt to trim calories b

    purging dairy.
